07:03:21 PM | agamotto | Garbee- You might be amused to know that my parents are hunkered down with my brother in Phoenix... dodging dust storms!
07:03:30 PM | BitSprocket | Yay!
07:03:32 PM | OompaLoompa | I feel mean only complimenting Christa, nice eyebrows RobbieF :D

07:04:52 PM | _Jot_ | TheChrista, did you send a postcard from Mexico?
07:04:56 PM | agamotto | Michaeliowa- snowing yet?
07:04:59 PM | Garbee | The memory usage of the new site is sick!

07:05:48 PM | Dennis_Kelley | that was great!
07:05:49 PM | G_Dog1985_ | lol
07:05:57 PM | RavenLords | yes
07:06:03 PM | G_Dog1985_ | win
07:06:24 PM | Garbee | So accurate too.
07:06:30 PM | agamotto | I am surprised it isn't just liquidimage.ca
07:06:35 PM | G_Dog1985_ | yep
07:06:44 PM | Michaeliowa | agamotto: you getting snow?
07:06:56 PM | agamotto | not yet
07:07:05 PM | BitSprocket | Is it my imagination or does RobbieF seem to always be sipping on vodka?
07:07:17 PM | agamotto | What is wrong with vodka?
07:07:23 PM | Garbee | Netgear is typically what I recommend.
07:07:38 PM | RavenLords | ok ty
07:07:42 PM | G_Dog1985_ | same
07:07:46 PM | BitSprocket | I use Linksys with ddwrt
07:07:48 PM | agamotto | I recommend anything not endorsed by AT&T
07:07:53 PM | Mark_M | Asus have some great new routers, best thruput etc
07:07:56 PM | G_Dog1985_ | but miro
07:08:14 PM | Garbee | DO NOT enable WPS on the router. Or disable it if it is enabled by default in your ROM.
07:08:29 PM | GoodGuy | Take a look at Asus RT-N66U "Dark Knight"
07:08:42 PM | BitSprocket | Mine has 2!
07:08:47 PM | Garbee | And still have room on the ROM.
07:09:00 PM | Mark_M | http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/view
07:09:03 PM | agamotto | Has anyone here played with routers featuring AirOS?
07:09:07 PM | Mark_M | thats a great link about routers
07:09:27 PM | BitSprocket | How does openwrt stack up to ddwrt?
07:09:56 PM | agamotto | TheChrista- You might also want to have Robbie explain what the differences are between a router and a gateway.
07:10:19 PM | GoodGuy | What does that do to their warranty?
07:10:25 PM | RavenLords | nice
07:10:44 PM | RavenLords | ok ty
07:10:46 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Hello Goodguy!
07:10:46 PM | agamotto | woot!
07:10:51 PM | GoodGuy | Hi Dennis_Kelley
07:11:35 PM | RavenLords | sweet
07:11:39 PM | agamotto | So what you have there would be more of a gateway than a router?
07:11:51 PM | Garbee | RobbieF, What is the buffer size in that router?
07:11:56 PM | invinciblemutant | lol
07:12:04 PM | invinciblemutant | durex ads on bsp
07:12:09 PM | Garbee | Yea, get to the real point and companies get all hush-hush.
07:12:15 PM | agamotto | That would make it a very good bargain at ~ $100
07:12:16 PM | invinciblemutant | lol
07:12:17 PM | Mark_M | check out the chart here guys, asus on top by looks ... http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/view
07:12:20 PM | Michaeliowa | lol
07:12:45 PM | Garbee | The Asus router on that list is not supported by DD-WRT, so you may want to look at another solution.
07:13:06 PM | evermind | well, dban is something nice too
07:13:08 PM | Garbee | If you want to be stuck with the proprietary firmware, you can take the top model.
07:13:08 PM | G_Dog1985_ | haha
07:13:12 PM | Garbee | TheChrista, It is serious.
07:13:15 PM | Dennis_Kelley | TheChrista - He is serious!
07:13:18 PM | agamotto | The only distro that actually employs a Vorlon....
07:13:20 PM | Garbee | Wikipedia says it, it is true.
07:13:27 PM | agamotto | TheChrista- strewth
07:13:43 PM | evermind | yes, x11 forwarding, ssh
07:13:45 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, it wa'n't the girlfriend, it's the wife
07:13:47 PM | loki2 | a gateway is a software term for interconnecting protocol. a router is hardware
07:13:50 PM | Mark_M | its what we need in Australia with new fibre to the home network, router needs to support 100mb
07:13:51 PM | chrisreich | TheChrista RobbieF is correct, but he is *not* serious. Well, hardly ever.
07:13:56 PM | BitSprocket | RobbieF - Yes, you can use RDP
07:13:57 PM | loki2 | protocols
07:14:03 PM | GoodGuy | wife was a girlfriend first :-)
07:14:07 PM | Garbee | VNC has been speedy for me when it works... It is mainly about the network.
07:14:09 PM | agamotto | loki2- So why are some boxes called gateways, and others routers?
07:14:11 PM | Garbee | Do I hear small children?
07:14:18 PM | chrisreich | and now is his ex-wife.
07:14:34 PM | G_Dog1985_ | Garbee: yes
07:14:44 PM | G_Dog1985_ | i hear i to
07:14:45 PM | loki2 | really, have not come across them
07:15:05 PM | Garbee | loki2, Listen real close sometime. Then you can hear the spirits of Cat5.
07:15:12 PM | BitSprocket | Those are the viewers that they captured and are now hiding them under the stairs
07:15:15 PM | agamotto | loki2- So, by your language, all routers include a modem?
07:15:26 PM | loki2 | er no
07:15:35 PM | GoodGuy | a router is a gateway.. One side is the internet and the other your local LAN'
07:15:39 PM | Mark_M | gateway = modem for me, router = sharing connection
07:15:49 PM | Garbee | loki2, A router is a bit more than just hardware.
07:15:57 PM | GoodGuy | a cable modem is the modem
07:16:06 PM | OompaLoompa | Yes Bit anyone who ever said RobbieF was boring was tracked down and put in the cellar. Forced to listen to all his shows.
07:16:12 PM | _Jot_ | modem = device that modulates electronic signals into sounds and demodulates them back
07:16:14 PM | GoodGuy | wireless part of a router = Access Point
07:16:14 PM | Garbee | It is also the software stack on top of that hardware for the processing and transport of packets.
07:16:28 PM | agamotto | loki2- Ok, then what is a 'box' (1) singular that connects to xDSl/cable, has wireless, and has the usual 4 ethernet ports on the back?
07:16:41 PM | Garbee | Routers really become a complicated device, since there are so many different forms.
07:17:04 PM | GoodGuy | They call them gateways iifc
07:17:05 PM | loki2 | a router, a gateway and a modem
07:17:06 PM | Garbee | Enterprise level routers even have exchangable parts, so one model can really do an array of tasks.
07:17:11 PM | Mark_M | agamotto, u giving prizes? hey idea, we should have a techie quiz show one day!!
07:17:15 PM | loki2 | and probably a firewall!
07:17:18 PM | BitSprocket | RDP can let you use sound whereas I don't believe vnc will RobbieF
07:17:22 PM | agamotto | No wonder the people at AT&T have no idea about what they are selling...
07:17:45 PM | Garbee | I tend to see RDP using more network resources though.
07:17:47 PM | GoodGuy | But the router's IP address is called the gateway in settings
07:17:49 PM | Garbee | So that sound comes at a cost.
07:17:57 PM | BitSprocket | Agreed Garbee
07:17:58 PM | agamotto | Mark_M- No, actual serious inquiry so I can walk into store/net shop and buy (1) box that does it all.
07:18:19 PM | Dave_Maydew | RobbieF hope thats Whisky in that glass :-)
07:18:40 PM | Garbee | agamotto, That is a modem and integrated-home router combo.
07:18:44 PM | Dave_Maydew | Hey Scorpio
07:18:48 PM | Mark_M | cisco got good shit if willing to spend $800 -$1200
07:18:51 PM | evermind | file_get_contents
07:18:54 PM | evermind | reads in your template
07:18:56 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, Language.
07:18:57 PM | evermind | outputs ...
07:19:06 PM | Mark_M | oops, my bad, i appologize
07:19:09 PM | evermind | theres other functs too
07:19:10 PM | agamotto | Q being: What is the average customer supposed to call said 'box' when purchasing?
07:19:14 PM | Mark_M | very sorry guys :(
07:19:25 PM | Scorpio55 | Dave_Maydew hi Dave
07:19:36 PM | Mark_M | @agamotto for me in AUS its called a router
07:19:43 PM | Dave_Maydew | I've tried DecentOS
07:19:46 PM | Mark_M | because we dont need adsl modems anymore
07:19:56 PM | _Jot_ | agamotto, 'this box where I connect them intarnet-tubes and my 'compeeters'
07:20:00 PM | agamotto | Mark_M- Ok, that points me to a direction at least.
07:20:08 PM | agamotto | _Jot_- exactly
07:20:10 PM | GoodGuy | Windows 7 Dave_Maydew :-)
07:20:12 PM | Mark_M | we got firbre optics comming
07:20:19 PM | GoodGuy | Windows 7? Dave_Maydew :-)
07:20:20 PM | Mark_M | fibre to the home
07:20:23 PM | Dave_Maydew | but I'm going to try the Nvidia Dev drivers
07:20:32 PM | Dave_Maydew | Windows 7??
07:20:37 PM | Dave_Maydew | Noooooooooooo
07:20:41 PM | emiel1976 | RobbieF thanks that helps
07:20:43 PM | agamotto | Mark_M- Shhhh, or we will drop anchors on your cables too ;>
07:20:48 PM | Garbee | Optimus Prime!
07:20:50 PM | Mark_M | so there fore, ur phone line will pug straight in to router with fibre optics, with thru put of 100mb/40mb
07:20:56 PM | GoodGuy | You said a DecentOS ( I know its a Linux)
07:20:57 PM | Dave_Maydew | Optimus Prime
07:21:00 PM | Mark_M | and not need modem
07:21:21 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, You will most likely have Fiber to the home, then convert that to cable, which then needs a modem.
07:21:23 PM | smittysmit | Optimus Prime
07:21:38 PM | Garbee | An actual Fibre router for a home is EXPENSIVE since it is an enterprise level solution.
07:21:39 PM | _Jot_ | fibre-optics has the same upload and download-speed, such speeds as you mention often secretly go through dsl-technology or similar cable-technologies at the end
07:21:48 PM | evermind | nvidia is not better when it comes to bitcoins
07:21:49 PM | agamotto | Garbee- Not in AU, the government has commited for full-fibre across the country.
07:21:50 PM | Dave_Maydew | has nVidia been better??
07:21:51 PM | evermind | just saying...
07:21:56 PM | Mark_M | nah, modem will be in our power box, everyone gets the same one etc, it does the whole house, alarms, net etc
07:22:02 PM | Garbee | agamotto, That is interesting.
07:22:17 PM | Dave_Maydew | lol
07:22:18 PM | BitSprocket | My experience is that NVidia has been much easier to install the drivers for and configure
07:22:33 PM | Scorpio55 | Dave_Maydew tried cinnamon it's awful, like going back to win 95...lol
07:22:40 PM | agamotto | Garbee- Yes, amazing what can happen when a country settles on one standard.
07:22:42 PM | BitSprocket | 3.1 ftw!
07:22:47 PM | chrisreich | I remember editing text files on clay tablets, RobbieF :-)
07:22:51 PM | Dave_Maydew | Still have issues with nVidia and *Cough* Unity
07:22:59 PM | evermind | but then again, when it comes just to presenting the gui, i dont think that theres any "bad" card nowadays
07:23:11 PM | BitSprocket | What kind of trouble Dave_Maydew?
07:23:14 PM | evermind | all i know work out of the box without any extra install
07:23:17 PM | agamotto | I like XFCE myself
07:23:42 PM | Garbee | Dave_Maydew, That is mostly Unity in my experience.
07:23:42 PM | agamotto | Then nVidia will lose a whole category of customers
07:23:43 PM | jonathon | Still get the "unsupported hardware" watermark after every graphics update with the onboard ATI chip in my motherboard.
07:23:53 PM | Dave_Maydew | Doh!!!
07:24:02 PM | G_Dog1985_ | haha
07:24:36 PM | agamotto | Sounds like a good reason to keep 'old' kit for a bit longer until someone wants our money.
07:24:48 PM | Dave_Maydew | I've had nVidia say my issues are Canonicals fault and Canonical have passed the buck
07:25:07 PM | agamotto | Dave_Maydew- No surprise there
07:25:17 PM | BitSprocket | I have a gtx480 running Unity no problems....
07:25:20 PM | Dave_Maydew | Nope thats true
07:25:39 PM | Dave_Maydew | GeForceFX 5700 with issues
07:25:46 PM | Garbee | I run a GTS-450 and when I run Unity no issues either.
07:25:50 PM | agamotto | Dave_Maydew- One of the main reasons I haven't upgraded from my 7xxx series cards. Can't get straight answers out of anyone.
07:25:50 PM | Garbee | ^^ Unless the alpha.
07:26:09 PM | Garbee | Dave_Maydew, There is your issue, that card is generations old.
07:26:11 PM | evermind | geforce actually really good for compiz stuff starting with 6x series
07:26:16 PM | Garbee | It really should be upgraded.
07:26:17 PM | evermind | everything below that could be a prob
07:26:26 PM | Dave_Maydew | It works great in 10.04 but not 11.04+
07:26:34 PM | Garbee | I do believe the FX line even requires a special driver to themselves.
07:26:45 PM | Scorpio55 | Dave_Maydew Nvidia don't support that card
07:26:57 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, I have a question, what's in the news?
07:26:58 PM | Dave_Maydew | I'm using the 173 driver
07:27:07 PM | Garbee | walmart?
07:27:07 PM | BitSprocket | Here's a question: What's in the news? haha!
07:27:12 PM | Mark_M | I have question? Hows Christa html course going?
07:27:16 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Thrift Store!
07:27:19 PM | chrisreich | Goodwill
07:27:20 PM | Yazid1965 | Does Christa still like cookies? LOL
07:27:24 PM | evermind | RobbieF how have you learned all that gimp stuff?
07:27:25 PM | Scorpio55 | some of the TI series cards are no longer supported
07:27:27 PM | evermind | i mean, when and where
07:27:34 PM | OompaLoompa | He knit it himeslf
07:27:35 PM | Dave_Maydew | She's learning to use Linux
07:27:37 PM | Dave_Maydew | lol
07:27:37 PM | Garbee | You have Robbie to cheat off of!
07:27:56 PM | evermind | css3 is fun
07:27:56 PM | agamotto | I wish I had the metabolism that would allow me to wear sweaters/vests without breaking out in persperation.
07:27:57 PM | evermind | =)
07:28:03 PM | evermind | so much simpler
07:28:09 PM | Mark_M | CSS 3 = not need photoshop !! :)
07:28:11 PM | BitSprocket | TheChrista, can you give us a 30 second rundown of why html5 is better and needed?
07:28:30 PM | Mark_M | good to hear enjoying Christa
07:28:41 PM | Garbee | BitSprocket, I don't think she is that into it yet.
07:28:58 PM | agamotto | TheChrista will have her own Photoshop vodcast....
07:29:04 PM | BitSprocket | Ah
07:29:05 PM | LuiGeek | Hello!! --->from FL
07:29:05 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, What does Photoshop have to do with CSS3?
07:29:18 PM | OompaLoompa | FL? Jealous Luigeek
07:29:21 PM | BitSprocket | RobbieF, when are you going to start your GIMP vodcast?
07:29:21 PM | chrisreich | DRINK!
07:29:52 PM | Dave_Maydew | Oh no the Kaleidoscope
07:29:56 PM | LuiGeek | why is that oompa?
07:30:05 PM | OompaLoompa | Its warm there is it not?
07:30:06 PM | BitSprocket | Nootrinose?
07:30:06 PM | LuiGeek | where u at?
07:30:09 PM | agamotto | How do we know that the neutrinos didn't knock the connection loose?
07:30:13 PM | Mark_M | css3 is all about graphic styling thats normally done in PS. eg drop shadows, rotating objects/text, opacity, etc
07:30:16 PM | Dave_Maydew | The problems they're having is Windows based
07:30:54 PM | agamotto | RobbieF- Actually, according to Mach, some of Einstein's math IS wrong...
07:30:54 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, CSS3 is needed in order to make those design's easier (if not even possible) to display in a browser in a standard way.
07:30:55 PM | BitSprocket | How many software engineers does it take to track nutrinos? None, that's a hardware problem. Oye
07:30:57 PM | G_Dog1985_ | lol Dave_Maydew
07:30:59 PM | evermind | well, if it proves one thing, than that it needs more testing
07:31:03 PM | RavenLords | lol
07:31:03 PM | GoodGuy | They thought Einstein was wrong, but they were mistaken
07:31:05 PM | evermind | cause the theories still stand
07:31:14 PM | Dave_Maydew | ?10,000 each resident
07:31:25 PM | Garbee | agamotto, E=MC^2 still holds true... I'm good.
07:31:50 PM | agamotto | evermind- check into this month's issue of Discover... some of that may be changing.
07:31:50 PM | Mark_M | @garbee spoton, easier means no need to muck thgem up in photoshop, can style with css3 now easy
07:31:52 PM | GoodGuy | wonder how he figured that out Garbee
07:31:53 PM | Dave_Maydew | God I'm good
07:32:01 PM | agamotto | Garbee- That part is still correct, yes
07:32:24 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, Not true. Wireframes, designs, and other pre-coding material is still good, since it speeds up the coding process.
07:32:24 PM | Mark_M | @garbee and no way css3 displays same on all browsers, lolz
07:32:27 PM | Dave_Maydew | why did OFCOM'edy sell the UHF frequencies off then find that issue
07:32:34 PM | Dave_Maydew | NUMPTIES
07:32:50 PM | GoodGuy | Everyone knows the speed of light insnt the fastest.. Dont they watch Star Trak and Star Wars?
07:32:51 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, If you do it properly, it renders properly. At least, all my code does as long as the browsers support it.
07:33:11 PM | Garbee | GoodGuy, A lot more work than I am willing to do, that is how.
07:33:14 PM | agamotto | Dave_Maydew- I thought it was to expand wireless for police, military, etc...
07:33:15 PM | Mark_M | @garbee agree, u should see the css3 mpx for fireworks, helps heaps with wireframing, as can then code your "dropshadows" in css3
07:33:16 PM | _Jot_ | Big brother is watching you
07:33:20 PM | GoodGuy | cant get to all those star systems at the slow speed of light
07:33:58 PM | agamotto | Where is Wesley when we need him?
07:34:00 PM | Dave_Maydew | Nooo Agamoto our Police use T25 on 400MHz and 800MHz
07:34:09 PM | BitSprocket | FiberCruch for the win!
07:34:11 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, Fireworks = Adobe = Expensive. Not happening.
07:34:15 PM | evermind | RobbieF, can you see the impact on your google map?
07:34:20 PM | evermind | i mean of africa being half off
07:34:42 PM | agamotto | I wonder if that has caused problems for kevoh?
07:34:44 PM | BitSprocket | 2 weeks without netflix? The humanity!
07:34:56 PM | Garbee | Adobe stuff (for actual code) can mess the code up as well in some cases, so it is not recommended to even use.
07:35:23 PM | Mark_M | @garbee is industry standard bro, i use it everyday at work
07:35:28 PM | _Jot_ | Yay! We're wonderful
07:35:40 PM | GoodGuy | I like when I read they were not certain when they turned on that CERN gadget on, it wouldnt suck earth into a black hole or something
07:35:44 PM | Garbee | Dreamweaver is not a standard. A text editor is standard, it does not matter which.
07:35:57 PM | GoodGuy | Cant afford to be wrong lol
07:36:01 PM | agamotto | Didn't 3.5 of LibreOffice just come out?
07:36:05 PM | Mark_M | im talkin fireworks/photoshop lol, didnt mention DW
07:36:06 PM | Dave_Maydew | I use KompoZer
07:36:11 PM | Garbee | agamotto, Yes, I do believe so.
07:36:15 PM | pyrosrock | o danm i completely forgot about the show good thing i logged on to the chatroom
07:36:18 PM | Mark_M | fireworks great for wireframing
07:36:22 PM | BitSprocket | agamotto it did very recently and it's not much diff than 3.4.x
07:36:28 PM | Mark_M | i dont use PS for web tho
07:36:35 PM | agamotto | BitSprocket- Ok, so no need to rush it, eh?
07:36:39 PM | evermind | kids get a room
07:36:43 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, Photoshop, maybe. Fireworks still, not quite in my books.
07:36:49 PM | GoodGuy | RobbieF, - where does Christa park her Bentley during the show?
07:36:57 PM | Dave_Maydew | is there another suitable FrontPage like app
07:36:58 PM | BitSprocket | It's got some bug fixes but not really worth tripping over. I found it has some issues with templates I use too.
07:37:10 PM | agamotto | In what, rupees?
07:37:14 PM | evermind | get over it, kids
07:37:30 PM | BitSprocket | Bitcoin?
07:37:31 PM | GoodGuy | Castles dont have mortgages Christa
07:37:34 PM | Mark_M | @garbee i give my reason for fireworks, is for wireframing / mockups, and so fast cause use "symbols" and just click drag, like snippets in code etc
07:37:44 PM | agamotto | TheChrista- I was actually defending you :)
07:37:47 PM | Scorpio55 | Dave_Maydew LO Writer
07:37:53 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, Powerpoint is also a great tool for wireframing, as well as Publisher.
07:38:12 PM | Mark_M | but those cant them code the image styles in css3 thats my whole point :)
07:38:21 PM | Dave_Maydew | Can I drag and drop in that one Scorpio??
07:38:28 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, They don't need to, that is the developers job, not the designer.
07:38:32 PM | evermind | feeling better now?;:=
07:38:36 PM | BitSprocket | Scorpio55 as a replacement for frontpage?
07:38:42 PM | Mark_M | bah, lern 2 do both
07:38:42 PM | Yazid1965 | LOL
07:38:49 PM | GoodGuy | If you can afford Macs, what is the price of Photoshop to you?
07:38:52 PM | agamotto | The only thing holding GIMP back is the loads of hand-holding
07:38:57 PM | Yazid1965 | Get him Christa LOL
07:38:59 PM | Mark_M | css3 should be dseigner, js php etc dev
07:39:09 PM | agamotto | Dieter?
07:39:10 PM | pyrosrock | wow RobbieF the BSP and the main tool are at compleetly difrent points
07:39:10 PM | jonathon | Dave_Maydew, Kompozer
07:39:16 PM | BitSprocket | Wahooza!
07:39:19 PM | pyrosrock | main feed
07:39:22 PM | Scorpio55 | You can do desktop publishing in LO
07:39:27 PM | King_Arthur | Christa is Jazzy -- raise your hands
07:39:28 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, We apparently have different views on the jobs.
07:39:36 PM | TheChrista | They are more expensive, but I find that I use them for a really long time and they end up paying for themselves
07:39:44 PM | BitSprocket | RobbieF - I could have supplied you with embarasing photos!
07:39:45 PM | GoodGuy | ask her Mom
07:40:16 PM | GoodGuy | Moms always have some embarassing photos.. usually saved for your wedding time
07:40:21 PM | Mark_M | @garbee i agree, i feel that if web designer, u should know css, its ur main job, even if css3
07:40:24 PM | Scorpio55 | Dave_Maydew possibly Lotus Symphony
07:40:32 PM | BitSprocket | Tons!
07:40:40 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, I see CSS as code, which it is, therefore it is the dev's job.
07:40:48 PM | Dave_Maydew | I'll stick to KompoZer
07:41:06 PM | Mark_M | \@garbee, np man, il lhave to agree/disagree.. no hard ffeelings
07:41:10 PM | Garbee | Let the designer design, in Photoshop, hand the PSD to the dev to do all the code work, that way it is done properly and they know what is going on vs having css they didn't code.
07:41:15 PM | BitSprocket | Saw the vinyette
07:41:29 PM | Mark_M | i geuss im getting ripped off at work then! lolz
07:41:33 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, Glad we agree!
07:41:35 PM | BitSprocket | Very cool! Thanks.
07:41:37 PM | Mark_M | ill just draw from nowz on hahah
07:41:41 PM | King_Arthur | very nice Robbie
07:42:09 PM | GoodGuy | Can you take off a bunch of pounds using GIMP?
07:42:25 PM | BitSprocket | Toothpaste commercials anyone?
07:42:29 PM | Garbee | I see it that way.. Designer = The person who designs. Developer = The one that codes. When the design stuff does code, it makes the dev work harder since they need to decipher it. But, if one is both Designer and Developer, then it depends on how you feel about it.
07:42:32 PM | agamotto | Mark_M- It is like translating, insist on being extra for each language.
07:42:38 PM | Mark_M | @garbee, what i have to do at work is... mock up web graphic, then slice it, write html/css to make it LOOK like pic... then hand it to dev who writes php and javascript to make the Behaviour of site, thats all dev
07:42:39 PM | Yazid1965 | The Joker line...Why so serious? LOL
07:42:41 PM | evermind | goodguy, yep, iwarp works further down as well
07:42:43 PM | RavenLords | lol
07:42:45 PM | Garbee | I personally am doing the desing and code for the new store site, I am keeping both things completely seperate.
07:42:49 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, that picture looks exactly like you!
07:43:00 PM | agamotto | Mark_M- Paid extra, that should be
07:43:02 PM | GoodGuy | Neat
07:43:03 PM | Dennis_Kelley | GoodGuy - are you saying TheChrista needs pounds off?
07:43:05 PM | _Jot_ | look ma, I'm on TV again
07:43:14 PM | Garbee | Yea, I'm with agamotto. The dev's job is to do the code work.
07:43:19 PM | GoodGuy | No I am saying I do!
07:43:30 PM | Garbee | HTML/CSS = code, therefore it falls under the dev in my book.
07:43:44 PM | Dennis_Kelley | GoodGuy! Ok!!
07:43:49 PM | Michaeliowa | lol
07:43:51 PM | BitSprocket | This hast to make it into the clips show for the end of the year right?
07:44:03 PM | Mark_M | my boss would argue that its only styling code,, plus its fairly easy etc,, comparted to writing function / loops etc
07:44:05 PM | agamotto | Not being paid for different job descriptions is one of the reasons I dropped out of the CS/IT market...
07:44:27 PM | BitSprocket | RobbieF - Thanks for that!
07:44:43 PM | evermind | one plugin she will never forgetz
07:44:43 PM | King_Arthur | RobbieF - Thanks for that!
07:44:46 PM | Garbee | agamotto, I do this stuff, but if I do websites to get paid for it, I make sure if I am doing all the work I will get paid for Design and dev work.
07:44:58 PM | Mark_M | i wonder what robbieF view is? does css/html = web designer, or developer
07:45:06 PM | BitSprocket | RobbieF - You should consider putting the episode number in your lower thirds
07:45:18 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Its Free!
07:45:22 PM | GoodGuy | If you can make GIMP see thru clothes, The TSA wants it lol
07:45:27 PM | agamotto | eehehehehe
07:45:35 PM | Garbee | Robbie, Are you targeting this show at me?
07:45:39 PM | Dave_Maydew | Libre Office rocks
07:45:57 PM | Mark_M | i use Libre
07:45:59 PM | Mark_M | is cool
07:46:06 PM | Garbee | I use MS Office 2010 Pro.
07:46:14 PM | Dave_Maydew | I've installed it on the inlaws Windows XP machine
07:46:21 PM | Mark_M | bagh Garbee! expensive ms stuffZ!
07:46:28 PM | Mark_M | :P
07:46:29 PM | agamotto | I even have my mother using LibreOffice.... the ribbon in M$2007 ticks her off to no end...
07:46:32 PM | BitSprocket | Libre Office is very cool although the impress program does tend to bork power point imports though.
07:46:34 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, I have Technet Subscription.
07:46:36 PM | evermind | i dont use any office atm
07:46:38 PM | Dave_Maydew | Can't afford software like that
07:46:41 PM | Garbee | and MS is cheap compared to adobe suites.
07:46:46 PM | Mark_M | @garbee im stirring u up mate
07:47:00 PM | Dave_Maydew | lol
07:47:05 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, I don't get stirred up during shows, catch me during the week.
07:47:09 PM | Mark_M | @garbee cause u said same for my adobe stuff etc lol :)
07:47:21 PM | agamotto | Mark_M- give him a kick in the prang while you are at it :)
07:47:33 PM | Garbee | Adobe stuff is expensive. Compare the CS5 Master suite to MS Office 2010 Pro, see the price difference.
07:47:48 PM | Mark_M | @garbee,, ,,, here we go...
07:47:50 PM | Mark_M | :P
07:47:53 PM | loki2 | does it open .xlsx ?
07:47:57 PM | Garbee | Then, compare them both to nano and go WOW!
07:48:13 PM | Mark_M | i quit WOW years ago :)
07:48:15 PM | Garbee | loki2, They do have xml encoded format support, but it is not guarenteed.
07:48:16 PM | Dave_Maydew | They've improved Libre Spreadsheet
07:48:17 PM | pyrosrock | i have to say that every time i try to use GIMP i get NOWHERE!
07:48:45 PM | Garbee | pyrosrock, I spend hours trying to figure out basic things, then eventually figure it out by random luck.
07:48:47 PM | loki2 | how does libre office compare to openoffice?
07:48:50 PM | agamotto | Just make sure to find out which version of M$ they are using...
07:49:01 PM | BitSprocket | pyrosrock, I used to have the same problem but there are TONS of tutorial vids on youtube and they are quite good.
07:49:06 PM | Garbee | loki2, Libre is a fork of Open after the Oracle aquisition. It is much further developed now.
07:49:17 PM | Garbee | Most of the OpenOffice team left Oracle to dev LibreOffice.
07:49:17 PM | agamotto | loki2- same thing, with tons of small improvements, no more Oracle delays
07:49:20 PM | Dave_Maydew | Libre Office is far more better
07:49:21 PM | King_Arthur | loki2 just more free as in freedom
07:49:23 PM | loki2 | cool
07:49:29 PM | Bubblehead | Which word is a clone of Wordperfect and Wordperfect is a clone of Star Office
07:49:38 PM | Dave_Maydew | Scribus is another application I run
07:49:47 PM | pyrosrock | loki2 same thing just owned bf the libre open foundation and kept up to date
07:50:01 PM | pyrosrock | orical sold it
07:50:07 PM | Garbee | The ribbon has made things too easy to go back to the chaotic taskbars.
07:50:30 PM | Dave_Maydew | Install Libre with the PPA
07:50:32 PM | Garbee | The Ribbon is super clean compared to the taskbars.
07:50:43 PM | jonathon | I would say the more familiar you are with the non-free versions the more you will dislike the open-source versions. Just hard to change once you learn one way.
07:50:44 PM | BitSprocket | Garbee, just wait until the HUD appears in 12.04 - you'll not need the ribbon any more
07:50:44 PM | agamotto | For those of us used to keyboard shortcuts, the ribbon is annoying
07:50:51 PM | Dave_Maydew | it removes Open Office for you
07:51:00 PM | Garbee | BitSprocket, I used HUD, it is worthless in its current state.
07:51:03 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Thanks RobbieF
07:51:14 PM | OompaLoompa | When will you start paying Christa?
07:51:18 PM | Garbee | RobbieF, Are you targeting this show at me? Pointing all these free solutions out.
07:51:21 PM | agamotto | BitSprocket- that is one thing I am actually looking forward to
07:51:26 PM | BitSprocket | Garbee, It is, but imagine how awesome it will be once it's had time to bake
07:51:28 PM | Dave_Maydew | How about Scribus RobbieF??
07:51:37 PM | chrisreich | back when RobbieF had hair, that is.
07:51:38 PM | Dennis_Kelley | RobbieF - have you ever worked with Android Tablets?
07:51:49 PM | Dave_Maydew | I have
07:51:52 PM | Dave_Maydew | hehehehehe
07:52:08 PM | Garbee | BitSprocket, It is just used currently to access the menu's, pointless to me. I need to type in " close tab " in ff and it close the current tab, and do other useful things like that before it has a point to me.
07:52:11 PM | Dave_Maydew | Both the Chinese ones and Samsung one
07:52:11 PM | agamotto | Or dealing with versioned file formats!
07:52:13 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Dave_Maydew - what kind and version
07:52:27 PM | emiel1976 | I am waiting for the Rapberry Pi that can be orderd in 6 ours
07:52:42 PM | Dave_Maydew | I have the APAD running a custom ROM
07:52:53 PM | King_Arthur | Rapberry Pi in hours?? in Canada?
07:53:05 PM | ledzep | RobbieF How well does Ubuntu run on a tablet?
07:53:05 PM | G_Dog1985_ | haha
07:53:09 PM | BitSprocket | agamotto, when it's fully cooked, it will make life for those that are not 'computer savvy' easier. Garbee, you're right but when you can't find the option you're looking for, it will work better than gnome-do
07:53:09 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Dave_Maydew - ever work with a Nextbook
07:53:13 PM | Garbee | King_Arthur, They go on sale at midnight I do believe.
07:53:21 PM | emiel1976 | 6 gm time so 7our in the morning here
07:53:22 PM | Dave_Maydew | no
07:53:27 PM | BitSprocket | Garbee, all a matter of perspective I guess
07:53:32 PM | agamotto | Not the lovely people from Burkina Faso wanting help with their money-laundering?
07:53:35 PM | Dave_Maydew | but I have used the ASUS Transformer
07:53:43 PM | Dave_Maydew | what a Tablet
07:53:44 PM | Garbee | BitSprocket, I rarely have an issue finding things. For a general user, it is great. For me, pointless in its current state.
07:53:44 PM | Mark_M | i heard backtrack runs on asus transformer,,, that all i heard
07:53:58 PM | ledzep | ICS runs nice on the Transformer
07:54:13 PM | Dave_Maydew | Dads had a call saying his machine was running slow
07:54:14 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Dave_Maydew - any good guides out there for making a custom ROM
07:54:14 PM | Garbee | HUD seems to just be a search for the features of the software, which *I* know. but a normal user, may not.
07:54:17 PM | BitSprocket | I heard Optimus Prime uses the HUD tho - LOL
07:54:31 PM | Dave_Maydew | he told them to go fourth and....
07:54:36 PM | emiel1976 | Ubuntu runs on it so i think backtrack will do also
07:54:44 PM | OompaLoompa | Linux must be using mindcontrol on RobbieF or they have blackmail on him to get him to constantly promote them.
07:54:53 PM | BitSprocket | They?
07:55:10 PM | Dennis_Kelley | the bad guys!!
07:55:12 PM | Garbee | I think he means Linus.
07:55:15 PM | King_Arthur | OompaLoompa or he is just smart.
07:55:18 PM | agamotto | "My windows are triple-glazed, thank you very much. They were installed just last year, by one of your competitors." click
07:55:21 PM | BitSprocket | Or the kids under the stairs...
07:55:39 PM | chrisreich | no need for politeness in such cases, I opine
07:55:47 PM | Guest_7026 | My friend actually thought that Bill Gates was out to distribute money for free
07:55:50 PM | GoodGuy | Say I'll call you back lol
07:55:51 PM | Garbee | If they are calling from India, then it is very believable.
07:55:54 PM | Mark_M | lol
07:56:04 PM | Dave_Maydew | I've been waiting for the same call Dads had... I was looking forward to say Sorry I aint running WINDOWS
07:56:21 PM | emiel1976 | lol
07:56:31 PM | Garbee | Guest_7026, He does through charity work, especially in developing nations. He just doesn't go out on the street and hand out cash to anyone.
07:56:37 PM | agamotto | RobbieF- Even the stuff from Burkina Faso?
07:56:37 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, there is this guy on tv, that says he will help me if I get phishing-email, should I trust him?
07:56:41 PM | RavenLords | nop win is no good
07:56:42 PM | Mark_M | by the way, i got a malicius script warning from cat5 last night? some url from xxx.in/counter.php etc

07:57:14 PM | OompaLoompa | All this time I thought it was Robbie Frankfurter

07:57:18 PM | Garbee | Mark_M, There have been some issues lately, we will look into that one. Thanks.

08:12:27 PM | TheChrista | It's the Wacom Intuos 4 tablet pyrosrock
08:12:37 PM | agamotto | Hmmm, the American version of Top Gear is on tonight... might actually watch it.
08:12:37 PM | TheChrista | I have the same one at home that I use for everything
08:12:43 PM | _Jot_ | so it is really intiutous to use?
08:13:00 PM | TheChrista | once you get used to it, it's really hard to go back to something that's less precise with pressure and movement
08:13:02 PM | Dennis_Kelley | RobbieF - Great show! Chat with you soon!
08:13:06 PM | RobbieF | thanks
08:13:07 PM | RobbieF | seeya soon
08:13:15 PM | pyrosrock | im sticking with my keyboard and mouse
08:13:21 PM | agamotto | TheChrista- Sort of like trying to type with mittens?
08:13:29 PM | _Jot_ | do you use it for movement and such too, or just for drawing and such, heChrista?
08:13:46 PM | OompaLoompa | After a tablet could never go back to a mouse, feels like being crippled.
08:14:06 PM | pyrosrock | _Jot_ christa is now a man!
08:14:20 PM | agamotto | I have always preferred trackballs for some reason
08:14:25 PM | ajamison5579 | RobbieF sorry was not here for the show daughter's bday today so we were at Chuckie'Cheese
08:14:37 PM | _Jot_ | I do have a touchscreen-monitor, it is not quite a tablet, but it makes me understand why such a thing can be comfortable
08:14:47 PM | agamotto | ajamison5579- Hmmm, sounds like you have been appropriately punished...
08:14:54 PM | pyrosrock | i can never imagine trying to shoot peaple with a trackball or a slate!
08:15:16 PM | _Jot_ | ajamison5579, Robbie was very worried, every 5 minutes of the show he was like 'well, if ajamison was here he would know the answer' and then answer the question
08:15:16 PM | ajamison5579 | lol
08:15:20 PM | agamotto | pyrosrock- Nah, I have the Nostromo for that kind of thing
08:15:43 PM | maxwell6307 | night all take care
08:15:50 PM | ajamison5579 | _jot_ lol if only my mere presence inspired such greatness I would be employeed
08:15:59 PM | pyrosrock | agamotto a waht?
08:16:09 PM | agamotto | Nostromo speed pad
08:17:01 PM | agamotto | I just wish they made such things in right-handed versions, for those of us who prefer to move cursors with our left hands.
08:17:39 PM | pyrosrock | ah i still think ill keep my G510 keyboard and RAT7 mouse
08:17:41 PM | Garbee | pyrosrock, I was earlier today, now I'm not.
08:18:26 PM | pyrosrock | Garbee i gat it isatalled on my com and the whole mouse follow and click is screwed up!
08:18:29 PM | ajamison5579 | anyone here play the DIablo 3 beta
08:18:47 PM | pyrosrock | i can randomly click on stuf but not other stuf
08:18:49 PM | Garbee | pyrosrock, I never had that issue.
08:18:58 PM | Garbee | Sounds like a bug.
08:19:04 PM | pyrosrock | it is massive
08:19:14 PM | _Jot_ | ajamison5579, I have a diablo3 beta account
08:19:16 PM | Garbee | Re-install is my suggestion, or learn keyboard shortcuts.
08:19:20 PM | pyrosrock | i had it on the live cd and after install
08:19:42 PM | pyrosrock | yeah been basicaly using the keyboard
08:19:48 PM | agamotto | Well, I think I am going to wander off and give the feline and canine some attention.
08:19:54 PM | ajamison5579 | I am sorry but Diablo3 seems to animeish to me not nearly as rhobust as D2 hope that changes by release
08:20:16 PM | Garbee | See you guys soon.
08:20:40 PM | _Jot_ | ajmison5579, I haven't played a lot of the missions yet, but it feels a lot like the first diablo to me, I like it a lot
08:21:08 PM | ajamison5579 | it just lacks something when I play it seems disapointing
08:21:16 PM | pyrosrock | i have only played the first one
08:21:45 PM | pyrosrock | ajmison5579 probs why it is in beta!
08:22:17 PM | ajamison5579 | well I played SC2 beta and that game felt more complete then D3
08:22:19 PM | ajamison5579 | in beta
08:22:28 PM | pyrosrock | i hate people that judge a game of the beta
08:22:42 PM | pyrosrock | off*
08:22:45 PM | ajamison5579 | I am not saying the game will be bad when finished
08:22:53 PM | pyrosrock | sc2?
08:23:04 PM | ajamison5579 | just currently seems a bit underdeveloped for beta seems more alpha grade material
08:23:10 PM | ajamison5579 | Starcraft 2
08:23:41 PM | pyrosrock | oh of cource i still like sc better than 2
08:24:10 PM | ajamison5579 | lol
08:24:30 PM | ajamison5579 | True I do not like the whole release the game in 3 parts kind of crap
08:24:46 PM | _Jot_ | you mean diablo?
08:24:53 PM | ajamison5579 | Bioware did it with Masseffect but it was 3 Full complete games not 3 freaking chapters sold sperately
08:24:55 PM | _Jot_ | or mass effect for example?
08:25:10 PM | ajamison5579 | No Starcraft 2 is sold as 3 seperate chapters
08:25:18 PM | pyrosrock | but when i first played starcraft i had massive lag and now u can run it through wine on a netbook!
08:26:20 PM | ajamison5579 | I ment look at MassEffect they knew there would be 3 games before they released 1 but each game was a full independant story that linked to the others
08:26:40 PM | ajamison5579 | Starcraft 2 is one chapter that makes you need to buy the next chapter and wait 3 years for the last one
08:27:59 PM | pyrosrock | mm i have been playing DS3 recently took me 2 months to got into it after DS2 but i like it now
08:29:39 PM | pyrosrock | and i dont mean i played it 4 2 months
08:30:17 PM | ajamison5579 | DS 1 and 2 were nice not play 3 yet so can not judge that
08:30:29 PM | pyrosrock | just for like 20 min each time till i accepeted was
08:30:49 PM | pyrosrock | it is good id recomend it but it is a bit difrent
08:31:46 PM | ajamison5579 | that was like Dragon age 2 everyone hated it thought it was horribly done and I loved it only complaint was that they resused maps way to often
08:31:51 PM | pyrosrock | like u can only chose 1 of 4 char and only do what thet char is not whatever skills u want but other wise is good
08:34:17 PM | ajamison5579 | ah sound interesting
08:39:21 PM | TheChrista | slow chatroom tonight folks
08:39:31 PM | Garbee | TheChrista, You still hanging around?
08:39:35 PM | TheChrista | someone tell me something that would shock and amaze me
08:39:38 PM | Garbee | Or is this Robbie in desguise?
08:39:52 PM | Garbee | TheChrista, You look like a troll.
08:40:00 PM | TheChrista | I most certainly am. I haven't seen Robbie or you fine folks for 2 months
08:40:05 PM | _Jot_ | it must be Robbie doing the shownotes, with a wig on, because who else would stay up this long
08:40:16 PM | TheChrista | I have to get my fix before I leave for another 2 months
08:40:29 PM | TheChrista | haha, a troll!? How aweful. I am not sure how to remedy this
08:40:45 PM | Garbee | TheChrista, You said shock... I left out the amaze part.
08:41:30 PM | TheChrista | Haha, how rude
08:41:38 PM | TheChrista | If I didn't know any better I would be offended
08:41:52 PM | Garbee | So what are the general areas you have covered in classes for web dev?
08:43:52 PM | TheChrista | I find that there's been slow classes that I feel like I already know the things they're teaching, and I feel like there's some classes that are completely new content. So I haven't learned as much in quantity as I thought I would of
08:44:15 PM | TheChrista | We've been focusing on selectors and how to more accurately select elements without the use of id's and classes
08:44:19 PM | _Jot_ | That can mean it's good, because you are very smar,t or bad because te material is old
08:44:38 PM | Guest_4673 | hello everyone! this is my first time here. So how does this work?
08:44:40 PM | TheChrista | then we've learnt layout types like liquid layouts vs elastic vs static and a mixture of all
08:44:47 PM | Garbee | I am building the new site for my dads store... and needless to say I am nowhere near as good of a designer as you're Christa.
08:44:54 PM | _Jot_ | hi Guest, welcome to the chatroom, you're doing well so far
08:45:01 PM | TheChrista | Hey Guest_4673
08:45:06 PM | Guest_4673 | Cool!
08:45:09 PM | Garbee | Guest_4673, You talk, if we feel like what you say warrents a response, we respond.
08:45:18 PM | Garbee | Or, we chat, and if you want to jump in, you can.
08:45:23 PM | TheChrista | It takes practice Garbee, but I'm sure you're doing just fine
08:45:32 PM | Guest_4673 | Hey Jot! I recognize that name from the videos
08:45:47 PM | _Jot_ | Yes! It is me! Hello again :)
08:46:09 PM | _Jot_ | you also may recognize RobbieF, or Robbie Ferguson, and TheChrista, as Christa Wells
08:46:13 PM | _Jot_ | and of course many other names from the show
08:46:17 PM | TheChrista | You just missed the live show Guest_4673. It ended 45 minutes ago, but the guys in here chat about all sorts of interesting techy stuff after the show
08:46:32 PM | Guest_4673 | yep!
08:46:34 PM | Garbee | TheChrista, I can't wait to show you what I come up with... here is the current thing I built, but am replacing with something else as we speak, but I'm keeping the background image, it is nice... http://lemonstand.untamedworlds.com
08:46:45 PM | Garbee | And now the inner content decides to mess up rendering again.
08:46:49 PM | Garbee | Great...
08:46:53 PM | Guest_4673 | I did!? man...bummer
08:47:02 PM | Garbee | Oh well, that codebase is pretty much scrapped anyways.
08:47:29 PM | Guest_4673 | ok, I'll try again next week. You guys have a good evening!
08:48:11 PM | Garbee | Guest_4673, You can still hang out and chat.
08:48:26 PM | TheChrista | Absolutely, we love to have you here Guest_4673
08:48:47 PM | Garbee | Christa, You don't come see us during the week! Ok, once or twice I have seen you pop in.
08:48:47 PM | Guest_4673 | ok, cool
08:49:01 PM | TheChrista | Garbee, it's not looking too bad. I like the wood look background you have in there
08:49:14 PM | Garbee | It gets lonely in here... I generally only have Robbie to talk to all day, and that gets boring, and he has work to do.
08:49:34 PM | Guest_4673 | I noticed that you guys were talking about design. What kind of designing?
08:49:41 PM | Garbee | Yea, and the menu is Jquery, so it is going to work well with touchscreens.
08:50:05 PM | _Jot_ | they're talking about webdesign, Guest_4673
08:50:08 PM | Garbee | Just the fact that I am mediocre compared to the godess of design designated " TheChrista ".
08:50:18 PM | pyrosrock | Garbee i try to bee here when im awake which is when ur assleep
08:50:18 PM | Guest_4673 | Boring!? how could it get boring? Seems that you guys are always having a good time!
08:50:38 PM | TheChrista | Garbee is designing and coding a website right now
08:50:43 PM | Garbee | Guest_4673, When you are here almost every day, all week... Things get boring.
08:50:53 PM | TheChrista | I'm a graphic designer, so I design everything from logos to billboards to websites
08:51:13 PM | Guest_4673 | sounds cool christa
08:51:16 PM | _Jot_ | not that people don't appreciate each other, just that it isn't busy all the time
08:51:31 PM | Garbee | I went with the wood background to stand-out a bit. Making things feel just more "normal" than some random color as the background, or some odd pattern.
08:51:32 PM | TheChrista | Haha, I've have many years of experience and practice Garbee
08:51:36 PM | Guest_4673 | where are you from Jot?
08:51:36 PM | TheChrista | It comes with time
08:51:47 PM | Guest_4673 | yes, practice makes perfect
08:51:49 PM | _Jot_ | I'm from planet Calypso, but I live in The Netherlands
08:52:06 PM | Garbee | TheChrista, Plus I fail at GIMP... Really, I spent 2 hours trying to figure out how to draw an ellipse, then I randomly found it while trying to do somethign else.
08:52:07 PM | Guest_4673 | funny Jot. I'm from Texas.
08:52:22 PM | Garbee | Although, I learned today that Powerpoint and Publisher make 2 amazing wireframing tools.
08:52:29 PM | _Jot_ | there's other people from Texas here too sometimes, so you're not the only one :)
08:52:37 PM | TheChrista | haha, I'm sure I'd be the same Garbee....I'm a Photoshop pro, and a Gimp failure
08:52:43 PM | Garbee | I'm in Virginia.
08:53:01 PM | Guest_4673 | hi Garbee!
08:53:02 PM | Garbee | TheChrista, I mainly hate this 3 window layout, it is so confusing to me.
08:53:07 PM | pyrosrock | im a GIMP falure and a photoshop one 2!
08:53:48 PM | Guest_4673 | How can you be a pro at Photoshop and fail at Gimp? Isn't Gimp easier?
08:53:55 PM | Garbee | Just in case anyone is ever making an Ecommerce store and doesn't want to code the backend themselves... http://www.lemonstand.com = Amazing! $300 USD though, but worth every penny.
08:54:07 PM | Garbee | Guest_4673, Depends on how you learned things.
08:54:16 PM | TheChrista | I've been using Photoshop for so long that I know all the tools and where they are and I'm used to the set up
08:54:41 PM | Garbee | I for one, am learning GIMP, since it is free and just as powerful as Photoshop, but Christa was taught on it and has used it so long, she gets Photoshop better than GIMP.
08:54:41 PM | Guest_4673 | TheChrista, yes, I guess that would make sense
08:54:46 PM | TheChrista | the little changes with GIMP make my job a lot more difficult, not because it's any less of a program than Photoshop, but because it's not routine for me
08:54:47 PM | ajamison5579 | u did that site Garbee
08:54:51 PM | Garbee | Free vs Paid != anything to do with ease of use.
08:55:25 PM | pyrosrock | TheChrista but how can that bee cause i got 2 know CS3 then everything went haywire with 4 and 5
08:55:28 PM | Garbee | ajamison5579, Yes, that lemonstand sub-domain is 100% me currently. But I am porting a portion of that code into a framework Lemonstand provides, which ends up doing a ton of other things I need and makes it easy for import.
08:56:04 PM | TheChrista | It's the same as the evolution of anything. Yes there were changes, but to me they made sense. They were changes that the design industry had been asking for and were then incorporated into the software
08:56:08 PM | Garbee | I went haywire with Office 2003 to Office 2007, but after I learned the Ribbon I can never go back.
08:56:15 PM | TheChrista | So it took very little time to get used to the changes
08:56:25 PM | ajamison5579 | Garbee makes me a bit leary about digging up old andyjamison.com archives from my days in HTML class
08:56:31 PM | ajamison5579 | would blow them out of the water
08:56:33 PM | ajamison5579 | lol
08:57:01 PM | Garbee | ajamison5579, I have the power of modern FF web dev tools to help me out.
08:57:07 PM | Garbee | They have saved me TONS of time tracking things down.
08:57:22 PM | Garbee | FF has made me happy for life with their toolset, and extensibility.
08:57:43 PM | Garbee | http://www.tiikoni.com/tis/view/?id=292a2f6 = My current FF display.
08:57:47 PM | Guest_4673 | Garbee, sounds like everything would get expensive trying to keep up with all the software.
08:57:55 PM | ajamison5579 | I can not use Firefox for windows anymore it just has to many times where it crawls for no reason when the same pages load fine the day before or god forbit in IE
08:58:01 PM | pyrosrock | dude i have a copy of photoshop before CS it is the best so easy to use just like flash7 easier to use than CS3
08:58:03 PM | Garbee | Guest_4673, Expensive for what?
08:58:29 PM | Guest_4673 | photoshop and office software
08:58:32 PM | Garbee | ajamison5579, Have you tried 10? 8 fixed a ton of little bugs like that, 9 I think is where the memory leak finally got plugged.
08:58:49 PM | Garbee | I have a technet subscription, so Office is basically free for me to use.
08:58:55 PM | Garbee | Photoshop, I don't purchase nor pirate.
08:59:04 PM | Guest_4673 | garbee, understood
08:59:08 PM | ajamison5579 | IE is sadly my main browser now
08:59:23 PM | Garbee | It is like Lemonstand with me, I will pay $300 for it to make my life tons easier since I know and love the framework, but someone like Robbie may not since he can do it himself for free.
08:59:30 PM | pyrosrock | ugh IE is so virus prone!
08:59:42 PM | ajamison5579 | FF just crawls to many times and Chrome so sucks regardless of what people say
08:59:47 PM | TheChrista | I don't buy every new version of CS, I wait a couple years until it becomes difficult to send files to printers or clients because of the old version, and then I'll upgrade
08:59:54 PM | Garbee | pyrosrock, IE on Win 7 is actually the safest browser according to some security experts.
08:59:55 PM | Guest_4673 | $300.00 does sound fair if it saves you alot of headache
09:00:07 PM | ajamison5579 | pyroscrock only if one does not know how to weild it properly Luckily I do
09:00:17 PM | Garbee | Guest_4673, and it is CHEAP compared to other solutions, and you get updates for life.
09:00:21 PM | Garbee | Plus self-hosting.
09:00:32 PM | Garbee | and the community is great, along with the documentation.
09:00:33 PM | ajamison5579 | I used to be a hardcore FF suporter
09:00:46 PM | ajamison5579 | now at least on WIndows its to buggy
09:01:05 PM | Garbee | I'm just so happy with Lemonstand personally. I was going to run it as a sub-domain for the store only, but after using it decided to make it into the entire CMS for the site.
09:01:06 PM | Guest_4673 | garbee, nice!
09:01:20 PM | pyrosrock | im using FF 11 and no problems other than flash
09:01:25 PM | Garbee | That also will let me kill Drupal 7.x which is becoming cumbersom at times.
09:01:51 PM | Garbee | ajamison5579, I have seen no bugs personally on the stable FF's in Windows.
09:01:59 PM | ajamison5579 | pyrosrock you do not get periodic times where it slows to a crawl when loading a page for no reason
09:02:12 PM | Garbee | My only gripe is needing to upgrade to 11 to get the 3d inspector.
09:02:15 PM | ajamison5579 | Garbee ok then maybe its just me
09:02:36 PM | ajamison5579 | I also hate that a new version is relased now every week and half my extentions stop working
09:02:37 PM | Garbee | It could actually be bugs. I tend to never hit them, even when others complain and complain.
09:02:44 PM | Garbee | Not anymore ajamison.
09:02:53 PM | pyrosrock | ajamison5579 nope all fast 4 me though my com may power through any issues
09:03:19 PM | Garbee | The only reason they are not compatible now is like with FF11, where they are changing API calls in the SDK ( in the latest they are removing a call ), so everything is marked as unsupported until they get updated.
09:03:29 PM | Guest_4673 | Well Everyone it was nice chatting with you all for a bit even though I did not really say much. I've got to go but I'll try to be on time next week.
09:03:29 PM | ajamison5579 | Pyrosrock thats the thing its not a computer issue its a connection latency issue between the firefox renderer and the server serving the code
09:03:36 PM | Garbee | But if no SDK/API changes are made, then all addons are now automatically marked as good for the next FF release.
09:03:46 PM | TheChrista | Well folks. It is time for me to wander home and spend some time with my fuzzy puppies and kitties
09:03:47 PM | Garbee | See ya Guest_4673
09:04:03 PM | Garbee | TheChrista, I still havn't seen images of these puppies, so they are not real to me.
09:04:23 PM | ajamison5579 | I may try FF10 but do a fresh install like uninstall what I have and wipe all registry mentions to it
09:04:25 PM | TheChrista | Haha, I will send pictures of them in as a viewer question for the next time I'm on
09:04:27 PM | ajamison5579 | then re-install
09:04:35 PM | pyrosrock | ajamison5579 well i have slow internet but it is no slower ever in FF to anything else
09:04:45 PM | TheChrista | and then I'll "conveniently" read my own viewer question and you will all be forced to marvel in their cuteness
09:04:51 PM | Garbee | ajamison5579, Revo uninstaller, such a great tool.
09:05:06 PM | pyrosrock | ajamison5579 go straight to FF11
09:05:09 PM | Garbee | TheChrista, You better! I'm sick of not seeing them.
09:05:24 PM | ajamison5579 | pyrosrock see that was me 2 months ago then FF started acting goofy
09:06:05 PM | ajamison5579 | ehh Beta how stable are FF betas
09:06:09 PM | Garbee | ajamison, stick with the ESR then, they will be stable since they are enterprise releases. Supported for a year or so.
09:06:18 PM | Garbee | FF Beta's are actually pretty stable.
09:06:25 PM | TheChrista | Me too Garbee...I would have many more animals if I could afford to take care of them all
09:06:27 PM | pyrosrock | ajamison5579 what was u?
09:06:28 PM | Garbee | It is the nightly you are mainly worried about.
09:06:41 PM | Garbee | I don't want more than 3 dogs in my house.
09:06:49 PM | TheChrista | Anyways folks....it was really great to chat with ya'll again! I will see you in approximately 2 months
09:06:50 PM | ajamison5579 | not having FF run any slower then anything else Pyrosrock
09:06:58 PM | Garbee | We do have a 4th dog, but she stays at my grandpa's house. She is about 14 years old now.
09:07:04 PM | TheChrista | Don't get into too much trouble while I'm gone, but make sure to give Robbie a hard time for me!
09:07:14 PM | TheChrista | bye bye
09:07:17 PM | ajamison5579 | Nooooooooooooo You must check in once a week we demand it
09:07:21 PM | ajamison5579 | dang
09:07:39 PM | Garbee | I'm going to sleep now so tomorrow come sooner.
09:07:47 PM | Garbee | I can't wait for Win 8 Consumer Preview.
09:07:50 PM | ajamison5579 | Sleep is for the week
09:07:55 PM | ajamison5579 | weak
09:07:59 PM | G_Dog1985_ | same here Garbee
09:08:25 PM | Garbee | I don't think anyone in this room is looking forward to it as much as I am.
09:08:56 PM | ajamison5579 | Garbee Garbee Garbee Windows 8 will ethier be the masterpeace they claim or an epic fail
09:08:59 PM | G_Dog1985_ | window 8 need toch sreen
09:09:11 PM | ajamison5579 | give the one on one off history of Windows I am guessing the latter
09:09:16 PM | Garbee | ajamison5579, It will take time to sink in. Just like Win 95.
09:09:31 PM | G_Dog1985_ | haha
09:09:34 PM | G_Dog1985_ | wow
09:09:45 PM | pyrosrock | haha 95 was EPIC! but still crap
09:09:46 PM | G_Dog1985_ | snap
09:09:52 PM | Garbee | I am getting into it since I am excited about what this finally means for me, one interface across all my devices that all share the same apps.
09:10:01 PM | ajamison5579 | i was refering more to stability and bug free ness they had win 95, fail win98 SE better ME fail
09:10:05 PM | ajamison5579 | XP better
09:10:10 PM | ajamison5579 | Vista Fail
09:10:13 PM | ajamison5579 | WIn 7 better
09:10:30 PM | ajamison5579 | so based on that WIn 8 fail?
09:10:36 PM | ajamison5579 | Win 9 Better?
09:10:40 PM | Garbee | I'm not getting into Vista... People don't really understand what happened there too well I tend to find.
09:10:41 PM | pyrosrock | mm i think so
09:10:42 PM | G_Dog1985_ | haha
09:11:06 PM | Garbee | Win 9 will be better for Metro in Enterprise since that is when they *should* be looking towards app control in Metro, right now there is none through group policy.
09:11:26 PM | ajamison5579 | Vista Chris Pirrilo (just to name one person) listed at least 10 things that he though wrong with Vista in Beta
09:11:28 PM | Garbee | Still, I need to see what 9 bring beyond 8.
09:11:30 PM | ajamison5579 | they were right
09:11:37 PM | ajamison5579 | and win 7 fixed them
09:12:00 PM | ajamison5579 | I liked Vista but Win 7 is so much better performance wise
09:12:00 PM | pyrosrock | win 7 was what vista was prommised to be!
09:12:29 PM | ajamison5579 | right hence the one on one off theory
09:12:48 PM | Garbee | Yea, 7 is better since they scrapped so much uneeded code and really optimized it, but Vista failed in tons due to crappy driver support from third parties *ahem* nvidia *ahem* not writing their drivers properly because they are lazy bums.
09:13:12 PM | ajamison5579 | lol no arguement there garbee
09:13:14 PM | Garbee | All driver writers at Nvidia for windows when Vista launched should have been fired.
09:13:27 PM | Garbee | There performance was 100% unacceptable.
09:13:36 PM | ajamison5579 | Much like ATI now
09:13:38 PM | ajamison5579 | lol
09:13:39 PM | pyrosrock | hmm thats what nvidia shuld do refuse to support win 8 and make the world a better place
09:14:10 PM | ajamison5579 | pyrosrock lol keep dreaming about 80% of their revenue comes from Windows
09:14:11 PM | Garbee | I actually talked with Geek Squad guys the other week, they told me straight up, 95% of their issues at the local branch (which is a ton of issues) were drivers. The other 5% was 3% applications not being updated and 2% actually Vista
09:14:13 PM | Garbee | !
09:14:39 PM | pyrosrock | btw unless u are gaming ATI cards are 100X better!
09:14:50 PM | Garbee | Win 8 needs support, Metro is going to ease tech support so much after the initial launch and people go " wtf?! ".
09:15:21 PM | Garbee | Even gaming, you need to check benchmarks and see what the case is for each card, for some games, ATI is better, other types, Nvidia.
09:15:22 PM | ajamison5579 | How is it going to easy tech support if anything tech support will get more dumb questions
09:15:40 PM | Garbee | and Nvidia is great in any situation I have seen, same with ATI. They each perform well.
09:15:58 PM | ajamison5579 | "Whats this goofy interface i am looking at where are my windows
09:16:14 PM | Garbee | ajamison, after a while, people won't really use the desktop, so most issues will go away since the experience is much more universal.
09:16:28 PM | ajamison5579 | techsupport: Sir that is Metro Customer: WHat the Beep is metro i asked for windows
09:16:34 PM | pyrosrock | no nvidia is shit CUDA SUCKS! is 100X worce than the ATI one
09:16:34 PM | Garbee | That is the goal, make the interfaces get out of the way, put content up front.
09:17:09 PM | ajamison5579 | Garbe I doubt it
09:17:17 PM | ajamison5579 | PC gaming is at a rise
09:17:19 PM | Garbee | ajamison, that is the point of view of those of us that really use Windows for multi-tasking. The *average* person, will do better within Metro.
09:17:38 PM | ajamison5579 | can not use PC games on a tablet
09:17:40 PM | Garbee | The Metro framework for applications using WinRT is so amazing on top of that.
09:18:00 PM | pyrosrock | Garbee i think if they change the metro start thing go down not sideways i think good but my mouse scroll down not sideways!
09:18:08 PM | ajamison5579 | And I prefer a desktop really whe gaming or working
09:18:21 PM | Garbee | pyrosrock, You can change the orientation of your monitor if you like.
09:18:33 PM | Garbee | ajamison, and you can get that if you prefer.
09:18:41 PM | Garbee | ^^ Not on ARM tablets though.
09:18:46 PM | ajamison5579 | lol
09:18:52 PM | Garbee | But ARM tablets are a special use-case anyways.
09:18:58 PM | ajamison5579 | I use Android for tablets anyway
09:19:14 PM | ajamison5579 | much more used to that
09:19:24 PM | Garbee | I am not buying a Tablet until I can get Win 8 on one, that way all my apps work across all my devices, period.
09:19:31 PM | pyrosrock | not reli cause a ARM netbook is much better but still wants a desktop IMHO
09:19:55 PM | Garbee | Here is the problem with ARM and the legacy desktop...
09:20:13 PM | pyrosrock | i know needs difrent cade
09:20:21 PM | pyrosrock | code*
09:21:26 PM | Garbee | Applications need to be completely recompiled from source for ARM. Why would MS allow people to recode? Push the Metro where you don't worry about enviornment and just run on WinRT, then let WinRT handle the low-level management/processing. By opening the legacy desktop on ARM tablets, they invite MORE tech support since we would need to explain *why* their apps don't work in an ARM desktop. Simplest way to help tech sup
09:21:26 PM | Garbee | port people, don't let it happen.
09:21:31 PM | Garbee | MS is making the proper call.
09:21:35 PM | ajamison5579 | ok must get my SWTOR fix
09:21:37 PM | Garbee | ^^ For once.
09:21:46 PM | Garbee | ajamison, Stop rubbing it in.
09:21:52 PM | ajamison5579 | lol
09:22:11 PM | pyrosrock | SWTOR?
09:22:14 PM | ajamison5579 | later people got a guild to run and alts to level
09:22:14 PM | Garbee | Yea.
09:22:21 PM | ajamison5579 | Starwars the old republic
09:22:25 PM | pyrosrock | oh
09:22:30 PM | Garbee | I want it, but don't want to pay $15 per month.
09:22:44 PM | Garbee | I *want* the story for the most part, I LOVE the TOR story.
09:22:49 PM | pyrosrock | well i got to go get killed in CSS
09:22:50 PM | ajamison5579 | neithor do I thank god for generous Xmas gifts lol
09:23:01 PM | pyrosrock | and mabie shoot somone
09:23:23 PM | Garbee | Well, i'm off to bed in await of tomorrow. If you don't see me tomorrow, it means I'm in heaven.
09:23:47 PM | pyrosrock | um... unlikly
09:24:41 PM | pyrosrock | RobbieF what time is it there?
09:24:47 PM | RobbieF | 9:24pm
