07:09:48 PMpyrosrock hmm ist just a wheel loading
07:09:54 PMinvincib1emutant RobbieF: Hi
07:09:55 PMagamotto GoodGuy- good reason
07:09:59 PMpyrosrock oh well
07:10:04 PMGoodGuy Saved by the baby... love that child already... I am sick of doctors for a bit
07:10:40 PM_Jot_ EricKidd, did you have to take your teeth out to eat that meat?
07:10:44 PMagamotto Lamb can be nice at times...
07:10:46 PMGarbee EricKidd, How many spankings did you get during the birthday song?
07:10:52 PMGarbee Did it go on for over an hour?
07:11:13 PMGarbee That joke might be a bit localized.
07:11:17 PMGoodGuy It can already
07:11:28 PMSovereignEntity quick sync
07:11:34 PMagamotto Um, since the specs were announced?
07:11:35 PMGarbee Advantage of what? I missed it.
07:11:49 PMSovereignEntity how about quick sync
07:11:56 PMinvincib1emutant RobbieF: It consumes less power too
07:12:01 PMGoodGuy I want an Ivy Bridge
07:12:02 PMpyrosrock hmm i seem to have lost my webcam
07:12:06 PMRavenLords amd all the way
07:12:14 PM_Jot_ pyrosrock, it is over there
07:12:14 PMGarbee Ivy Bridge *should* work fine with Ubuntu 12.04 at least.
07:12:47 PMinvincib1emutant i am waiting for it to coming out on all laptop, asus zenbook perhaps
07:12:51 PMGarbee RavenLords, AMD has officially stated "We no longer compete with Intel.", so I will not use them for a desktop anymore unless it is a specialized system.
07:12:52 PMagamotto I like being behind the curve... alot cheaper
07:12:56 PMchrisreich Phoronix.com reports Ivy Bridge and Linux play together great, RobbieF
07:13:04 PMSovereignEntity Garbee will Ubuntu take advantage of Quick Sync
07:13:17 PMpyrosrock _Jot_ where?
07:13:26 PM_Jot_ pyrosrock, right there *points*
07:13:37 PMinvincib1emutant RobbieF: I learnt that it performs better and less power consuming
07:13:39 PMGoodGuy Buy an Ivy Bridge for Cat5 and they'll tell you
07:13:50 PMGarbee SovereignEntity, Not unless you are using an Intel driver and they build it into that it seems.
07:13:51 PMagamotto heheeh
07:13:59 PMpyrosrock _Jot_ nope cant see it
07:14:03 PMGarbee http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quick_Sync_Video#Linux
07:14:10 PM_Jot_ pyrosrock, I'm sure you'll find it soon
07:14:13 PMagamotto Nice segue...
07:14:24 PMGarbee So, No quick sync on Linux from Ivy Bridge.
07:14:40 PMagamotto OpenGL 4.0???
07:14:49 PMinvincib1emutant I though gaming will require more on gpu instead of cpu
07:15:07 PMGarbee invincib1emutant, Depends on game.
07:15:12 PMRavenLords it works fine for me
07:15:15 PMGarbee Some are CPU intensive, others are GPU intensive.
07:15:25 PMinvincib1emutant GPU renders the graphics right
07:15:29 PMRavenLords nop
07:15:31 PMGuest_5297 use pclinx os
07:15:34 PMpyrosrock hmm my only issue with 12.04 is cyan video on youtube
07:15:35 PMinvincib1emutant my friend has problem with virtualbox
07:15:38 PMOldGuyJim 12.04 working fine including sound.
07:15:40 PMchipsbit not here.....works great
07:15:43 PMagamotto There are minor sound and GRUB issues that I have seen on the forums
07:15:45 PMinvincib1emutant after upgrading to the 12.04
07:15:56 PMT0B331 Nah it's infinity + infinity for me
07:15:59 PMflatslide sound works for me
07:16:13 PMScorpio55 install PAV control and select h/w
07:16:30 PMT0B331 Oh dear my old machine has legacy :(
07:16:46 PMT0B331 so i guess upgrading from 10.04 is pointless :(
07:16:54 PMGoodGuy Run Wary Puppy :-)
07:16:57 PMGarbee forums.ubuntu.com ?
07:17:06 PMagamotto yah
07:17:20 PMScorpio55 Pulse Audio Volume may fix it
07:17:23 PMGarbee http://ubuntuforums.org/
07:17:27 PMGoodGuy a version of Puppy Linux for older machines
07:17:59 PMagamotto T0B331- the only big issue migrating from 10.04 -> 12.04 seems to be GRUB tanking after the installation
07:18:04 PMGoodGuy Racy Puppy is the version for newer hardware
07:18:11 PMpyrosrock _Jot_ still havent found my webcam but i found my brothers portable hd which he had lost 4 6months
07:18:16 PM_Jot_ EricKidd, it'll run about as fast as you
07:18:31 PMScorpio55 is it selecting digitial s/pdif
07:18:43 PMEricKidd _jot_ made me laugh!
07:18:45 PMGuest_4636 I installed ubuntu 12.04 on a 2005 dual-core 64 bit computer and it works fine
07:18:51 PMScorpio55 install PAVU from s/w cemter
07:18:59 PMGoodGuy I wish I could get a friend of mine to listen to your thoughts on wireless
07:19:01 PM_Jot_ yay! My job is complete
07:19:05 PMagamotto It might also be good to check and see if Master Front is not muted in the volume control panel
07:19:07 PMinvincib1emutant RobbieF: bring up cat5.tv to test your sound
07:19:42 PMagamotto muted/not muted, that should have been
07:19:46 PMT0B331 Yeah i will do it in 2013 when the last LTS is totally finished since this PC is running okay for now. Thanks for the tip RobbieF :)
07:20:17 PMchrisreich check the stupid stuff first
07:20:25 PMagamotto T0B331- 12.04 IS the LTS
07:20:25 PMScorpio55 12.04 selects digital s/pdif instead of analogue
07:20:38 PMOldGuyJim Skype doesn't work in 64-bit.
07:20:53 PMDennis_Kelley Do we have to Drink now chrisreich
07:20:58 PMchipsbit that was scary
07:20:58 PMRavenLords yes i use 64 bit
07:20:59 PM_Jot_ RobbieF, stop spying on me and remembering everything I did!
07:21:00 PMScorpio55 install pavu to fix audio
07:21:12 PMOldGuyJim 52 is a loooonnnnggg time ago.
07:21:47 PMajamison5579 Robbief you make his doctor sound like William Shatner
07:21:48 PMT0B331 Want to give 12.04 time to become 100% stable before upgrading i've done D.I.Y to 11.10 when it came out and the outcome was not smooth want to give it a year for silly issues like this to come to light so 100% fixes come out that dont cause more issues than it solves
07:21:57 PMchrisreich True story - I was once sent to Africa for two weeks to fix a problem that turned out to be one wire connected to the screw next to the screw it should have been connected to. I was finished before lunch on the first day.
07:22:02 PMinvincib1emutant 12.04 gnome3 is pretty cool
07:22:05 PMinvincib1emutant much stable
07:22:06 PMagamotto T0B331- Nothing wrong with that
07:22:10 PMT0B331 running it on netbook and no issues like that
07:22:11 PMGuest_5297 my name is Jim and i'm 62 yrs old
07:22:32 PMinvincib1emutant try it out
07:22:33 PMagamotto chrisreich- Wow, talk about mileage bonus
07:22:33 PMT0B331 Yeah agamotto i worry about this ol machine lol
07:22:37 PMT0B331 old**
07:23:10 PMOldGuyJim Are you OK???
07:23:23 PMagamotto Old is relative... in Okinawan society, you aren't considered an adult until you reach 55.
07:23:23 PMchrisreich that's why I always start troubleshooting with the stupid stuff first.
07:23:52 PMGoodGuy Darn I would still have to grow up
07:24:07 PMpyrosrock middle click RobbieF
07:24:08 PMmaxwell6307 go with mint :)
07:24:14 PMOldDudeGarbee EricKidd, How 'bout dem good ole days?
07:24:16 PMinvincib1emutant Ctrl+Alt+c to copy in terminal
07:24:22 PMGoodGuy Ctrl_Shift+V
07:24:49 PMinvincib1emutant RobbieF: That is what we call the globalmenu
07:25:03 PMchipsbit streamline
07:25:23 PMagamotto I thought that was the whole point of the virtual GUI
07:25:27 PMGuest_4636 old school gnome 2 user and loving unity
07:25:28 PMagamotto 'screens'
07:25:36 PMOldGuyJim Maybe I'm tooooo old to change.
07:25:39 PMGuest_5297 kde works just fine on pclinux os
07:25:46 PMagamotto Enabling you to flip back and forth
07:26:07 PMchrisreich that's the baby duckling syndrome - what one sees first is always preferred.
07:26:16 PMinvincib1emutant OldGuyJim, you can use gnome or gnome3/gnome-shell
07:26:18 PMinvincib1emutant i am using it
07:26:22 PMinvincib1emutant pretty stable now
07:26:24 PMagamotto Change is fine when it actually improves something. Change just to change is a waste of resources.
07:26:31 PMDennis_Kelley I still have not changed my 10.10
07:26:39 PMDennis_Kelley I know I need to do something!
07:26:46 PMinvincib1emutant gnome-shell performs better than unity
07:27:05 PMchrisreich but the best way to learn something is to teach it, RobbieF.
07:27:07 PMinvincib1emutant gnome-shell is lighter on my laptop
07:27:09 PM_Jot_ RobbieF, so you're saying you're getting old?
07:27:24 PMOldDudeGarbee For me there is no real performance difference.
07:27:31 PMT0B331 I use 2d on netbook
07:27:41 PMinvincib1emutant RobbieF: true...my graphics is just interl X3100
07:27:55 PMpyrosrock i wish it used more graphics
07:28:24 PMOldDudeGarbee Robbie and {Eric, Rachel, Christy, Hillary, Erika}
07:28:25 PM_Jot_ EricKidd, everbody knows who you are, but who's that Robbie guy people keep talking about?
07:28:31 PMagamotto "Dear whomever is guest-hosting when this is read..'
07:28:47 PMinvincib1emutant RobbieF: But how can i know when are you goign to read out the question?
07:29:06 PMpyrosrock yeah but RobbieF everytime i send a email it takes 3 weeks or so to get on air
07:29:44 PMinvincib1emutant RobbieF: Can we expect you to read out the question right this coming episode?
07:29:50 PMOldGuyJim RobbieF can't win tonight.....
07:29:57 PMajamison5579 Just start all messages with "Hey Robbie and [insert the name of co-host here]"
07:30:41 PMchipsbit he's trashing Eric
07:31:42 PMchrisreich RobbieF - a suggestion. Perhaps at the end of each show you could tease us with a reading of a few of the viewer questions you will tackle on the following show.
07:32:02 PMpyrosrock RobbieF everyone is currently piggiebacking of the us system atm
07:32:02 PMagamotto They are also doing it to create their own GPS-guidance network for their airlines
07:32:15 PMRavenLords thepiratebay is the BEST web stie to get Movies and pc game for free i use it all the time
07:32:37 PMT0B331 I banned that on my router a year ago! Evil evil site!
07:32:46 PMRavenLords no
07:32:56 PMOldDudeGarbee I'm on a boat.
07:33:25 PMagamotto I am currently on my back porch :)
07:33:41 PMOldDudeGarbee chrisreich, He doesn't know a week ahead. He gathers the question list for the shows before each show.
07:34:33 PMOldDudeGarbee Python
07:34:39 PMOldDudeGarbee Knowing Google.
07:34:41 PMOldGuyJim That car is great. It goes on vacation and leaves you home.
07:34:54 PMchrisreich They were just discussing that there was such a backlog that one could not predict when a given question would be addressed.
07:35:03 PMGarbee Or elderly like EricKidd. ;)
07:35:08 PMagamotto It could be great for the low-vision community
07:35:44 PMagamotto It would also help the elderly retain their independence
07:35:48 PM_Jot_ RobbieF, so there is still hope for you driving! good show
07:35:51 PMagamotto 'Johnny-cabs'
07:35:53 PMRavenLords yes it whuts
07:35:57 PMOldGuyJim Yes...Total Recall.
07:36:35 PMGarbee RavenLords, Please don't tell people about warez sites and what you do with them.
07:36:36 PMpyrosrock Garbee my mum who is legaly blind did a track day at a race cource... very interesting
07:36:41 PMagamotto Managed to see The Avengers today... good movie
07:37:51 PMagamotto Awww.... Meow died. Poor moggy
07:37:58 PMOldGuyJim I love it...another comedy team.
07:38:11 PMpyrosrock id think that it shuld mount it automaticaly
07:38:46 PMchipsbit comedy team.......who's on first???
07:39:12 PM_Jot_ who's on second, watts on first
07:39:24 PMchipsbit what's on second
07:39:28 PMagamotto Heyyyyyyy, Aaaaaaaboootttttt!!!!!!!
07:39:33 PMchipsbit lol
07:39:40 PMOldGuyJim I don't know is on third.
07:39:56 PMchipsbit are we talking about him??
07:40:11 PMinvincib1emutant RobbieF: why not put in /home
07:40:34 PMGarbee invincib1emutant, You can't mount things inside of /home through fstab.
07:40:39 PMinvincib1emutant RobbieF: I thought everything belongs to a user should go to the user home folder
07:40:51 PMagamotto Yes, but you can't mount there
07:40:52 PMpyrosrock i let my com auto mount hds in linux
07:41:03 PMinvincib1emutant ic...
07:41:13 PMGarbee You mount then symlink to make it appear as if it is in /home/$user/
07:41:21 PMinvincib1emutant you can indeed you user mount for your own use
07:41:35 PMagamotto It should go to /var or /dev, based on what it is
07:41:54 PMGarbee invincib1emutant, What can you do? I got lost with that one.
07:42:18 PMinvincib1emutant i have sdb1 in my home mounted to my external hard drive
07:42:33 PMGarbee Most likely not.
07:42:37 PMagamotto hmmmm
07:42:48 PMinvincib1emutant i am having it on one of my machine here
07:42:49 PMGarbee It is most likely /dev/sdb1 and something (a symlink) is pointing to /dev/sdb1.
07:42:59 PMGarbee er. /media/sdb1
07:43:04 PMGarbee not /dev
07:43:24 PMinvincib1emutant /dev/sdb1 on /home/ngkengyap/sdb1 type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro,user_xattr,commit=0)
07:43:50 PMinvincib1emutant this is an example
07:43:52 PMGarbee invincib1emutant, Where are you getting that from? It shouldn't be possible unless you manually create the point.
07:44:14 PMGarbee fstab will NOT mount a drive inside of a users home folder.
07:44:14 PMinvincib1emutant i created the sdb1 in my home
07:44:24 PMinvincib1emutant that is taken from the mount output
07:44:26 PMagamotto hmmm
07:44:48 PMGarbee Ok, so you created it manually. The way Robbie is showing it will automount on startup.
07:45:21 PMinvincib1emutant i have that in my fstab too
07:45:28 PMGoodGuy video lc
07:45:34 PMagamotto RobbieF- and lowercase v
07:45:34 PMGarbee Well, it *shouldn't* work.
07:45:47 PMGarbee It is capital.
07:45:51 PMinvincib1emutant the thing is it is working
07:46:21 PMOldGuyJim Listening to RobbieF..he sounds like he is in 7th Heaven.
07:46:25 PMGarbee invincib1emutant, So I'd say something is broken. fstab *shouldn't* be able to mount inside of a users home folder. I tried for a wiki article I wrote and it kept failing.
07:46:28 PMGoodGuy blkid
07:46:42 PMGarbee I found out fstab *shouldn't* mount something inside of a /home folder.
07:46:44 PMMrLuluApples su; nano /etc/fstab
07:47:23 PMinvincib1emutant this is the kernel version 3.0.0-19-generic
07:47:51 PMGarbee invincib1emutant, Kernel version won't matter. a few other pieces of software do though, souch as fstab itself.
07:47:51 PMMrLuluApples Can't wait til tomorrow to see what I missed.
07:48:01 PMGarbee I will retest in 12.04 and see if anything changed.
07:48:08 PMinvincib1emutant Garbee: this is interesting
07:48:13 PMMrLuluApples What about squeeze?
07:48:46 PMGuest_5297 gimp iis in the repository of pclinuxos
07:48:48 PMMrLuluApples I'll build a .deb package
07:49:02 PMGarbee Guest_5297, But is it the most up-to-date? 2.8 specifically.
07:49:07 PMinvincib1emutant Garbee: a few weeks ago, i did another mount of NFS in the home folder as well
07:49:10 PMinvincib1emutant on 11.04
07:49:10 PMGoodGuy version 2.8 Guest_5297
07:49:12 PMGarbee It is also in the Ubuntu repo, but an older version currently.
07:49:12 PMGoodGuy ?
07:49:12 PMMrLuluApples Annoying but not hard.
07:49:14 PMGuest_5297 yes
07:49:24 PMGoodGuy neat
07:49:28 PMGarbee Then they are on top of things.
07:49:35 PMGoodGuy PCLinuxOS is right up to speed
07:49:42 PMGuest_5297 yep
07:49:50 PMinvincib1emutant nothing fancy, just add an entry in the fstab, it just worked
07:50:05 PMGuest_5297 i use ht kde vir
07:50:09 PMGoodGuy Texstar had to quit, so I wondered how updates would be done
07:50:29 PMinvincib1emutant RobbieF: This is therefore not support by ubuntu itself
07:50:40 PMinvincib1emutant supported
07:51:01 PMGuest_5297 PCLinux is rpm
07:51:14 PMGoodGuy You can install Synaptic in 12.04
07:51:24 PMchipsbit install synaptic manager.....it's there
07:51:25 PMinvincib1emutant Hi guys, i found that voyager linux is well decorated
07:51:37 PMinvincib1emutant anyone here has experience with it
07:51:50 PMGuest_5297 no
07:51:55 PMinvincib1emutant since it is not popular, i was reluctant to try
07:52:17 PM_Jot_ Robbie is working out of the box, in other words, he has no idea what he is doing or what is going on
07:52:40 PMMrLuluApples LoL
07:53:03 PMinvincib1emutant Cool splash screen
07:53:24 PM_Jot_ EricKidd, you're old enough to know what you're doing, just do whatever you want
07:53:28 PMOldGuyJim I just checked...it looks available for windows.
07:53:33 PMGarbee There is a Windows binary out.
07:53:40 PMGoodGuy or Photoshop if you are Christa
07:53:41 PMGarbee http://www.gimp.org/downloads/
07:53:53 PMGarbee The GIMP team won't make binaries anymore though.
07:54:22 PMpyrosrock nice RobbieF
07:54:31 PMGarbee Single window mode!
07:54:37 PMGarbee My fav feature.
07:54:56 PMGarbee I just think one window mode is neater.
07:55:07 PMGarbee It was, you just had to follow the link.
07:56:15 PMGarbee Full GEGL support in the next GIMP.
07:56:23 PMGarbee In 5 years...
07:56:26 PMagamotto GEGL?
07:56:42 PMGarbee I think it is an image rendering engine.
07:56:55 PMagamotto ahh
07:56:56 PMGarbee http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GEGL
07:57:34 PMGarbee RobbieF, You need to enable GEGL under the "View" menu.
07:57:40 PMagamotto Does it have 'reality-filters,' like Fox News?
07:57:47 PMGarbee and it is only partially supported in 2.8.
07:57:53 PMGarbee Will be fully supported in 2.10.
07:58:32 PMT0B331 That is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
07:58:52 PMinvincib1emutant Garbee: it works again, mounted an nfs drive to my home
07:59:01 PMGarbee 2.8 is a much anticipated release after being 2 years late.
07:59:15 PMScorpio55 There's a nice GIMP lens for the Unity dash that searches for loads of extras
07:59:18 PMagamotto tin-type?
07:59:23 PMinvincib1emutant Garbee: i created a folder in my home...
07:59:23 PMDennis_Kelley Showing us the GIMP, i did not think it was that kind of show!
07:59:24 PMGarbee invincib1emutant, Did you do it through fstab?
07:59:30 PMinvincib1emutant Garbee: yes
07:59:39 PMGarbee invincib1emutant, I don't need a rundown of how you did it.
07:59:50 PMinvincib1emutant and then run sudo mount -a
07:59:52 PMinvincib1emutant that is it
07:59:54 PMOldGuyJim Late or not, I'm just grateful for all that the people have put into it.
08:00:04 PMagamotto no kidding
08:00:17 PMinvincib1emutant Garbee: this is another machine running 12.04
08:00:20 PMGarbee Yea, Grouping layers. Sweet.
08:00:41 PMGarbee invincib1emutant, Perhaps an update has come out since 10.04 that allows it then. I will be doing some testing. Thanks for the info.
08:01:15 PMMrLuluApples Invinciblemutant is that new directory a tmpfs or /dev/shm directory?
08:01:21 PMinvincib1emutant Garbee: perhaps, i know that a mounted drive cannot be used as a user home, that is true
08:01:26 PMOldGuyJim Thank you RobbieF and super co-host Erik
08:01:37 PMT0B331 Happy Birthday EricKidd :)
08:01:43 PMGarbee invincib1emutant, actually, that can be fuged to be made to work.
08:01:46 PMDennis_Kelley Thanks EricKidd and Main Host!
08:01:48 PMGarbee By default no though.
08:02:01 PMRobbieF thanks everyone!
08:02:01 PMinvincib1emutant Garbee: how?
08:02:12 PMinvincib1emutant RobbieF: well done
08:02:17 PMGoodGuy Except Ms Wells
08:02:31 PMMrLuluApples Invinciblemutant, on my desktop I have the system on one hard drive and /home on the other.
08:02:44 PMGarbee invincib1emutant, Look at how Novell does it. They had some kind of thing for it a while back, commercial though and only for businesses. I don't know if they have changed their config since though.
08:02:50 PMMrLuluApples It can be done, just change where home mounts to the other mounted drive.
08:02:59 PMGarbee It was a few years ago last I checked on their stuff.
08:03:08 PMpyrosrock same here MrLuluApples plus another 3 hds
08:03:11 PMGoodGuy I installed Ubuntu 11.10 along side 10.04 LTS on my wifes older PC
08:03:16 PMinvincib1emutant MrLuluApples: yea, indeeed, i am wrong..that is common
08:03:24 PMEricKidd Thanks everyone!
08:03:32 PMT0B331 Great show!! :D
08:03:35 PMMrLuluApples There are only like 4 directories you can't remount: /proc /dev and I think /sys and /etc...
08:03:37 PMDennis_Kelley beer time!
08:03:40 PMGoodGuy She loves 10.04, but said 11.10 was too slow and asked me to uninstall it
08:03:57 PMMrLuluApples By remounrt I mean mount elsewhere.
08:03:59 PMDennis_Kelley No opener! NOOOOO!!
08:04:09 PMagamotto Whenever I move to 12.04 or Mint, I will be doing a clean install
08:04:12 PMGoodGuy It is odd.... 11.10 had to be installed by alternate installer
08:04:23 PMinvincib1emutant hi fork, how to check for ubuntu version from command line?
08:04:27 PMMrLuluApples pyro, raid 10 and LVM for the win!
08:04:34 PMGoodGuy I tried regular as well as Linux Mint and they both failed
08:04:46 PMT0B331 Hey guys i have to fly now i need to do a few things :) beback on in about an hour
08:04:48 PMMrLuluApples You runnin' XFS on GTP?
08:04:50 PMagamotto I was never able to get any 11.x version to install on my systems
08:04:54 PMMrLuluApples FAST!
08:05:10 PMGoodGuy Wonder why agamotto
08:05:10 PMDennis_Kelley lsb-release
08:05:12 PMpyrosrock MrLuluApples nah i have win on one games on another and movies on another
08:05:50 PMagamotto GoodGuy- nVidia problems, and with 11.10 the installer kept choking on my need to dual-boot
08:06:23 PMpyrosrock agamotto i had simmilar issues... 11.04 installed but never ran properly
08:06:27 PMMrLuluApples Its always better to spread it out though. This system is a laptop and I only hove three partitions because I have a /boot and a bios partition. The main partition is encrypted but I have it split up through LVM.
08:06:42 PMGoodGuy lsb_release -r
08:07:00 PMDennis_Kelley Thanks GoodGuy!
08:07:13 PMGoodGuy That is it... my wifes PC has an old nVidia card
08:07:47 PMinvincib1emutant Dennis_Kelley: lsb_release -r
08:07:49 PMGoodGuy welcome, but thank whoever wrote lsb-release earlier.... I googled that to see the exact syntax
08:07:52 PMinvincib1emutant that gives 14
08:07:55 PMinvincib1emutant what does it mean
08:07:55 PMpyrosrock RobbieF does ubuntu support virtual RAID?
08:07:55 PMagamotto Now that they are cheaper, I think I may move my Mythbuntu systems to 2xx or 4xx series cards sometime this summer.
08:08:32 PMGoodGuy says this on PinguyOS (Ubuntu fork) Release: 11.04
08:08:45 PMMrLuluApples agamotto, I am doing a mythbox too. I gotta install an antenna though.
08:08:51 PMGarbee Night everyone.
08:08:58 PMpyrosrock agamotto the 4xx series cards have massive bugs in them... go 5xx or go 2xx
08:09:03 PMagamotto MrLuluApples- OTA should be a doddle
08:09:25 PMGoodGuy OTA is just behind Blu-Ray
08:09:33 PMinvincib1emutant Dennis_Kelley: Sorry, got 14 on fedora...:P
08:09:34 PMpyrosrock agamotto the 5xx cards are the same as 4xx but without the bugs basicaly
08:09:39 PMGoodGuy uncompressed compared to cable
08:09:39 PMinvincib1emutant Dennis_Kelley: my mistake
08:09:49 PMagamotto pyrosrock- probably 2xx then... just to be able to use VDPAU... my 7xxx series cards are not quite good enough for that
08:09:51 PMMrLuluApples I'm really considering a beagle board for mine.
08:10:11 PMRobbieF Yes pyrosrock - you can open Disk Utility and go File -> Create new RAID
08:10:14 PMRobbieF or something like that :)
08:10:23 PMGoodGuy We still have an antenna on our roof. OTA looks terrific
08:10:36 PMpyrosrock agamotto yeah tell me about it i have a 6200 in my old com
08:10:42 PMGoodGuy I switch to that to watch major sporting events
08:10:48 PMMrLuluApples a MythBeagleboard. All external peripherals and hard drive on a USB hub.
08:10:59 PMinvincib1emutant everyone here should try irssi
08:11:08 PMinvincib1emutant what a irc client
08:11:10 PMpyrosrock agamotto and a 560 in my new one... had a 240 4 a while good card for the price
08:11:11 PMGoodGuy IRC client, isnt it?
08:11:13 PMagamotto I cut the cable cord myself earlier. With working, and Mediacom not being helpful about the QAM mapping, it was easy to quit paying them US$70/month
08:11:19 PMinvincib1emutant loving it
08:11:41 PMinvincib1emutant quick, clean and easy
08:11:58 PMGoodGuy I use XChat.... Prefer mIRC just because I used it for ages
08:12:05 PMpyrosrock RobbieF anny massive downsides to virtual raid over physical on board raid?
08:12:28 PMinvincib1emutant tab works to autocomplete things here in irsii
08:12:31 PMinvincib1emutant irssi
08:12:38 PMGoodGuy I ran mIRC under CrossOver in the past, but it still had a few screen redraw issues
08:12:45 PMagamotto I just saw this week in Consumer Reports magazine that Mediacom comes in near dead-last in cable/net/VoIP service
08:12:53 PMinvincib1emutant i just type Ga, then tab, it complete it as Garbee
08:12:54 PMGoodGuy It does that in almost any IRC client
08:13:08 PMagamotto Perhaps I can help get Moline to cancel their franchise license
08:13:12 PMMrLuluApples pyrosock, not really, in fact software raid is a bit better because you don't have to worry about losing your array to a dead controller.
08:13:31 PMGoodGuy If you press Tab again, it will find the next userid with that same prefix
08:13:38 PMinvincib1emutant Ro + tab --> RobbieF:
08:13:42 PMinvincib1emutant cool stuff
08:13:49 PMpyrosrock MrLuluApples so how do u get it back if the os dies?
08:14:39 PMinvincib1emutant ok guys, good night, it is 1.14am here
08:14:46 PMinvincib1emutant thanks RobbieF
08:14:50 PMinvincib1emutant and EricKidd
08:15:02 PMMrLuluApples generally, you recreate the array without erasing data when you reinstall.
08:15:03 PMinvincib1emutant have a nice week ahead
08:15:06 PMpyrosrock invincib1emutant, i wish that was the time and not early morning
08:15:10 PMagamotto enjoy yourself
08:15:35 PMinvincib1emutant pyrosrock: :)
08:15:36 PM_Jot_ RobbieF, gravity has failed, you appear upside down on the BSP
08:15:39 PMagamotto 0114 isn't considered early by you?
08:15:42 PMDennis_Kelley RobbieF - you are all flipped!
08:15:48 PMinvincib1emutant RobbieF: EricKidd upside down
08:16:19 PMDennis_Kelley I can see more with that view!!
08:16:20 PMinvincib1emutant bye
08:16:49 PMpyrosrock RobbieF is testing to see if annyone is paying atention to the BSP
08:16:57 PMRobbieF ha
08:17:02 PMRobbieF no, if I was doing that, I'd do this....
08:17:07 PMagamotto I am not... I am fetching some updates while chatting
08:17:28 PMMrLuluApples Robbie, don't be so negative!
08:17:38 PMpyrosrock oh thanks RobbieF the clarity
08:17:42 PM_Jot_ wow, EricKidd is on fire
08:17:44 PMDennis_Kelley EricKidd is Hot tonight!
08:17:53 PMMrLuluApples Neat!
08:18:08 PMGoodGuy This also displays Ubuntu Version
08:18:10 PMGoodGuy cat /etc/issue
08:18:12 PMpyrosrock RobbieF u need to do that during the show
08:18:14 PMEricKidd When ur hot ur hot!
08:18:24 PM_Jot_ Software can't give you hair RobbieF
08:18:33 PM_Jot_ Seriously, it completely failed
08:18:38 PMDennis_Kelley Cute
08:18:38 PMagamotto GoodGuy- Send it in as a viewer tip
08:19:01 PMGoodGuy I saw it here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=796627
08:19:05 PMagamotto On that note, I must away. I have to be at work around 0700 tomorrow.
08:19:11 PMpyrosrock RobbieF liks to be able to make out with himself
08:19:13 PMGoodGuy night agamotto
08:19:20 PMagamotto I need to get some laundry dried and folded before I turn in.
08:19:23 PMRobbieF night agamotto
08:19:37 PMMrLuluApples Goodguy, what does " dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda do?
08:20:09 PMGoodGuy Copies a random pattern to "zero" out a hard drive
08:20:22 PMMrLuluApples darn, he knew...
08:20:24 PMGoodGuy Yes I have one.... that was the joke...
08:20:25 PMMrLuluApples :)
08:21:15 PMDennis_Kelley Nice smile RobbieF
08:21:34 PMMrLuluApples dev/zero is faster, but not as clean
08:21:45 PMGoodGuy Years ago when I started in programming mainframes, I used to kid a coworker to grab an assembler manual and quiz me on opcodes
08:22:33 PMGoodGuy They use a random pattern because zeros arent as effective in obscuring the prior data
08:22:43 PM_Jot_ GoodGuy, you cheated with that manual, all the pages were marked!
08:23:02 PMGoodGuy It was his manual
08:23:34 PMMrLuluApples Hey, did anyone see the news on Slashdot? Apparently Ubuntu is shipping on 5% of all new pc's worldwide. Considering that OSX I'd say that is pretty signifigant.
08:23:46 PM_Jot_ GoodGuy that is why it was cheating, you left your manual pristine and marked his
08:24:04 PMMrLuluApples OSX is shipping on 6%
08:24:39 PMGoodGuy I have hundreds of books in this junkpit called home and most of my books look pristine
08:24:52 PM_Jot_ I'd be more impressed if it was used on all new pc's instead of shipping, many people will be installing windows as soon as they get it
08:25:00 PMGoodGuy some because I never touched them after buying them lol
08:25:04 PMMrLuluApples GoodGuy is linux your primary OS?
08:25:33 PMGoodGuy No... I use WinXP just because I bought a ton of shareware
08:25:58 PM_Jot_ EricKidd, by the way, I send in a viewer-testimonial, you may want to read it
08:26:05 PMGoodGuy I play in PinguyOS (Ubuntu based)
08:26:44 PMGoodGuy then I have a 2nd set of partitions I install various linux flavors just to try out
08:27:13 PMGoodGuy I had PCLinuxOS 2012 installed until Ubuntu 12.04 came out
08:27:42 PMGoodGuy I backup it up using a program called Terabyte's Imaging products
08:28:13 PMGoodGuy CloneZilla would do the job also.. just didnt know about it when I started
08:28:54 PMGoodGuy Then I use VirtualBox to try out other distros to see the install prompts
08:29:14 PMMrLuluApples No hard drive of mine has been soiled by windows since 2005. I was pretty much a windows part timer from 1999 to 2005. I only run debian since 05 and ran it most of the time from 99 to 05.
08:29:22 PMGoodGuy Thanks to RobbieF 's earlier episode teaching us how to use VBox
08:29:52 PMGoodGuy Funny part is my wifes PC has two WinXP SP3 installs
08:29:55 PMMrLuluApples That is HUGE Robbie!
08:30:06 PMGoodGuy Both run lousy and the newer one freezes
08:30:22 PMMrLuluApples two?
08:30:37 PMGoodGuy I got her to try Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and now she doesn't want WinXP back
08:30:42 PMMrLuluApples Oh, on vbox.
08:31:17 PMGoodGuy Older one was my cluttered install.. I gave her a fresh install when she inherited the older PC
08:31:34 PMGoodGuy No two real installs od WinXP
08:32:00 PMGoodGuy I bought a new PC a few years ago and she used it for ages
08:32:27 PMGoodGuy Then she got annoyed I spent the money and never used it myself lol
08:32:51 PMGoodGuy alot of work moving junk from an old PC to a new one
08:33:36 PMGoodGuy But cant upset the wifey too much and expect her to agree to the next tech goodies
08:34:18 PMDJHotWheels Robbie and Eric I sent a PM. I will wait till u can answer.:)
08:34:20 PMGoodGuy so I switched to this PC and she took the old AMD 1.4 Ghz T-Bird dinosaur
08:35:38 PMDennis_Kelley I like dinosaurs! Old computers are fun!
08:35:47 PMGoodGuy Category 5 TV imparted knowledge converted Mrs GoodGuy to Ubuntu
08:36:13 PMMrLuluApples All my junk is on an external hard drive. I have a nice little rsync script that cron calls every hour.
08:36:24 PMGoodGuy She was thinking she needed Office and I installed LibreOffice
08:36:46 PMGoodGuy Told her to try it and if she isnt happy I'll install Office in Crossover
08:37:09 PMGoodGuy she never asked, so LibreOffice did the job
08:37:23 PMMrLuluApples I can back up my whole hard drive in about 20 minutes with rsync, my wifes newer, faster system took more than a day and a half to get to 50% with windows backup.
08:37:40 PMGoodGuy Do you leave the external drive powered on constantly?
08:37:50 PMGoodGuy I feared overheating
08:37:57 PMMrLuluApples Over night
08:38:23 PMGoodGuy I bought a new external bay when Newegg had it on sale
08:38:37 PMGoodGuy That has a cooling fan in it
08:38:38 PMMrLuluApples I create restore points on my systems hard disk too so if it isnt connected I get a restore point/
08:39:02 PMMrLuluApples My system spins it down though
08:39:12 PMGoodGuy but the two I use now dont and I am afraid it might overheat drives and shorten their life
08:40:03 PMDennis_Kelley That is what I do not like about my Pogoplug with external hard drives running.
08:40:15 PMGoodGuy I can create Differential backups with Image for Window-DOS-Linux
08:40:19 PMDennis_Kelley but it is better than a full server running
08:40:36 PM_Jot_ you could always get one of those usb-fans and use that to cool the drives
08:41:05 PMGoodGuy I also use a windows program called GoodSync to keep synced folders up to daye every so often
08:41:45 PM_Jot_ GoodGuy, because RobbieF told you it's a good product :)
08:42:02 PMGoodGuy I am pretty much homebound, so remote access isnt a need
08:42:08 PMGoodGuy Probably lol
08:42:27 PM_Jot_ it can still be useful if you want to give others access to something without letting them on your computer
08:42:35 PMDennis_Kelley well send it to me. i will give you off site backup!
08:42:43 PMGoodGuy I was going to have our son backup key files on our system
08:43:12 PMGoodGuy But my wife declared we were buying the son an external hard drive
08:43:40 PMGoodGuy The way she worded it, I knew just go hard drive shopping :-)
08:45:00 PMDennis_Kelley Beer Two in the Cat5 Studio
08:46:32 PMGoodGuy I would like to convery my Pogoplug to run Linux and use it as a poor mans low power NAS gadget
08:46:44 PMGoodGuy convert
08:47:00 PMMrLuluApples Of course I don't have a whole lot worth backing up.
08:47:01 PMDennis_Kelley Me too GoodGuy
08:47:18 PMGoodGuy They have a fair amt of docs on the Pogoplug site, but hard to tell what is outdated
08:47:29 PMDennis_Kelley have not got around to trying
08:47:56 PMGoodGuy It seemed to get much harder after a Pogoplug software update
08:48:34 PMDennis_Kelley RobbieF - Speaking of Pogoplugs any luck with the issue we were having?
08:48:40 PMGoodGuy I believe they have to use some ARM version and it wasnt easy
08:48:59 PMRobbieF problem?
08:49:03 PMRobbieF what issue?
08:49:36 PM_Jot_ RobbieF is currently time-travelling to the future to attempt creating episodes about many things
08:50:06 PMDennis_Kelley i got a replacement from them, because the first one stopped working. never sent it back
08:50:30 PMGoodGuy Pogoplug is pretty popular here, so any additional use is a bonus
08:50:56 PMGoodGuy They didnt get your charge card number?
08:51:03 PMDennis_Kelley No
08:51:16 PM_Jot_ if you're good with hardware and such, you might be able to get a jtag cable in there and see if it really doesn't work anymore
08:51:36 PMDennis_Kelley what is a jtag cable
08:51:43 PMGoodGuy Strange.. most places do that and charge it if you dont mail back the old after a time
08:52:02 PMDennis_Kelley i bought it at bestbuy
08:52:06 PMGoodGuy a serial cable to access a console function iirc
08:52:07 PM_Jot_ a jtag cable is a special cable that you connect to a device to debug it
08:52:21 PMDennis_Kelley I will look into that!
08:52:44 PMGoodGuy They use them in unbricking routers being hacked
08:52:54 PM_Jot_ it may involve soldering an actual connector, and such, so it really is advanced stuff
08:53:22 PMGoodGuy at least I see the term mentioned there
08:53:24 PMDennis_Kelley i can solder with my eyes closed
08:53:38 PMGoodGuy But can you do it right :-)
08:53:48 PM_Jot_ often in early versions of devices, they still have everything and you only need a cable, in later versions they often remove the connector but leave the connections on the circuitboard, and in even later versions they often leave the jtag out completely
08:54:17 PMGoodGuy Newest isnt always the best
08:54:39 PMDennis_Kelley for sure! i used to do surface mount soldering by hand. i would take out my contacts, put on safety glasses and solder each leg one at a time!
08:55:17 PM_Jot_ I can't remember if the jtag is still on the pogoplug etc, but I am sure google knows :)
08:55:33 PMDennis_Kelley the all mighty google!
08:55:44 PMGoodGuy Neat Dennis_Kelley
08:56:08 PM_Jot_ and if you have two that do have the same boards, and the broken one still works partially, you might be able to resurrect it with the software of the other
08:56:19 PMGoodGuy I had enough hassles trying to solder slot car stuff back in the day
08:56:25 PMDennis_Kelley No need for microscope to solder
08:56:51 PMDennis_Kelley of course you have to have the right equipment to solder the correct way!
08:56:51 PMGoodGuy and that isnt fine work like circit boards
08:57:22 PM_Jot_ I never learned proper soldering and such, but since there's lots of videos online, I'm sure I'd manage if I had to now :)
08:58:12 PMDennis_Kelley that is one skill every computer/electronic nerd should master
08:58:20 PMGoodGuy Guy laid me off and kept the people who were stealing from him
08:58:40 PMGoodGuy It made little sense at the time
08:59:22 PMGoodGuy Years later I met him and he said he did it because he thought I wouldnt return to school if I got to work doing that
08:59:53 PMGoodGuy I thanked him since I did go back and finished college later
09:00:33 PM_Jot_ yeah, going to school is sensible, I didn't finish school and now I watch people on the internet drinking beer instead of drinking champagne or something myself
09:00:46 PMGoodGuy Actually I just graduated on time because I wazs double-promoted once and quit a year
09:01:24 PMGoodGuy Life changes the minute you walk out of HS
09:02:11 PMDennis_Kelley i wish that I went to school after High School. I just started working. I am going back for my Degree in the fall.
09:02:23 PMGoodGuy I was kidding around in my first college class and the professor said get serious and work hard or leave a seat for someone else
09:02:35 PMGoodGuy Good job Dennis_Kelley
09:03:18 PMDennis_Kelley Programming or IT security
09:03:36 PMGoodGuy When I graduated he hired me to do some work for one of the companies he owned
09:04:04 PMGoodGuy He took me to lunch in his old Karman Ghia orange car
09:04:19 PMGoodGuy I figured he must not make much lol
09:04:37 PMGoodGuy Later I discovered he was very well off
09:04:58 PMGoodGuy Lived in one of the most expensive cities
09:05:11 PMDennis_Kelley Karman Ghia's were cool! My mom had one when I was a kid
09:05:25 PMGoodGuy and owned a coin store among other computer businesses
09:05:53 PMGoodGuy My first programming job I worked on an insurance contract
09:06:16 PMGoodGuy Got that running so well, I stopped getting any night calls
09:06:39 PMGoodGuy so they moved me to work on some coin account
09:07:07 PMGoodGuy I thought it was basically a demotion since coin places must be small change
09:07:34 PMGoodGuy after I left for another job, I saw the place mentioned on tv news
09:07:57 PMpyrosrock hey RobbieF EricKidd not going anywhere?
09:08:08 PMpyrosrock no my BSP!
09:08:10 PM_Jot_ now they are really going to have a party
09:08:13 PMGoodGuy They were mentioned along with a billion dollar fraud investigation lol
09:08:44 PMGoodGuy guess it wasnt the small change after all
09:09:34 PMGoodGuy Life was so different back in the early days of programming
09:09:57 PMGoodGuy we did the dumbest stuff and no one ever said a word
09:10:15 PMGoodGuy I was into all those karate movies
09:10:39 PMGoodGuy We brought a few kung-fu throwing stars
09:10:56 PMGoodGuy tossed them into boxes of printer paper
09:11:18 PMGoodGuy The operations supervisor was doing it too lol
09:11:27 PMDennis_Kelley sweet
09:11:39 PMGoodGuy You wouldnt last a day acting that immature nowadays
09:12:00 PMpyrosrock iknow its so gay
09:12:09 PMDennis_Kelley well it still happens at some jobs, but it shouldn't
09:12:52 PMGoodGuy We had a guy who used to work a few months and then live on some Greek island drinking wine from those goat skin bottles
09:13:18 PMGoodGuy I saw him, but didnt know him personally
09:14:22 PMGoodGuy We were a service company, so we had numerous programmers by day
09:14:41 PMGoodGuy the operations staff worked every shirt
09:14:44 PMGoodGuy shift
09:15:03 PMGoodGuy Every one was on 24 hr call (programmers)
09:15:36 PMGoodGuy If they couldnt reach the regular programmer, they called another until one answered
09:16:03 PMpyrosrock sounds fun
09:16:27 PMGoodGuy I answered almost all the time, so they decided why not create an afternoon shift programmer on site
09:17:13 PMGoodGuy They said I was so good at debugging and reading core dumps, I could converse on an intelligent level with the normal programmer
09:17:34 PMDennis_Kelley Good Job! took pride in your work!
09:17:40 PMGoodGuy It made sense, but afternoons wasnt the greatest when you have kids
09:17:49 PMGoodGuy brbias
09:17:49 PMDennis_Kelley That is me, I take pride in all I do!
09:18:24 PMT0B33 hey everyone i've got a question related to Lubuntu. It's not on the LTS tree but if i took ubuntu and did sudo apt-get install Lubuntu-desktop would that still carry on updating for 5 years? I know Lubuntu itself wont but i mean the updates provided by canonical that fix security issues and that?
09:20:55 PMpyrosrock yes
09:21:01 PMpyrosrock i do belive so
09:21:13 PMT0B33 Excellent Excellent :) Thanks :D
