07:12:51 PM | Garbee | RavenLords, AMD has officially stated "We no longer compete with Intel.", so I will not use them for a desktop anymore unless it is a specialized system.
07:12:52 PM | agamotto | I like being behind the curve... alot cheaper
07:12:56 PM | chrisreich | Phoronix.com reports Ivy Bridge and Linux play together great, RobbieF
07:13:04 PM | SovereignEntity | Garbee will Ubuntu take advantage of Quick Sync

07:13:26 PM | _Jot_ | pyrosrock, right there *points*
07:13:37 PM | invincib1emutant | RobbieF: I learnt that it performs better and less power consuming
07:13:39 PM | GoodGuy | Buy an Ivy Bridge for Cat5 and they'll tell you
07:13:50 PM | Garbee | SovereignEntity, Not unless you are using an Intel driver and they build it into that it seems.

07:15:07 PM | Garbee | invincib1emutant, Depends on game.
07:15:12 PM | RavenLords | it works fine for me
07:15:15 PM | Garbee | Some are CPU intensive, others are GPU intensive.
07:15:25 PM | invincib1emutant | GPU renders the graphics right

07:17:06 PM | agamotto | yah

07:17:20 PM | Scorpio55 | Pulse Audio Volume may fix it
07:17:23 PM | Garbee | http://ubuntuforums.org/
07:17:27 PM | GoodGuy | a version of Puppy Linux for older machines
07:17:59 PM | agamotto | T0B331- the only big issue migrating from 10.04 -> 12.04 seems to be GRUB tanking after the installation
07:18:04 PM | GoodGuy | Racy Puppy is the version for newer hardware
07:18:11 PM | pyrosrock | _Jot_ still havent found my webcam but i found my brothers portable hd which he had lost 4 6months

07:19:05 PM | agamotto | It might also be good to check and see if Master Front is not muted in the volume control panel

07:19:42 PM | agamotto | muted/not muted, that should have been
07:19:46 PM | T0B331 | Yeah i will do it in 2013 when the last LTS is totally finished since this PC is running okay for now. Thanks for the tip RobbieF :)

07:20:25 PM | agamotto | T0B331- 12.04 IS the LTS

07:21:47 PM | ajamison5579 | Robbief you make his doctor sound like William Shatner
07:21:48 PM | T0B331 | Want to give 12.04 time to become 100% stable before upgrading i've done D.I.Y to 11.10 when it came out and the outcome was not smooth want to give it a year for silly issues like this to come to light so 100% fixes come out that dont cause more issues than it solves
07:21:57 PM | chrisreich | True story - I was once sent to Africa for two weeks to fix a problem that turned out to be one wire connected to the screw next to the screw it should have been connected to. I was finished before lunch on the first day.
07:22:02 PM | invincib1emutant | 12.04 gnome3 is pretty cool

07:23:10 PM | OldGuyJim | Are you OK???
07:23:23 PM | agamotto | Old is relative... in Okinawan society, you aren't considered an adult until you reach 55.
07:23:23 PM | chrisreich | that's why I always start troubleshooting with the stupid stuff first.
07:23:52 PM | GoodGuy | Darn I would still have to grow up

07:26:07 PM | chrisreich | that's the baby duckling syndrome - what one sees first is always preferred.
07:26:16 PM | invincib1emutant | OldGuyJim, you can use gnome or gnome3/gnome-shell
07:26:18 PM | invincib1emutant | i am using it
07:26:22 PM | invincib1emutant | pretty stable now
07:26:24 PM | agamotto | Change is fine when it actually improves something. Change just to change is a waste of resources.
07:26:31 PM | Dennis_Kelley | I still have not changed my 10.10
07:26:39 PM | Dennis_Kelley | I know I need to do something!
07:26:46 PM | invincib1emutant | gnome-shell performs better than unity

07:42:49 PM | Garbee | It is most likely /dev/sdb1 and something (a symlink) is pointing to /dev/sdb1.
07:42:59 PM | Garbee | er. /media/sdb1
07:43:04 PM | Garbee | not /dev
07:43:24 PM | invincib1emutant | /dev/sdb1 on /home/ngkengyap/sdb1 type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro,user_xattr,commit=0)
07:43:50 PM | invincib1emutant | this is an example
07:43:52 PM | Garbee | invincib1emutant, Where are you getting that from? It shouldn't be possible unless you manually create the point.
07:44:14 PM | Garbee | fstab will NOT mount a drive inside of a users home folder.
07:44:14 PM | invincib1emutant | i created the sdb1 in my home
07:44:24 PM | invincib1emutant | that is taken from the mount output
07:44:26 PM | agamotto | hmmm
07:44:48 PM | Garbee | Ok, so you created it manually. The way Robbie is showing it will automount on startup.
07:45:21 PM | invincib1emutant | i have that in my fstab too
07:45:28 PM | GoodGuy | video lc
07:45:34 PM | agamotto | RobbieF- and lowercase v
07:45:34 PM | Garbee | Well, it *shouldn't* work.
07:45:47 PM | Garbee | It is capital.
07:45:51 PM | invincib1emutant | the thing is it is working
07:46:21 PM | OldGuyJim | Listening to RobbieF..he sounds like he is in 7th Heaven.
07:46:25 PM | Garbee | invincib1emutant, So I'd say something is broken. fstab *shouldn't* be able to mount inside of a users home folder. I tried for a wiki article I wrote and it kept failing.
07:46:28 PM | GoodGuy | blkid
07:46:42 PM | Garbee | I found out fstab *shouldn't* mount something inside of a /home folder.
07:46:44 PM | MrLuluApples | su; nano /etc/fstab
07:47:23 PM | invincib1emutant | this is the kernel version 3.0.0-19-generic
07:47:51 PM | Garbee | invincib1emutant, Kernel version won't matter. a few other pieces of software do though, souch as fstab itself.
07:47:51 PM | MrLuluApples | Can't wait til tomorrow to see what I missed.
07:48:01 PM | Garbee | I will retest in 12.04 and see if anything changed.
07:48:08 PM | invincib1emutant | Garbee: this is interesting
07:48:13 PM | MrLuluApples | What about squeeze?
07:48:46 PM | Guest_5297 | gimp iis in the repository of pclinuxos
07:48:48 PM | MrLuluApples | I'll build a .deb package
07:49:02 PM | Garbee | Guest_5297, But is it the most up-to-date? 2.8 specifically.
07:49:07 PM | invincib1emutant | Garbee: a few weeks ago, i did another mount of NFS in the home folder as well
07:49:10 PM | invincib1emutant | on 11.04
07:49:10 PM | GoodGuy | version 2.8 Guest_5297
07:49:12 PM | Garbee | It is also in the Ubuntu repo, but an older version currently.
07:49:12 PM | GoodGuy | ?
07:49:12 PM | MrLuluApples | Annoying but not hard.
07:49:14 PM | Guest_5297 | yes
07:49:24 PM | GoodGuy | neat
07:49:28 PM | Garbee | Then they are on top of things.
07:49:35 PM | GoodGuy | PCLinuxOS is right up to speed
07:49:42 PM | Guest_5297 | yep
07:49:50 PM | invincib1emutant | nothing fancy, just add an entry in the fstab, it just worked
07:50:05 PM | Guest_5297 | i use ht kde vir
07:50:09 PM | GoodGuy | Texstar had to quit, so I wondered how updates would be done
07:50:29 PM | invincib1emutant | RobbieF: This is therefore not support by ubuntu itself
07:50:40 PM | invincib1emutant | supported
07:51:01 PM | Guest_5297 | PCLinux is rpm
07:51:14 PM | GoodGuy | You can install Synaptic in 12.04
07:51:24 PM | chipsbit | install synaptic manager.....it's there
07:51:25 PM | invincib1emutant | Hi guys, i found that voyager linux is well decorated
07:51:37 PM | invincib1emutant | anyone here has experience with it
07:51:50 PM | Guest_5297 | no
07:51:55 PM | invincib1emutant | since it is not popular, i was reluctant to try
07:52:17 PM | _Jot_ | Robbie is working out of the box, in other words, he has no idea what he is doing or what is going on
07:52:40 PM | MrLuluApples | LoL
07:53:03 PM | invincib1emutant | Cool splash screen
07:53:24 PM | _Jot_ | EricKidd, you're old enough to know what you're doing, just do whatever you want
07:53:28 PM | OldGuyJim | I just checked...it looks available for windows.
07:53:33 PM | Garbee | There is a Windows binary out.
07:53:40 PM | GoodGuy | or Photoshop if you are Christa
07:53:41 PM | Garbee | http://www.gimp.org/downloads/
07:53:53 PM | Garbee | The GIMP team won't make binaries anymore though.
07:54:22 PM | pyrosrock | nice RobbieF
07:54:31 PM | Garbee | Single window mode!
07:54:37 PM | Garbee | My fav feature.
07:54:56 PM | Garbee | I just think one window mode is neater.
07:55:07 PM | Garbee | It was, you just had to follow the link.
07:56:15 PM | Garbee | Full GEGL support in the next GIMP.
07:56:23 PM | Garbee | In 5 years...
07:56:26 PM | agamotto | GEGL?
07:56:42 PM | Garbee | I think it is an image rendering engine.
07:56:55 PM | agamotto | ahh
07:56:56 PM | Garbee | http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GEGL
07:57:34 PM | Garbee | RobbieF, You need to enable GEGL under the "View" menu.
07:57:40 PM | agamotto | Does it have 'reality-filters,' like Fox News?
07:57:47 PM | Garbee | and it is only partially supported in 2.8.
07:57:53 PM | Garbee | Will be fully supported in 2.10.
07:58:32 PM | T0B331 | That is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
07:58:52 PM | invincib1emutant | Garbee: it works again, mounted an nfs drive to my home
07:59:01 PM | Garbee | 2.8 is a much anticipated release after being 2 years late.
07:59:15 PM | Scorpio55 | There's a nice GIMP lens for the Unity dash that searches for loads of extras
07:59:18 PM | agamotto | tin-type?
07:59:23 PM | invincib1emutant | Garbee: i created a folder in my home...
07:59:23 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Showing us the GIMP, i did not think it was that kind of show!
07:59:24 PM | Garbee | invincib1emutant, Did you do it through fstab?
07:59:30 PM | invincib1emutant | Garbee: yes
07:59:39 PM | Garbee | invincib1emutant, I don't need a rundown of how you did it.
07:59:50 PM | invincib1emutant | and then run sudo mount -a
07:59:52 PM | invincib1emutant | that is it
07:59:54 PM | OldGuyJim | Late or not, I'm just grateful for all that the people have put into it.
08:00:04 PM | agamotto | no kidding
08:00:17 PM | invincib1emutant | Garbee: this is another machine running 12.04
08:00:20 PM | Garbee | Yea, Grouping layers. Sweet.
08:00:41 PM | Garbee | invincib1emutant, Perhaps an update has come out since 10.04 that allows it then. I will be doing some testing. Thanks for the info.
08:01:15 PM | MrLuluApples | Invinciblemutant is that new directory a tmpfs or /dev/shm directory?
08:01:21 PM | invincib1emutant | Garbee: perhaps, i know that a mounted drive cannot be used as a user home, that is true
08:01:26 PM | OldGuyJim | Thank you RobbieF and super co-host Erik
08:01:37 PM | T0B331 | Happy Birthday EricKidd :)
08:01:43 PM | Garbee | invincib1emutant, actually, that can be fuged to be made to work.
08:01:46 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Thanks EricKidd and Main Host!
08:01:48 PM | Garbee | By default no though.
08:02:01 PM | RobbieF | thanks everyone!
08:02:01 PM | invincib1emutant | Garbee: how?
08:02:12 PM | invincib1emutant | RobbieF: well done
08:02:17 PM | GoodGuy | Except Ms Wells
08:02:31 PM | MrLuluApples | Invinciblemutant, on my desktop I have the system on one hard drive and /home on the other.
08:02:44 PM | Garbee | invincib1emutant, Look at how Novell does it. They had some kind of thing for it a while back, commercial though and only for businesses. I don't know if they have changed their config since though.
08:02:50 PM | MrLuluApples | It can be done, just change where home mounts to the other mounted drive.
08:02:59 PM | Garbee | It was a few years ago last I checked on their stuff.
08:03:08 PM | pyrosrock | same here MrLuluApples plus another 3 hds
08:03:11 PM | GoodGuy | I installed Ubuntu 11.10 along side 10.04 LTS on my wifes older PC
08:03:16 PM | invincib1emutant | MrLuluApples: yea, indeeed, i am wrong..that is common
08:03:24 PM | EricKidd | Thanks everyone!
08:03:32 PM | T0B331 | Great show!! :D
08:03:35 PM | MrLuluApples | There are only like 4 directories you can't remount: /proc /dev and I think /sys and /etc...
08:03:37 PM | Dennis_Kelley | beer time!
08:03:40 PM | GoodGuy | She loves 10.04, but said 11.10 was too slow and asked me to uninstall it
08:03:57 PM | MrLuluApples | By remounrt I mean mount elsewhere.
08:03:59 PM | Dennis_Kelley | No opener! NOOOOO!!
08:04:09 PM | agamotto | Whenever I move to 12.04 or Mint, I will be doing a clean install
08:04:12 PM | GoodGuy | It is odd.... 11.10 had to be installed by alternate installer
08:04:23 PM | invincib1emutant | hi fork, how to check for ubuntu version from command line?
08:04:27 PM | MrLuluApples | pyro, raid 10 and LVM for the win!
08:04:34 PM | GoodGuy | I tried regular as well as Linux Mint and they both failed
08:04:46 PM | T0B331 | Hey guys i have to fly now i need to do a few things :) beback on in about an hour
08:04:48 PM | MrLuluApples | You runnin' XFS on GTP?
08:04:50 PM | agamotto | I was never able to get any 11.x version to install on my systems
08:04:54 PM | MrLuluApples | FAST!
08:05:10 PM | GoodGuy | Wonder why agamotto
08:05:10 PM | Dennis_Kelley | lsb-release
08:05:12 PM | pyrosrock | MrLuluApples nah i have win on one games on another and movies on another
08:05:50 PM | agamotto | GoodGuy- nVidia problems, and with 11.10 the installer kept choking on my need to dual-boot
08:06:23 PM | pyrosrock | agamotto i had simmilar issues... 11.04 installed but never ran properly
08:06:27 PM | MrLuluApples | Its always better to spread it out though. This system is a laptop and I only hove three partitions because I have a /boot and a bios partition. The main partition is encrypted but I have it split up through LVM.
08:06:42 PM | GoodGuy | lsb_release -r
08:07:00 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Thanks GoodGuy!
08:07:13 PM | GoodGuy | That is it... my wifes PC has an old nVidia card
08:07:47 PM | invincib1emutant | Dennis_Kelley: lsb_release -r
08:07:49 PM | GoodGuy | welcome, but thank whoever wrote lsb-release earlier.... I googled that to see the exact syntax
08:07:52 PM | invincib1emutant | that gives 14
08:07:55 PM | invincib1emutant | what does it mean
08:07:55 PM | pyrosrock | RobbieF does ubuntu support virtual RAID?
08:07:55 PM | agamotto | Now that they are cheaper, I think I may move my Mythbuntu systems to 2xx or 4xx series cards sometime this summer.
08:08:32 PM | GoodGuy | says this on PinguyOS (Ubuntu fork) Release: 11.04
08:08:45 PM | MrLuluApples | agamotto, I am doing a mythbox too. I gotta install an antenna though.
08:08:51 PM | Garbee | Night everyone.
08:08:58 PM | pyrosrock | agamotto the 4xx series cards have massive bugs in them... go 5xx or go 2xx
08:09:03 PM | agamotto | MrLuluApples- OTA should be a doddle
08:09:25 PM | GoodGuy | OTA is just behind Blu-Ray
08:09:33 PM | invincib1emutant | Dennis_Kelley: Sorry, got 14 on fedora...:P
08:09:34 PM | pyrosrock | agamotto the 5xx cards are the same as 4xx but without the bugs basicaly
08:09:39 PM | GoodGuy | uncompressed compared to cable
08:09:39 PM | invincib1emutant | Dennis_Kelley: my mistake
08:09:49 PM | agamotto | pyrosrock- probably 2xx then... just to be able to use VDPAU... my 7xxx series cards are not quite good enough for that
08:09:51 PM | MrLuluApples | I'm really considering a beagle board for mine.
08:10:11 PM | RobbieF | Yes pyrosrock - you can open Disk Utility and go File -> Create new RAID
08:10:14 PM | RobbieF | or something like that :)
08:10:23 PM | GoodGuy | We still have an antenna on our roof. OTA looks terrific
08:10:36 PM | pyrosrock | agamotto yeah tell me about it i have a 6200 in my old com
08:10:42 PM | GoodGuy | I switch to that to watch major sporting events
08:10:48 PM | MrLuluApples | a MythBeagleboard. All external peripherals and hard drive on a USB hub.
08:10:59 PM | invincib1emutant | everyone here should try irssi
08:11:08 PM | invincib1emutant | what a irc client
08:11:10 PM | pyrosrock | agamotto and a 560 in my new one... had a 240 4 a while good card for the price
08:11:11 PM | GoodGuy | IRC client, isnt it?
08:11:13 PM | agamotto | I cut the cable cord myself earlier. With working, and Mediacom not being helpful about the QAM mapping, it was easy to quit paying them US$70/month
08:11:19 PM | invincib1emutant | loving it
08:11:41 PM | invincib1emutant | quick, clean and easy
08:11:58 PM | GoodGuy | I use XChat.... Prefer mIRC just because I used it for ages
08:12:05 PM | pyrosrock | RobbieF anny massive downsides to virtual raid over physical on board raid?
08:12:28 PM | invincib1emutant | tab works to autocomplete things here in irsii
08:12:31 PM | invincib1emutant | irssi
08:12:38 PM | GoodGuy | I ran mIRC under CrossOver in the past, but it still had a few screen redraw issues
08:12:45 PM | agamotto | I just saw this week in Consumer Reports magazine that Mediacom comes in near dead-last in cable/net/VoIP service
08:12:53 PM | invincib1emutant | i just type Ga, then tab, it complete it as Garbee
08:12:54 PM | GoodGuy | It does that in almost any IRC client
08:13:08 PM | agamotto | Perhaps I can help get Moline to cancel their franchise license
08:13:12 PM | MrLuluApples | pyrosock, not really, in fact software raid is a bit better because you don't have to worry about losing your array to a dead controller.
08:13:31 PM | GoodGuy | If you press Tab again, it will find the next userid with that same prefix
08:13:38 PM | invincib1emutant | Ro + tab --> RobbieF:
08:13:42 PM | invincib1emutant | cool stuff
08:13:49 PM | pyrosrock | MrLuluApples so how do u get it back if the os dies?
08:14:39 PM | invincib1emutant | ok guys, good night, it is 1.14am here
08:14:46 PM | invincib1emutant | thanks RobbieF
08:14:50 PM | invincib1emutant | and EricKidd
08:15:02 PM | MrLuluApples | generally, you recreate the array without erasing data when you reinstall.
08:15:03 PM | invincib1emutant | have a nice week ahead
08:15:06 PM | pyrosrock | invincib1emutant, i wish that was the time and not early morning
08:15:10 PM | agamotto | enjoy yourself
08:15:35 PM | invincib1emutant | pyrosrock: :)
08:15:36 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, gravity has failed, you appear upside down on the BSP
08:15:39 PM | agamotto | 0114 isn't considered early by you?
08:15:42 PM | Dennis_Kelley | RobbieF - you are all flipped!
08:15:48 PM | invincib1emutant | RobbieF: EricKidd upside down
08:16:19 PM | Dennis_Kelley | I can see more with that view!!
08:16:20 PM | invincib1emutant | bye
08:16:49 PM | pyrosrock | RobbieF is testing to see if annyone is paying atention to the BSP
08:16:57 PM | RobbieF | ha
08:17:02 PM | RobbieF | no, if I was doing that, I'd do this....
08:17:07 PM | agamotto | I am not... I am fetching some updates while chatting
08:17:28 PM | MrLuluApples | Robbie, don't be so negative!
08:17:38 PM | pyrosrock | oh thanks RobbieF the clarity
08:17:42 PM | _Jot_ | wow, EricKidd is on fire
08:17:44 PM | Dennis_Kelley | EricKidd is Hot tonight!
08:17:53 PM | MrLuluApples | Neat!
08:18:08 PM | GoodGuy | This also displays Ubuntu Version
08:18:10 PM | GoodGuy | cat /etc/issue
08:18:12 PM | pyrosrock | RobbieF u need to do that during the show
08:18:14 PM | EricKidd | When ur hot ur hot!
08:18:24 PM | _Jot_ | Software can't give you hair RobbieF
08:18:33 PM | _Jot_ | Seriously, it completely failed
08:18:38 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Cute
08:18:38 PM | agamotto | GoodGuy- Send it in as a viewer tip
08:19:01 PM | GoodGuy | I saw it here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=796627
08:19:05 PM | agamotto | On that note, I must away. I have to be at work around 0700 tomorrow.
08:19:11 PM | pyrosrock | RobbieF liks to be able to make out with himself
08:19:13 PM | GoodGuy | night agamotto
08:19:20 PM | agamotto | I need to get some laundry dried and folded before I turn in.
08:19:23 PM | RobbieF | night agamotto
08:19:37 PM | MrLuluApples | Goodguy, what does " dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda do?
08:20:09 PM | GoodGuy | Copies a random pattern to "zero" out a hard drive
08:20:22 PM | MrLuluApples | darn, he knew...
08:20:24 PM | GoodGuy | Yes I have one.... that was the joke...
08:20:25 PM | MrLuluApples | :)
08:21:15 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Nice smile RobbieF
08:21:34 PM | MrLuluApples | dev/zero is faster, but not as clean
08:21:45 PM | GoodGuy | Years ago when I started in programming mainframes, I used to kid a coworker to grab an assembler manual and quiz me on opcodes
08:22:33 PM | GoodGuy | They use a random pattern because zeros arent as effective in obscuring the prior data
08:22:43 PM | _Jot_ | GoodGuy, you cheated with that manual, all the pages were marked!
08:23:02 PM | GoodGuy | It was his manual
08:23:34 PM | MrLuluApples | Hey, did anyone see the news on Slashdot? Apparently Ubuntu is shipping on 5% of all new pc's worldwide. Considering that OSX I'd say that is pretty signifigant.
08:23:46 PM | _Jot_ | GoodGuy that is why it was cheating, you left your manual pristine and marked his
08:24:04 PM | MrLuluApples | OSX is shipping on 6%
08:24:39 PM | GoodGuy | I have hundreds of books in this junkpit called home and most of my books look pristine
08:24:52 PM | _Jot_ | I'd be more impressed if it was used on all new pc's instead of shipping, many people will be installing windows as soon as they get it
08:25:00 PM | GoodGuy | some because I never touched them after buying them lol
08:25:04 PM | MrLuluApples | GoodGuy is linux your primary OS?
08:25:33 PM | GoodGuy | No... I use WinXP just because I bought a ton of shareware
08:25:58 PM | _Jot_ | EricKidd, by the way, I send in a viewer-testimonial, you may want to read it
08:26:05 PM | GoodGuy | I play in PinguyOS (Ubuntu based)
08:26:44 PM | GoodGuy | then I have a 2nd set of partitions I install various linux flavors just to try out
08:27:13 PM | GoodGuy | I had PCLinuxOS 2012 installed until Ubuntu 12.04 came out
08:27:42 PM | GoodGuy | I backup it up using a program called Terabyte's Imaging products
08:28:13 PM | GoodGuy | CloneZilla would do the job also.. just didnt know about it when I started
08:28:54 PM | GoodGuy | Then I use VirtualBox to try out other distros to see the install prompts
08:29:14 PM | MrLuluApples | No hard drive of mine has been soiled by windows since 2005. I was pretty much a windows part timer from 1999 to 2005. I only run debian since 05 and ran it most of the time from 99 to 05.
08:29:22 PM | GoodGuy | Thanks to RobbieF 's earlier episode teaching us how to use VBox
08:29:52 PM | GoodGuy | Funny part is my wifes PC has two WinXP SP3 installs
08:29:55 PM | MrLuluApples | That is HUGE Robbie!
08:30:06 PM | GoodGuy | Both run lousy and the newer one freezes
08:30:22 PM | MrLuluApples | two?
08:30:37 PM | GoodGuy | I got her to try Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and now she doesn't want WinXP back
08:30:42 PM | MrLuluApples | Oh, on vbox.
08:31:17 PM | GoodGuy | Older one was my cluttered install.. I gave her a fresh install when she inherited the older PC
08:31:34 PM | GoodGuy | No two real installs od WinXP
08:32:00 PM | GoodGuy | I bought a new PC a few years ago and she used it for ages
08:32:27 PM | GoodGuy | Then she got annoyed I spent the money and never used it myself lol
08:32:51 PM | GoodGuy | alot of work moving junk from an old PC to a new one
08:33:36 PM | GoodGuy | But cant upset the wifey too much and expect her to agree to the next tech goodies
08:34:18 PM | DJHotWheels | Robbie and Eric I sent a PM. I will wait till u can answer.:)
08:34:20 PM | GoodGuy | so I switched to this PC and she took the old AMD 1.4 Ghz T-Bird dinosaur
08:35:38 PM | Dennis_Kelley | I like dinosaurs! Old computers are fun!
08:35:47 PM | GoodGuy | Category 5 TV imparted knowledge converted Mrs GoodGuy to Ubuntu
08:36:13 PM | MrLuluApples | All my junk is on an external hard drive. I have a nice little rsync script that cron calls every hour.
08:36:24 PM | GoodGuy | She was thinking she needed Office and I installed LibreOffice
08:36:46 PM | GoodGuy | Told her to try it and if she isnt happy I'll install Office in Crossover
08:37:09 PM | GoodGuy | she never asked, so LibreOffice did the job
08:37:23 PM | MrLuluApples | I can back up my whole hard drive in about 20 minutes with rsync, my wifes newer, faster system took more than a day and a half to get to 50% with windows backup.
08:37:40 PM | GoodGuy | Do you leave the external drive powered on constantly?
08:37:50 PM | GoodGuy | I feared overheating
08:37:57 PM | MrLuluApples | Over night
08:38:23 PM | GoodGuy | I bought a new external bay when Newegg had it on sale
08:38:37 PM | GoodGuy | That has a cooling fan in it
08:38:38 PM | MrLuluApples | I create restore points on my systems hard disk too so if it isnt connected I get a restore point/
08:39:02 PM | MrLuluApples | My system spins it down though
08:39:12 PM | GoodGuy | but the two I use now dont and I am afraid it might overheat drives and shorten their life
08:40:03 PM | Dennis_Kelley | That is what I do not like about my Pogoplug with external hard drives running.
08:40:15 PM | GoodGuy | I can create Differential backups with Image for Window-DOS-Linux
08:40:19 PM | Dennis_Kelley | but it is better than a full server running
08:40:36 PM | _Jot_ | you could always get one of those usb-fans and use that to cool the drives
08:41:05 PM | GoodGuy | I also use a windows program called GoodSync to keep synced folders up to daye every so often
08:41:45 PM | _Jot_ | GoodGuy, because RobbieF told you it's a good product :)
08:42:02 PM | GoodGuy | I am pretty much homebound, so remote access isnt a need
08:42:08 PM | GoodGuy | Probably lol
08:42:27 PM | _Jot_ | it can still be useful if you want to give others access to something without letting them on your computer
08:42:35 PM | Dennis_Kelley | well send it to me. i will give you off site backup!
08:42:43 PM | GoodGuy | I was going to have our son backup key files on our system
08:43:12 PM | GoodGuy | But my wife declared we were buying the son an external hard drive
08:43:40 PM | GoodGuy | The way she worded it, I knew just go hard drive shopping :-)
08:45:00 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Beer Two in the Cat5 Studio
08:46:32 PM | GoodGuy | I would like to convery my Pogoplug to run Linux and use it as a poor mans low power NAS gadget
08:46:44 PM | GoodGuy | convert
08:47:00 PM | MrLuluApples | Of course I don't have a whole lot worth backing up.
08:47:01 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Me too GoodGuy
08:47:18 PM | GoodGuy | They have a fair amt of docs on the Pogoplug site, but hard to tell what is outdated
08:47:29 PM | Dennis_Kelley | have not got around to trying
08:47:56 PM | GoodGuy | It seemed to get much harder after a Pogoplug software update
08:48:34 PM | Dennis_Kelley | RobbieF - Speaking of Pogoplugs any luck with the issue we were having?
08:48:40 PM | GoodGuy | I believe they have to use some ARM version and it wasnt easy
08:48:59 PM | RobbieF | problem?
08:49:03 PM | RobbieF | what issue?
08:49:36 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF is currently time-travelling to the future to attempt creating episodes about many things
08:50:06 PM | Dennis_Kelley | i got a replacement from them, because the first one stopped working. never sent it back
08:50:30 PM | GoodGuy | Pogoplug is pretty popular here, so any additional use is a bonus
08:50:56 PM | GoodGuy | They didnt get your charge card number?
08:51:03 PM | Dennis_Kelley | No
08:51:16 PM | _Jot_ | if you're good with hardware and such, you might be able to get a jtag cable in there and see if it really doesn't work anymore
08:51:36 PM | Dennis_Kelley | what is a jtag cable
08:51:43 PM | GoodGuy | Strange.. most places do that and charge it if you dont mail back the old after a time
08:52:02 PM | Dennis_Kelley | i bought it at bestbuy
08:52:06 PM | GoodGuy | a serial cable to access a console function iirc
08:52:07 PM | _Jot_ | a jtag cable is a special cable that you connect to a device to debug it
08:52:21 PM | Dennis_Kelley | I will look into that!
08:52:44 PM | GoodGuy | They use them in unbricking routers being hacked
08:52:54 PM | _Jot_ | it may involve soldering an actual connector, and such, so it really is advanced stuff
08:53:22 PM | GoodGuy | at least I see the term mentioned there
08:53:24 PM | Dennis_Kelley | i can solder with my eyes closed
08:53:38 PM | GoodGuy | But can you do it right :-)
08:53:48 PM | _Jot_ | often in early versions of devices, they still have everything and you only need a cable, in later versions they often remove the connector but leave the connections on the circuitboard, and in even later versions they often leave the jtag out completely
08:54:17 PM | GoodGuy | Newest isnt always the best
08:54:39 PM | Dennis_Kelley | for sure! i used to do surface mount soldering by hand. i would take out my contacts, put on safety glasses and solder each leg one at a time!
08:55:17 PM | _Jot_ | I can't remember if the jtag is still on the pogoplug etc, but I am sure google knows :)
08:55:33 PM | Dennis_Kelley | the all mighty google!
08:55:44 PM | GoodGuy | Neat Dennis_Kelley
08:56:08 PM | _Jot_ | and if you have two that do have the same boards, and the broken one still works partially, you might be able to resurrect it with the software of the other
08:56:19 PM | GoodGuy | I had enough hassles trying to solder slot car stuff back in the day
08:56:25 PM | Dennis_Kelley | No need for microscope to solder
08:56:51 PM | Dennis_Kelley | of course you have to have the right equipment to solder the correct way!
08:56:51 PM | GoodGuy | and that isnt fine work like circit boards
08:57:22 PM | _Jot_ | I never learned proper soldering and such, but since there's lots of videos online, I'm sure I'd manage if I had to now :)
08:58:12 PM | Dennis_Kelley | that is one skill every computer/electronic nerd should master
08:58:20 PM | GoodGuy | Guy laid me off and kept the people who were stealing from him
08:58:40 PM | GoodGuy | It made little sense at the time
08:59:22 PM | GoodGuy | Years later I met him and he said he did it because he thought I wouldnt return to school if I got to work doing that
08:59:53 PM | GoodGuy | I thanked him since I did go back and finished college later
09:00:33 PM | _Jot_ | yeah, going to school is sensible, I didn't finish school and now I watch people on the internet drinking beer instead of drinking champagne or something myself
09:00:46 PM | GoodGuy | Actually I just graduated on time because I wazs double-promoted once and quit a year
09:01:24 PM | GoodGuy | Life changes the minute you walk out of HS
09:02:11 PM | Dennis_Kelley | i wish that I went to school after High School. I just started working. I am going back for my Degree in the fall.
09:02:23 PM | GoodGuy | I was kidding around in my first college class and the professor said get serious and work hard or leave a seat for someone else
09:02:35 PM | GoodGuy | Good job Dennis_Kelley
09:03:18 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Programming or IT security
09:03:36 PM | GoodGuy | When I graduated he hired me to do some work for one of the companies he owned
09:04:04 PM | GoodGuy | He took me to lunch in his old Karman Ghia orange car
09:04:19 PM | GoodGuy | I figured he must not make much lol
09:04:37 PM | GoodGuy | Later I discovered he was very well off
09:04:58 PM | GoodGuy | Lived in one of the most expensive cities
09:05:11 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Karman Ghia's were cool! My mom had one when I was a kid
09:05:25 PM | GoodGuy | and owned a coin store among other computer businesses
09:05:53 PM | GoodGuy | My first programming job I worked on an insurance contract
09:06:16 PM | GoodGuy | Got that running so well, I stopped getting any night calls
09:06:39 PM | GoodGuy | so they moved me to work on some coin account
09:07:07 PM | GoodGuy | I thought it was basically a demotion since coin places must be small change
09:07:34 PM | GoodGuy | after I left for another job, I saw the place mentioned on tv news
09:07:57 PM | pyrosrock | hey RobbieF EricKidd not going anywhere?
09:08:08 PM | pyrosrock | no my BSP!
09:08:10 PM | _Jot_ | now they are really going to have a party
09:08:13 PM | GoodGuy | They were mentioned along with a billion dollar fraud investigation lol
09:08:44 PM | GoodGuy | guess it wasnt the small change after all
09:09:34 PM | GoodGuy | Life was so different back in the early days of programming
09:09:57 PM | GoodGuy | we did the dumbest stuff and no one ever said a word
09:10:15 PM | GoodGuy | I was into all those karate movies
09:10:39 PM | GoodGuy | We brought a few kung-fu throwing stars
09:10:56 PM | GoodGuy | tossed them into boxes of printer paper
09:11:18 PM | GoodGuy | The operations supervisor was doing it too lol
09:11:27 PM | Dennis_Kelley | sweet
09:11:39 PM | GoodGuy | You wouldnt last a day acting that immature nowadays
09:12:00 PM | pyrosrock | iknow its so gay
09:12:09 PM | Dennis_Kelley | well it still happens at some jobs, but it shouldn't
09:12:52 PM | GoodGuy | We had a guy who used to work a few months and then live on some Greek island drinking wine from those goat skin bottles
09:13:18 PM | GoodGuy | I saw him, but didnt know him personally
09:14:22 PM | GoodGuy | We were a service company, so we had numerous programmers by day
09:14:41 PM | GoodGuy | the operations staff worked every shirt
09:14:44 PM | GoodGuy | shift
09:15:03 PM | GoodGuy | Every one was on 24 hr call (programmers)
09:15:36 PM | GoodGuy | If they couldnt reach the regular programmer, they called another until one answered
09:16:03 PM | pyrosrock | sounds fun
09:16:27 PM | GoodGuy | I answered almost all the time, so they decided why not create an afternoon shift programmer on site
09:17:13 PM | GoodGuy | They said I was so good at debugging and reading core dumps, I could converse on an intelligent level with the normal programmer
09:17:34 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Good Job! took pride in your work!
09:17:40 PM | GoodGuy | It made sense, but afternoons wasnt the greatest when you have kids
09:17:49 PM | GoodGuy | brbias
09:17:49 PM | Dennis_Kelley | That is me, I take pride in all I do!
09:18:24 PM | T0B33 | hey everyone i've got a question related to Lubuntu. It's not on the LTS tree but if i took ubuntu and did sudo apt-get install Lubuntu-desktop would that still carry on updating for 5 years? I know Lubuntu itself wont but i mean the updates provided by canonical that fix security issues and that?
09:20:55 PM | pyrosrock | yes
09:21:01 PM | pyrosrock | i do belive so
09:21:13 PM | T0B33 | Excellent Excellent :) Thanks :D
09:23:25 PM | GoodGuy | back - had to take my sugar
09:23:42 PM | GoodGuy | another small hole in my body lol
09:24:15 PM | GoodGuy | I tried to do that Dennis_Kelley
09:24:43 PM | Dennis_Kelley | You have to take your sugar often?
09:24:58 PM | T0B33 | Bad for your teeth
