06:58:29 PM | invinciblemutant | less GPU demanding as compared to Unity
06:58:30 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, don't forget to tell Hillary about the new studio... Unless you don't want her to show up there
06:59:03 PM | Dave-Maydew | my Sony Vaio VGC-V2M is an All-in-One media PC

06:59:34 PM | Garbee | Good evening Hillary.
06:59:36 PM | Dave-Maydew | they've released a driver update for it, so it works in 2D on Unity
06:59:38 PM | invinciblemutant | X3100 is not an high end gpu either
06:59:43 PM | _Jot_ | okay RobbieF, I'll go have fun! *turns off category5* oh wait, that isn't fun
07:00:04 PM | Dave-Maydew | I'll have to give it a go
07:00:12 PM | invinciblemutant | Dave-Maydew: do you mean a driver specifically for intel based GMA based graphics?
07:01:04 PM | Dave-Maydew | no, nVidia
07:01:08 PM | _Jot_ | We'll never be sick of you Hillary
07:01:27 PM | chrisreich | People of Earth, Greetings.
07:01:28 PM | Dave-Maydew | I'm running the Acer Aspire One AO751h with the GMA500
07:01:43 PM | chrisreich | ...also to Garbee
07:01:48 PM | Dave-Maydew | only distro that works well on it so far is Jol-OS
07:01:53 PM | invinciblemutant | Dave-Maydew: ic, i have desktop machine in the office back in manchester, it is ATI based, it does need a driver for me to extend my desktop to another screen...
07:02:02 PM | invinciblemutant | Dave-Maydew: it does not work with the driver
07:02:05 PM | Garbee | Oh, Twitter was down.

07:02:36 PM | Michaeliowa | hi all:)
07:02:43 PM | robgor | hi all

07:02:51 PM | Dave-Maydew | Ubuntu doesn't work well with the GMA500
07:02:54 PM | pyrosrock | hey guys bit late as my compiz crashed!
07:03:04 PM | invinciblemutant | i upgraded to the ubuntu 12.04, it does not work well with unity, i ended up with gnome3
07:03:39 PM | Dave-Maydew | Hey Pyrosrock
07:03:49 PM | Dave-Maydew | Ubuntu 12.04 issue??
07:04:07 PM | pyrosrock | hey Dave-Maydew yeah in 12.04
07:04:13 PM | Dave-Maydew | oh dear

07:04:23 PM | invinciblemutant | i still remember that unity was introdude with motication that GUI works optimally on netbooks as well tablets
07:04:26 PM | chrisreich | Dave-Maydew GMA500 is a problem area for Linux. Only a proprietary driver has been / will ever be released.
07:04:40 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, you are going to switch seats with Hillary? That's a big move!
07:04:50 PM | invinciblemutant | it is really a shame that the latest ubuntu gave up the compatibility to these devices
07:05:02 PM | Garbee | Robbie just got Fiber to the studio... Then moves.
07:05:04 PM | Dave-Maydew | they've started writing a open source GMA500 driver
07:05:15 PM | Dave-Maydew | but don't know how good it works
07:05:17 PM | robgor | yeah 12.04 has issues that never happened to me b4, crashes in fallback mode, but unlike a windows crash it still works
07:05:36 PM | chrisreich | reverse engineered? Dave-Maydew
07:05:48 PM | invinciblemutant | RobbieF: if twitter is down, then it should go to your technews

07:07:55 PM | _Jot_ | The music really sounds a lot better in the files, because the video/audio is compressed on ustream/justin etc, so it really is worth to send some money to Robbie and to Eric as well

07:23:17 PM | agamotto | chaslinux, not fun
07:23:23 PM | GoodGuy | Who is your VOIP provider
07:23:45 PM | chaslinux | talkit.ca - $60/year (Canada wide), support in English and Spanish.
07:23:51 PM | GoodGuy | I just ported our landline to Ooma .... went final today
07:23:58 PM | _Jot_ | chaslinux, that kind of failures always happen at such times when it isn't your fault but you changed something :)
07:24:02 PM | Garbee | I really need to not have Cat5 on while coding.
07:24:08 PM | Garbee | Keep getting distracted.
07:24:14 PM | Dave-Maydew | Barny belch??
07:24:26 PM | GoodGuy | Ooma is $3.95 a month.. Buy the Ooma telo.. it was $149 at Costco (USA)
07:24:32 PM | agamotto | Well, to harden your network, go to Home Depot, get a few bags of Quick Concrete, mix with water, pour liberally on and around your gateway... will be very secure once it sets.
07:24:46 PM | ajamison5579 | agamotto lol
07:24:48 PM | Garbee | SFTP

07:24:57 PM | chaslinux | _Jot_ esp when my wife says "what did you do?" Luckily we have a neighbour who uses the same VOIP provider and they were out too...
07:25:03 PM | Garbee | I think SCP goes through SSH though iirc.
07:25:22 PM | robgor | with salt robbie
07:25:32 PM | robgor | dont forget the salt
07:25:35 PM | _Jot_ | chaslinux, I bet the provider shut itsself down because stuff was suddenly so good, it couldn't be right
07:25:42 PM | Garbee | robgor, Salt is mainly for passwords stored in a DB.
07:25:51 PM | Garbee | SSL doesn't really do anything with salt.
07:25:59 PM | robgor | yeah true
07:26:10 PM | Garbee | Passwords in a DB = Sum + salt (at least).
07:26:11 PM | ajamison5579 | thawte.com
07:26:12 PM | agamotto | Didn't Steve Gibson start some company that is offering encrypted everything for some monthly fee?

07:27:17 PM | agamotto | I will have to look on my main box... I received an email recently about some new thing he was starting... was supposed to encrypt your mobiles as well
07:27:27 PM | chaslinux | Oh someone turned me on to gandi.net for domains. They're out of France, but I love them. Their slogan is "No bullshit!"
07:27:39 PM | GoodGuy | It uses Google Voice, so as long as they stay free.. no fees
07:27:48 PM | robgor | no driver video

07:28:57 PM | Dave-Maydew | I say it has a nVidia card
07:29:03 PM | agamotto | Considering Linus' attitude toward nVidia lately, it wouldn't be surprising
07:29:07 PM | Dave-Maydew | I'll put an haggis on it
07:29:09 PM | GoodGuy | lol agamotto
07:29:33 PM | Dave-Maydew | I use a nVidia GPU in a Sony Vaio
07:29:38 PM | robgor | or try live booting it and see what happens
07:29:40 PM | GoodGuy | Imagine..Linus would be kicked from Cat5
07:29:42 PM | agamotto | Talk about articles you don't expect to find on your Kindle...
07:29:45 PM | Dave-Maydew | nVidia are beginning to suck
07:29:49 PM | chaslinux | RobbieF: If it's a laptop Ubuntu 12.04 has a kernel bug with b43 wireless that causes systems to lock up!
07:29:50 PM | Garbee | GoodGuy, Probably.
07:29:53 PM | pyrosrock | have to say nVidia was the only thing u could use when i started with ubuntu
07:30:10 PM | chaslinux | Solution is to blacklist the b43 on boot
07:30:13 PM | GoodGuy | Didnt you see his rant against nVidia
07:30:22 PM | Dave-Maydew | yup
07:30:28 PM | chaslinux | Then install the firmware and you're good to go.

07:30:42 PM | chrisreich | agreed, Garbee
07:30:45 PM | Garbee | Watch the entire clip, not just the one part stirring up controversy.
07:30:51 PM | Garbee | It is much better in perspective.
07:30:53 PM | agamotto | British Standard Time

07:33:00 PM | Garbee | I wonder how many ugly dogs slipped into that list of pictures.
07:33:06 PM | GoodGuy | Ever see info about facial recognition for terrorists?
07:33:16 PM | chrisreich | Hillary - drink more water. There is a lot of clicking when you speak. It's exacerbated by the close mic placement you guys use.
07:33:21 PM | Garbee | chaslinux, Well, he was there for professional reasons.
07:33:24 PM | Dave-Maydew | nVidia signed up to the Linux Foundation

07:33:35 PM | Garbee | Dave-Maydew, Yes, but they still suck.
07:33:52 PM | Garbee | Being in the foundation and being nice to work with are in no way related.
07:33:52 PM | agamotto | Yes, just smile... supposedly, terrorists don't smile while being surveilled.
07:33:54 PM | Dave-Maydew | yup
07:33:58 PM | tic-toc | cats make great moving targets
07:34:19 PM | GoodGuy | They claimed methods to fool it werent effective
07:34:49 PM | GoodGuy | Of course it probably costs millions, so too costly to implement in every area
07:34:53 PM | chrisreich | Garbee how could one find that "stupid stuff" on the intertubes?
07:35:06 PM | chaslinux | @Garbee do you write kernel code?

07:38:06 PM | agamotto | Just remember, if it doesn't record telly, it isn't a proper HTPC...

07:39:01 PM | Garbee | tic-toc, None comes pre-installed tmk.
07:39:01 PM | agamotto | Fair enough
07:39:05 PM | GoodGuy | DVR PC
07:39:34 PM | GoodGuy | I want recording also btw
07:39:39 PM | Garbee | Some come with mint others with windows pre-installed.
07:39:50 PM | smittysmit | does it void warranty?
07:40:09 PM | GoodGuy | Bought Mrs GoodGuy a new PC
07:40:20 PM | DennisKelley | RobbieF - I like to above view!
07:40:20 PM | agamotto | I do have to admit... I don't miss giving $70/month to Mediacom for cable anymore
07:40:50 PM | GoodGuy | A Gateway I3, but the Gateway monitor is poor quality
07:41:11 PM | agamotto | that sucks
07:41:13 PM | ajamison5579 | Robbief do the eSATA ports on that device support Port Multiplication for using a SATA RAID enclosure
07:41:20 PM | GoodGuy | No contrast.... I hooked her PC to my LCD monitor and looked fine
07:41:28 PM | agamotto | Not that hard to make a decent monitor these days
07:42:00 PM | DennisKelley | RobbieF - Whats the cost?
07:42:01 PM | GoodGuy | Tried every adjustment on her monitor... very little diff displayed from low to high values
07:42:03 PM | ajamison5579 | I just asked one
07:42:05 PM | pyrosrock | is the drive upside down RobbieF
07:42:10 PM | Dave-Maydew | There's a $100 price differrence between Win and Linux version
07:42:15 PM | chaslinux | Have used a Dell netbook for the past year for an XBMC machine, works pretty good, but we're only doing by 1366x768.
07:42:29 PM | GoodGuy | The Windows tax Dave-Maydew ?
07:42:41 PM | Dave-Maydew | Yup
07:42:49 PM | agamotto | For most people, 720p is fine for any screen under 40"
07:43:13 PM | Dave-Maydew | I can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on my 32"
07:43:17 PM | ajamison5579 | Robbief can the eSATA ports support Port Multiplication
07:43:19 PM | tic-toc | put Windows 8 on it...
07:43:26 PM | Dave-Maydew | Nooooooo
07:43:32 PM | tic-toc | lol
07:43:33 PM | GoodGuy | I download 720P Youtube vide and play on a 46 in Sony Bravia... looks great to me
07:43:43 PM | Garbee | smittysmit, http://www.fit-pc.com/web/sale-terms/ ... Does not look as if it voids warranty unless you are doing it wrong.
07:44:01 PM | robgor | 8 gig it wont fit
07:44:20 PM | GoodGuy | How much was the FIT?
07:44:20 PM | chaslinux | Ours is 42", but interestingly it won't do 1080p from computer (at least according to the docs). I suspect if I use HDMI it would, over VGA 1366x768 is the max according to docs (Samsung).
07:44:21 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, so how do you get Linux on it, because there is no OS on that HDD?
07:44:22 PM | Dave-Maydew | Windows 8 will gobble the first 1Gb RAM
07:44:28 PM | Garbee | DennisKelley, Cost depends on where you purchase from. See: http://www.fit-pc.com/web/ for more information.
07:44:39 PM | Garbee | http://cat5.tv/fit
07:44:59 PM | Dave-Maydew | lol
07:45:22 PM | robgor | not cheap had a look in Australia cheapest version of the fit pc was $900+
07:45:31 PM | chaslinux | How much RAM do you have in your FIT Robbie?
07:45:32 PM | Michaeliowa | can you put in more ram?
07:45:35 PM | Garbee | Dave-Maydew, The 64bit version will for sure. Havn't tested the 32bit Win 8 yet though.
07:45:40 PM | GoodGuy | Raspberry Pi?
07:45:43 PM | Garbee | Honestly, not planning to. 32bit is old.
07:45:44 PM | robgor | 2 gig in it
07:45:53 PM | agamotto | That is a big markup, even for AUS
07:45:55 PM | Garbee | GoodGuy, This is much more powerful than Pi.
07:46:07 PM | GoodGuy | Yeah but do you need it?
07:46:09 PM | tic-toc | Win 8 32 bit is super fast
07:46:14 PM | Dave-Maydew | I know Win7 eats 1Gb RAM
07:46:15 PM | Garbee | Dave-Maydew, The $100 is roughly the cost of an OEM license for Windows. Makes sense for it.
07:46:32 PM | maxwell6307 | back at ya
07:46:35 PM | chrisreich | Fit PC might be an interesting candidate for clusters. Just thinking.
07:46:39 PM | chaslinux | Dave-Mayhew : especially the starter edition on netbooks...
07:46:48 PM | Dave-Maydew | tic-tac, Linux is quicker
07:46:50 PM | pyrosrock | Garbee i thought it was around $25 for a oem
07:47:04 PM | agamotto | pyrosrock, depends on version
07:47:06 PM | tic-toc | I sorry its not faster now than 8
07:47:08 PM | smittysmit | $100 for a license that you dont actually own
07:47:09 PM | robgor | yeah goodguy for a apache server the raspberry pi would be good enough thoug only 700mhz cpu but around $50 here
07:47:19 PM | tic-toc | I have both
07:47:24 PM | Garbee | pyrosrock, Only in MAJOR bulk buy and insane deals. For normal people it is about $100-$110 depending on version. Even more for Ultimate.
07:47:31 PM | Dave-Maydew | Win 8 is just Win7 with go faster stripes
07:47:41 PM | Dave-Maydew | and a new GUI
07:47:42 PM | chaslinux | smittysmit and in many cases OEMs actually pay quite a bit less than $100 for that license.
07:47:48 PM | Garbee | Basically, HP gets ~$25 a license, Normal people get ~$100 for an OEM license.
07:47:58 PM | tic-toc | No the memory manager is a lot different in 8
07:48:02 PM | chaslinux | @Garbee exactly!
07:48:25 PM | Garbee | pyrosrock, See: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116986
07:48:31 PM | agamotto | Wouldn't you just use Parted to restore table?
07:48:39 PM | Dave-Maydew | Photorec is great
07:49:00 PM | chaslinux | As an OEM we buy licenses, commercial is a bit more than what you've said @Garbee, but not much more, and we're a very small OEM.
07:49:21 PM | agamotto | Ah, 'input!'
07:49:27 PM | Garbee | chaslinux, I'm not going to go into deep details on MS's stupid OEM License agreements. Basics are enough.
07:49:35 PM | pyrosrock | well Garbee i got my oem copy for only $25 otherwise id not have got it
07:49:44 PM | chaslinux | Or you can use foremost instead of photorec. Difference is you don't have to mount the drive with foremost.
07:50:37 PM | chaslinux | Let's just say the license agreement OEMs have to read is much larger than consumers have to read... lol
07:50:44 PM | Garbee | pyrosrock, Then I'd love to know how, because you shouldn't have gotten that good of a deal.
07:51:34 PM | agamotto | FAT16? That is what those cards use? ick.....
07:51:47 PM | pyrosrock | @Garbee i have a awesome computer shop that gives me the same price as most wholesale prices
07:51:48 PM | Garbee | chaslinux, Yes, that is due to the nature of the license they have and its use-case. There are also other agreements to get deeper discounts as well on the software.
07:52:15 PM | Garbee | pyrosrock, They *should* not even get that kind of a deal on Windows OEM Licenses.
07:52:25 PM | Garbee | Unless they happen to be a super-buyer from MS.
07:52:31 PM | chrisreich | agamotto probably FAT-EX
07:53:05 PM | robgor | silly
07:53:05 PM | pyrosrock | well there suplyer probs buys a fair few but i duno i just bought it
07:53:08 PM | chaslinux | But it's amazing how many people still think Windows comes on every PC... and the amount of people we get with pirated copies installed on a whitebox system...
07:53:35 PM | agamotto | Time for some custom firmware, and ext3
07:54:15 PM | chaslinux | @Garbee there are licenses quite a bit less than the HP one you noted, but special cases around it (Charity/Low income).
07:54:30 PM | chrisreich | yeah agamotto, I think there are some cameras that use one version or another of ext fs
07:55:22 PM | tic-toc | wonder who deleted them???
07:55:35 PM | chrisreich | Teletubbies!!!
07:55:43 PM | agamotto | no comment
07:55:44 PM | Dave-Maydew | she looks like a Telly Tubby
07:55:49 PM | Garbee | RobbieF, Green Screen Magic! GO!
07:56:25 PM | GoodGuy | Fifth Dimension song
07:56:29 PM | Michaeliowa | lol
07:56:43 PM | _Jot_ | Hillary, you can always kill him after the show :)
07:56:53 PM | GoodGuy | Your sister is the cutest Ms Piggy I have ever seen
07:57:07 PM | GoodGuy | Not that I have seen all that many
07:57:19 PM | Hillary | hahahaa
07:57:41 PM | GoodGuy | Haven't seen Kermit that I can recall... heard the name plenty of times
07:58:00 PM | chaslinux | Under Windows, Recuvva is a point and click file recovery program, not bad either.
07:58:22 PM | agamotto | "Oh, Kermie..."
07:58:23 PM | robgor | so hillary anymore inner child pictures to share ?
07:58:45 PM | GoodGuy | HAK5 did an episode of Linux file recovery a few months ago
07:58:53 PM | ajamison5579 | Robbief blow that picture up to a 8x10 and give it to her husband to hang in the house
07:58:55 PM | ajamison5579 | :)
07:59:03 PM | GoodGuy | lol ajamison5579
07:59:05 PM | Garbee | Scalpal.
07:59:06 PM | agamotto | Hmmmm. so the show will be turning into Ghost Hunters?
07:59:10 PM | Garbee | I probably spelt that wrong too.
07:59:14 PM | Garbee | spelled*
07:59:41 PM | agamotto | spelled/spelt, either is acceptable these days
07:59:41 PM | tic-toc | gimme gimme
07:59:55 PM | robgor | can anyone suggest a particular brand of printer thats easy to setup in linux?
08:00:07 PM | agamotto | Hewlett-Packard, Brother
08:00:12 PM | GoodGuy | I believe Robbie likes Brother
08:00:16 PM | pyrosrock | brother
08:00:18 PM | chrisreich | Brother robgor
08:00:18 PM | Stevo | hp, canon epson
08:00:22 PM | GoodGuy | HP has some Linux drivers
08:00:28 PM | chaslinux | Robbie don't they only work on Windows and Mac OS X? (Magic Jack)
08:00:32 PM | GoodGuy | Canon is hard to find in the USA
08:00:47 PM | chrisreich | Buh-bye all.
08:00:47 PM | Garbee | robgor, Brother and HP. Brother is preferred since HP does some stupid stuff in their machines to stop user-service of them.
08:00:49 PM | tic-toc | bye
08:00:49 PM | GoodGuy | I got the drivers from Canon Europe
08:00:49 PM | agamotto | chaslinux, for inital setup, yes
08:00:58 PM | Dave-Maydew | Another good show
08:01:29 PM | agamotto | Canon has taken a serious nose-dive in quality since the early 2000s
08:01:32 PM | Michaeliowa | bye all :) have a good night!!
08:01:33 PM | AT | quit

08:03:47 PM | Garbee | See you later Hillary. Thanks for co-hosting this evening!
08:03:54 PM | GoodGuy | This is an All-In-One

08:04:54 PM | GoodGuy | I bought an old Canon USB scanner at a garage sale years ago for $3.. like new
08:05:13 PM | GoodGuy | I figured it was probably defective, but worked fine
08:05:34 PM | robgor | I have setup canon's b4 and been a pain, suppose I can look at the manufacturers and see who supports linux. It just this is going to be for a system I have been asked to setup for someone else and what something that is easy incase problems occur
08:05:38 PM | _Jot_ | probably didn't work with their new windows, or they didn't use it anymore, Goodguy
08:05:43 PM | GoodGuy | The seller said she coulnt fion WinXP drivers

08:07:41 PM | Dave-Maydew | Did anyone see Microsofts new tablet fail
08:07:46 PM | Garbee | Fail?
08:07:49 PM | Dave-Maydew | yup
08:07:54 PM | Garbee | What fail?
08:07:55 PM | GoodGuy | Left it in the co-founders hands... Paul Allen iirc
08:08:08 PM | Garbee | No, Paul Ballmer.
08:08:13 PM | Dave-Maydew | failed while they were demonstrating it
08:08:13 PM | GoodGuy | Thats it
08:08:14 PM | Garbee | Paul Allen was gone long ago.
08:08:24 PM | Garbee | Dave-Maydew, That was due to a known bug in the Release Preview.
08:08:33 PM | Dave-Maydew | I put it on Twitter and on my G+
08:08:34 PM | GoodGuy | Paul Allen is the football Seahalks owner
08:08:34 PM | Garbee | It is actually fixed in later non-public builds of the OS.
08:08:43 PM | GoodGuy | made his cash at MS
08:08:48 PM | robgor | goodguy ok didnt realise that, though dont really follow microsoft, seen it on reddit post I think it was

08:09:27 PM | GoodGuy | Gates started a project to get the wealthy to give huge amts of money to charities
08:09:31 PM | Garbee | I havn't had one crash in a long time.
08:09:51 PM | GoodGuy | He got Warren Buffet onboard iirc
08:09:56 PM | Garbee | GoodGuy, Did he start it? I know he signed onto it, but didn't know he started it.

08:11:31 PM | GoodGuy | I read he went to Vietnam and was thought of like a rock star
08:11:34 PM | Garbee | Watch some of his and his wifes TED talks, they are great.
08:11:48 PM | DennisKelley | RobbieF - Great Show!
08:11:48 PM | _Jot_ | I started a charity too, the 'Give money to Jot' charity. But whenever I donate to it, I don't seem to get richer, it's really odd.

08:12:00 PM | Garbee | His wife actually had an AMAZING one on Coca-Cola.
08:12:19 PM | Garbee | Well, it involved them, they weren't actually the *point* of the talk.
08:12:52 PM | GoodGuy | $33,000 or so I think
08:13:26 PM | Dave-Maydew | microsoft tablet epic fail
08:13:28 PM | GoodGuy | He said he wasnt will vast sums to his children.. they have to work hard as he did

08:49:36 PM | Garbee | RobbieF, Could you for the Live show Noty either 1) Turn the close symbol on, or 2) Remove the link to watch live? I think it could be confusing to people who hover over it and only ever have the hand symbol telling them to do something, not knowing if it is to watch live or close.
