07:00:01 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, don't you know it is very rude to point at people!
07:00:01 PM | Dennis_Kelley | No not the point! anything but that!
07:00:21 PM | Garbee | Don't worry RobbieF I have my pizza for the show!

07:01:28 PM | Garbee | agamotto, No, it is lunch leftovers.
07:01:35 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, you can ask her to come every day and help her move to the new house
07:01:36 PM | Garbee | That was the plan though, so I'm not complaining.
07:01:41 PM | Yazid1965 | Christa every Tuesday!!! :)
07:01:42 PM | revdjenk | finished with school? what is your focus?

07:01:56 PM | GWG-tf101 | At JFK Airport
07:02:03 PM | GWG-tf101 | Wondr if I can stream in
07:02:08 PM | Garbee | RobbieF, Even better, remove images and make it all pure CSS3!
07:02:30 PM | agamotto | GWG-tf101, you are at an airport? My condolences
07:02:30 PM | robgor | welcome back christa
07:02:34 PM | Garbee | Hello GWG-tf101!
07:02:39 PM | Rednova | Awesome RobbieF my friend is getting in to that and i told him about this show but he's too busy to join tonight :(
07:03:01 PM | agamotto | Watch them get taxed on it
07:03:13 PM | _Jot_ | hi GWG, don't go running on the runway making airplane-noises
07:03:23 PM | GWG-tf101 | Agamotto, I'm leaving on a jet plane...which alas has no wifi
07:03:40 PM | chrisreich | People of Earth, Greetings.
07:03:46 PM | _Jot_ | hi chrisreich
07:03:57 PM | chrisreich | hey _Jot_
07:04:39 PM | Garbee | TheChrista, When Robbie holds something up, you point to the proper place.
07:04:44 PM | Garbee | ;)
07:04:58 PM | revdjenk | was it good to have a live audience
07:05:20 PM | agamotto | I wonder when Robbie will be featured on CBC's equivalent of 20/20?
07:05:34 PM | _Jot_ | Garbee, you know TheChrista can't point cause RobbieF doesn't hand out pointing-sticks anymore
07:05:44 PM | Dennis_Kelley | a wine unboxing?
07:05:52 PM | Garbee | Dennis_Kelley, No, unbagging.
07:05:57 PM | Garbee | This wine is better than a box.
07:05:59 PM | tordeu | how Canadian
07:06:00 PM | Dennis_Kelley | got be
07:06:03 PM | Dennis_Kelley | *me
07:06:08 PM | revdjenk | Don't let Eric see this segment ... you are always bringing Christa gifts!
07:06:09 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, how many volts does it run on? Does it have a display? How many pixels?
07:06:10 PM | agamotto | Don't forget to give it a sniffy snif.
07:06:13 PM | Rednova | Bet that would be nice on pan cakes
07:06:15 PM | Dennis_Kelley | what about an uncorking?
07:06:28 PM | Drumstick | Evening everyone!
07:06:33 PM | _Jot_ | hi Drumstick
07:06:38 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Hello Drumstick
07:07:15 PM | agamotto | Tweeting is too easy, hence why politicians are using it
07:07:16 PM | chrisreich | greetings New2Linux
07:07:25 PM | eyemeansit | Thanks!
07:07:31 PM | New2Linux | hi
07:07:31 PM | Dennis_Kelley | I am New!
07:07:32 PM | Rednova | RobbieF i'm Tobi. Garbee did not know it was me untill i told him lol
07:07:44 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Sorry!
07:07:45 PM | chrisreich | welcome Dennis_Kelley
07:07:50 PM | Garbee | Rednova, I had an idea but wasn't quite sure so didn't say anything.
07:07:51 PM | revdjenk | I'm here finally and have some questions, for later
07:08:03 PM | ___JimBobMedia | Hi !!
07:08:10 PM | Garbee | Click Race RobbieF?
07:08:10 PM | Dennis_Kelley | with the Maple wine?
07:08:12 PM | Rednova | I thought you would be able to tell by my IP adress? Or cant you see it?
07:08:15 PM | _Jot_ | Yay, I win! What am I going to win RobbieF?
07:08:31 PM | Garbee | Rednova, I can but you IP can change.
07:08:35 PM | revdjenk | Robbie wins 30 host points!
07:08:45 PM | agamotto | We did have some precipitation around here on Saturday... scared the bejeesus out of the locals
07:08:49 PM | chrisreich | I didn't catch a mispronounciation. Sorry RobbieF.
07:09:07 PM | Garbee | Rednova, Plus, I only even look at Robbie's IP on occasion.
07:09:11 PM | tordeu | but my area is ugly... what do i do?
07:09:13 PM | Rednova | Oh i thought there was a IRC feature that would tell you who the person is.
07:09:27 PM | revdjenk | tordeu: make something up!
07:09:27 PM | Rednova | Sorry for the confusion
07:09:29 PM | Garbee | RobbieF, But I need to lick that stamp. :(
07:09:37 PM | agamotto | Rednova, No, this isn't a movie (snicker)
07:09:51 PM | _Jot_ | here they only have stickers, no lickable stamps anymore
07:09:52 PM | tordeu | I can paint a sun all over the postcard....but I do not remember how that looks like.
07:09:54 PM | chrisreich | use self-stick stamps. Don't give away DNA for free!
07:09:55 PM | agamotto | tordeu, throw some paint on it?
07:10:01 PM | Rednova | I watch DIe hard 4 i know all about this stuff!!! haha I joke
07:10:16 PM | Dennis_Kelley | chrisreich - i guess you missed a drink then!
07:10:18 PM | Rednova | That film is so fake
07:10:37 PM | chrisreich | It seems I did Dennis_Kelley!
07:10:49 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Garbee - they are stickers these days!
07:10:54 PM | chrisreich | DRINK!
07:11:00 PM | revdjenk | pleth OR a
07:11:01 PM | Garbee | Rednova, It is actually proper in many ways, especially about the setup fo the grids.
07:11:06 PM | revdjenk | PLETH ora
07:11:26 PM | Garbee | The speed is completely fake though, it would take a long time to hack those systems and they do it in minutes.
07:11:34 PM | tordeu | Robbie just want our post cards to get our DNA. It's a Canadian plot to take over the world.
07:11:35 PM | Rednova | Garbee come on. That film is right in some ways but a bit over the top .. Good film tho :)
07:11:40 PM | chrisreich | I think that mispronouncing was announcers emphasis though.
07:11:50 PM | revdjenk | em PHA sis
07:12:04 PM | agamotto | "Do you think I have a plethora of good manners?"
07:12:07 PM | Garbee | Rednova, Yea, it has a lot of common movie stunts for things, but the idea of the attack is completely doable... Just not as mobile as they make it.
07:12:15 PM | chrisreich | it's tough work, but someone's got to do it.
07:12:28 PM | tordeu | KeePassX
07:12:36 PM | Garbee | LastPass!
07:12:44 PM | tordeu | YAY, I won!
07:12:58 PM | agamotto | I just let Data manage my passwords...
07:13:43 PM | tordeu | I create random 16 digit passwords by only using the # character, nobody will guess THAT!
07:13:59 PM | Rednova | If it does happen Garbee it wont effect us since there is nothing here to ruin. Our phones and internet will go but no cars coming after me and other stuff ... Possible planes since the RAF are flying here all the time :(
07:14:11 PM | revdjenk | I use mhonan no one uses that now!
07:14:20 PM | chrisreich | another alternative password generator is at https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm
07:14:38 PM | Garbee | Rednova, But you are not in the US which is where that scenario is based.
07:14:40 PM | revdjenk | xkcd password generator google it
07:14:47 PM | Garbee | An attack like that would completely cripple us.
07:14:52 PM | agamotto | Rednova, ... until someone figures out the sonic screwdriver...
07:15:31 PM | Garbee | http://www.grc.com/haystack.htm ...Best password method ever.
07:15:51 PM | Rednova | yeah Garbee in the US it would be terrible :( Agamotto i could use with one of them.... since i use screw drivers allot
07:15:51 PM | agamotto | The best password is the one you don't know
07:16:02 PM | revdjenk | the main password is 1234 of course
07:16:08 PM | chrisreich | I just searched xkcd revdjenk, I'll read the web page(s) after the show.
07:16:33 PM | chrisreich | good one agamotto!
07:16:41 PM | Rednova | Oh dear just hit a bug in 12.04
07:16:52 PM | Garbee | Rednova, What else is new?
07:16:53 PM | agamotto | A bug? There are many
07:16:58 PM | revdjenk | what is it Rednova
07:17:06 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, I don't have to guess it, I just download the video and read it from the screen!
07:17:18 PM | GWG-tf101 | I use Lastpass and Keepass
07:17:23 PM | chrisreich | that'll happen Rednova. Nothing is perfect. Except your wife/girlfriend, as the case may be.
07:17:24 PM | tordeu | And BACK UP THAT PASSWORD FILE
07:17:45 PM | Rednova | I minimise something and it says i don't have it open :( Just installed tint2 and it shows up on that so it will work for now
07:18:04 PM | agamotto | tint2?
07:18:08 PM | revdjenk | Question for Christa ? Have you backed up your Mac?
07:18:23 PM | Rednova | Light weight panel :) Used on Crunchbang Agamotto
07:18:26 PM | Garbee | Rednova, I have hit that bug to. It is what made me stop using 12.04.
07:19:00 PM | chrisreich | Is said bug really that serious Garbee?
07:19:00 PM | agamotto | Garbee, What is your flavor of choice, currently?
07:19:14 PM | Garbee | agamotto, Windows 8 RP. I get RTM bits on the 15th.
07:19:19 PM | GoodGuy | RobbieF - The AIOS was on sale for $54 USA on Newegg (with a rebate)
07:19:19 PM | Rednova | I won't give up on it yet Garbee. I only walked away from it since it was crazy slow on my netbook regardless of using fluxbox or xmonad but this laptop can take it if it does not stop i will use session fall back
07:19:20 PM | revdjenk | garbee mint13 shows minimized apps
07:19:25 PM | Garbee | chrisreich, For me doing web dev, it is MAJOR.
07:19:26 PM | chrisreich | DRINK! bet-ah
07:19:40 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, Mint 13 is a childs toy.
07:19:52 PM | _Jot_ | it was orange to remind RobbieF of swimming in carrotjuice
07:19:57 PM | robgor | RobbieF is that keepass program available for android and windows also or just linux?
07:19:58 PM | chrisreich | I understand Garbee. So it's not something that affects a desktop user so much?
07:20:10 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: don't care, been with it since ver 4.0
07:20:15 PM | _Jot_ | robgor, it is available for almost any operating system
07:20:17 PM | Garbee | chrisreich, No, I do web dev locally, that is why it is so major.
07:20:21 PM | Garbee | It completely kills my work.
07:20:35 PM | robgor | ah ok thanks Jot
07:21:05 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, I liked older Mint versions, but what they are doing for Gnome 3 "fixes" I don't like personally. I see it as a childs toy vs an actual machine for me to work with.
07:21:27 PM | agamotto | I still haven't updated my main box... haven't found the new 'it' flavor
07:21:32 PM | revdjenk | that's what makes Linux, Linux! I prefer the cinnamon desktop
07:21:41 PM | chrisreich | Garbee I agree about Mint.
07:21:58 PM | Rednova | Garbee did that bug continue in Unity 2d?
07:22:03 PM | ajamison5579 | TiVo listening to customer suggestions? thats a first
07:22:08 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, And since I couldn't find another distro I like, I have gone back to Win 8. I must say I love Metro (Win 8 UI as it is now called.)
07:22:14 PM | revdjenk | RobbieF: pronounced something correctly!!!
07:22:21 PM | chrisreich | I accept that pronounciation, RobbieF!
07:22:22 PM | Garbee | Rednova, Never tested. Unity 2d will probably be killed soon so no point in testing.
07:22:50 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: you are kidding? wow, the local computer store owner has been very disappointed by it...
07:23:05 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, Most people are, but they really haven't analyzed it very deep.
07:23:08 PM | _Jot_ | robgor, you can of course also go with the original keepass from http://keepass.info
07:23:13 PM | Rednova | True Garbee... Hope the common bugs are gone by 13.04
07:23:17 PM | Garbee | They see it and get revolted by the idea, but honestly, *use* it.
07:23:29 PM | Garbee | Metro barely gets "in the way" as people think and is fast.
07:23:34 PM | robgor | an ok
07:23:46 PM | Garbee | Also, having a *standard* way of doing things is perfect for tech support to explain to people.
07:23:48 PM | GoodGuy | Steam is adding Linux support because they worry Win 8 will be a train wreck
07:24:03 PM | ajamison5579 | Garbee its notcalled metro anymor
07:24:07 PM | Garbee | GoodGuy, Also for many other business reasons, like Steam can't work in Metro.
07:24:13 PM | chrisreich | I would expect bugs to be fixed in 12.04 over time rather than expect a new version to be the fix. But I'm a LTS guy, so what do I know.
07:24:15 PM | Rednova | People are judging 8 too quick just like they judged gnome 3 and unity before they were finished
07:24:17 PM | Garbee | ajamison5579, MS is afraid of calling it that, I'm not.
07:24:33 PM | GoodGuy | For enough $$$$ they make things work
07:24:45 PM | ajamison5579 | I want to try Win 8 but must not loose my game access
07:24:49 PM | RobbieF | http://cat5.tv/hdmi51
07:24:51 PM | Rednova | Unity is not there yet unfortunately
07:24:54 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: yes it is faster ... but the flipping back and forth between "metro" and 7-style desktop in the services like in help is disconcerting
07:24:55 PM | Garbee | GoodGuy, No, MS won't. It is a security risk to let Steam work in Metro.
07:25:14 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, Ha! Honestly, you don't do it *that* much, and it isn't disconcerting once you figure it out.
07:25:30 PM | GoodGuy | I am not a big gamer, so I'll try Win8
07:25:43 PM | GoodGuy | Especially for the cheap upgrade offer
07:25:46 PM | Garbee | right now, I can't actually do any work *in* Metro, so it is kinda pointless.
07:25:51 PM | Rednova | RobbieF how do you have all this time????
07:25:51 PM | smittysmit | Team Viewer is AWESOME
07:25:53 PM | Garbee | MetroTwit for Win 8 is awesome though.
07:25:56 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: hee hee
07:26:03 PM | chrisreich | I've been testing so many windows managers I had to take a Linux vacation recently to clear my head. Currently liking icewm a lot here. Awesome and xmonad are still interesting, though.
07:26:13 PM | robgor | RobbieF make sure people have the latest teamview apparently it has a vulanability
07:26:25 PM | ajamison5579 | Garbee steam will not work in metro? If so then def staying on win7 half my games are bought through steam
07:26:38 PM | Garbee | ajamison5579, It will still work in the desktop of Win8.
07:26:39 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: and the news today about office 2013 having some of its features dropped from the RT version
07:26:43 PM | robgor | which is fixed in latest version
07:26:59 PM | robgor | RobbieF which is fixed in latest version
07:27:07 PM | Garbee | They won't have an actual metro app for Steam since other games can't work in there since it won't have Win32 API access which steam and other apps require. Sandboxing for safety kills the possibility.
07:27:33 PM | revdjenk | ajamison5579: steam will work in win8, that is not Gabe's problem, it is with the possiblity of being locked out of the app store
07:27:41 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, Where did you see that?
07:28:12 PM | ajamison5579 | ok i am so confused now
07:28:18 PM | revdjenk | it was in either verge or theregister
07:28:22 PM | _Jot_ | wait, what, the category5 website has functionality? And I thought it was just pretty pictures
07:28:42 PM | revdjenk | _Jot_: pretty until that bald guy shows up :)
07:28:56 PM | _Jot_ | wait, what, there is a bald guy on the website?
07:29:04 PM | ajamison5579 | if I upgrade to win 8 can I play my games??
07:29:07 PM | revdjenk | hee hee
07:29:25 PM | revdjenk | Question for Christa ? Have you backed up your Mac?
07:29:25 PM | revdjenk | Question for Robbie ? I am having a sluggish mouse movement in the initial few minutes of booting... Linux Mint 13 64bit Lenovo t400 ? any ideas?
07:29:41 PM | Garbee | ajamison5579, Here is the basic gist of it. Only the Desktop App in Windows 8 has access to the old Win32 API (and also only on x86_64). Steam requires that and so do games. So Steam will only work in the desktop since it *can't* function as a Metro App (since Apps don't have Win32 API access.)
07:30:16 PM | Garbee | ajamison5579, Yes, you can still play you games just fine.
07:30:22 PM | Garbee | Just not *in* Metro.
07:30:23 PM | ajamison5579 | ok
07:30:27 PM | chrisreich | TheChrista is that a sweater around your neck? Scarf? It's working as a fashion statement.
07:30:49 PM | agamotto | It might be a 'pashmina.'
07:31:06 PM | chrisreich | LOL @ RobbieF. Good one!
07:31:07 PM | _Jot_ | chrisreich, it has the batteries, so they are easily replacable
07:31:10 PM | agamotto | I was thinking Sony myself...
07:31:17 PM | ajamison5579 | Robbief RBS = RIM banking services
07:31:27 PM | Garbee | Win 8 UI is it apparently.
07:31:29 PM | Rednova | Windows 8 Web page Edition RobbieF!!
07:31:30 PM | Garbee | :(
07:31:46 PM | agamotto | "Windows 8 UI.... boxy, not sexy."
07:31:48 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: Windows 8 Style UI
07:32:04 PM | chrisreich | sorry _Jot_, what has batteries?
07:32:20 PM | _Jot_ | chrisreich, TheChrista of course.
07:32:33 PM | Garbee | RobbieF, The "blocky" UI actually isn't that bad. It is the fact that no apps exist yet that someone can actually do work in.
07:33:00 PM | GoodGuy | It is HUGE
07:33:01 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: which is part of the question, why release it if it isn't ready?
07:33:20 PM | GoodGuy | If anything can make Linux grow, that is it
07:33:23 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, They have apps they just haven't released to the store yet.
07:33:31 PM | chrisreich | I want to see Dancing Demon on a linux terminal. Anyone remember Dancing Demon?
07:33:33 PM | Garbee | I can ask the same question of Canonical with Unity.
07:33:37 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: so we are told
07:34:03 PM | GoodGuy | nope
07:34:04 PM | agamotto | No, but I can sing 'Dancing Queen.'
07:34:05 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, It is a catch 22. They need to get devs interested, but devs won't dev unless there is a userbase. How do you get the user-base? By putting it on systems.
07:34:23 PM | Garbee | Canonical did not *need* to do it due to a catch 22 though, so they fail the test.
07:34:35 PM | GoodGuy | So can Abba.. to the tune of millios of $$$$ :-)
07:34:45 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: it would have been nice to have given the devs the sdk a head of time...
07:35:11 PM | GoodGuy | I heard they were the number two biggest earner in Sweden at the height of their popularity
07:35:14 PM | Rednova | I am with Garbee on that one. Dell are shipping laptops with unity now and its going to explode in peoples faces!
07:35:16 PM | Garbee | MS also needs to do this. Otherwise what would Win 8 be? Just updates to the Win 7 core which almost no one would want and would put them 3 or 4 *more* years behind on development which would kill them. This gives them a chance to live and build a great ecosystem (which is doing fine btw.)
07:35:17 PM | _Jot_ | 7 or 8 canadian? that's like 3000 dollars american, right?
07:35:25 PM | GoodGuy | That was impressed
07:35:31 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, Devs had the SDK for a year!
07:35:37 PM | Garbee | That is plenty of time for them.
07:35:40 PM | agamotto | CAD is usually around 10% on top of USD
07:35:40 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: correct, ms is WAY behind
07:35:48 PM | GoodGuy | Mo Netflix on Linux right?
07:35:56 PM | Dennis_Kelley | and going to school!
07:36:00 PM | ajamison5579 | Sliders is (or was) an awesome series
07:36:01 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: but didn't some of the background tools change?
07:36:01 PM | Garbee | GoodGuy, Not yet.
07:36:06 PM | _Jot_ | TheChrista, RobbieF is laughing at 'working'
07:36:06 PM | agamotto | GoodGuy, Nope, we are all theives and pirates, remember?
07:36:13 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, They added API calls.. Hundreds actually.
07:36:18 PM | GoodGuy | Hope they get it someday
07:36:27 PM | Garbee | It was always in the works, but that really won't affect major apps yet.
07:36:42 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: sorry... I left MS over 6 years ago... won't win me over
07:36:44 PM | GoodGuy | I actually use BitTorrent for d/l Linux
07:37:03 PM | TheChrista | I know jot! If it weren't for this delicious wine sitting beside me, I'd be extremely offended and sad
07:37:18 PM | Rednova | Might compile a new Kernal in a bit and see if Unity gets better it helped on one of my PCs
07:37:18 PM | _Jot_ | revdjenk 'win ME', nice joke
07:37:25 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, It isn't targeted at you. Obviously you have some idea of computing since you are here. Win 8 is for the *average* user and the tech support guy who wants easy explinations for things.
07:37:44 PM | revdjenk | win8 won't be for the average person!!!
07:37:45 PM | Garbee | Rednova, Kernel updates shouldn't affect Unity at all.
07:38:01 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, You say so, but we don't know yet. I can honestly say, it will be *better* than what we have now.
07:38:05 PM | revdjenk | _Jot_: you are quick!
07:38:09 PM | Garbee | Whether people chose to belive it or not.
07:38:22 PM | tordeu | I always thought that Win is for the tech guys, that's why they leave the system wide open.
07:38:25 PM | Rednova | If it does not Garbee i will use session fall back and keep the updates coming in and see if it improves in a week
07:38:29 PM | GWG-tf101 | Off now
07:38:33 PM | GoodGuy | Too lazy to rload my pc
07:38:35 PM | Rednova | Might have been better staying with Debian
07:38:37 PM | Garbee | I can tell people exactly how to print from any Metro app, it is *the same* for all of them. I can't do that in Deskto apps.
07:38:58 PM | tordeu | You mean, file>print?
07:39:03 PM | agamotto | gwg-TF101 E
07:39:10 PM | Garbee | tordeu, Not every app conforms to that.
07:39:13 PM | agamotto | enjoy your flight
07:39:22 PM | Dennis_Kelley | its not actually there, like HAIR!
07:39:40 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: yet, the browser will be different in "the desktop formerly known as metro" and the desktop! Crazy
07:39:46 PM | tordeu | Ok, but it's most at least. If people can't find the print button, they are doomed anyway.
07:39:52 PM | maxwell6307 | i love the gimp
07:40:10 PM | ajamison5579 | Robbief can us faulicaly challenged individuals put realitic looking hair on our bald heads?
07:40:17 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, But people shouldn't use the desktop browser. They should stick to the safe Metro browser.
07:40:18 PM | agamotto | 'print button?' Whatever happened to CTRL-P?
07:40:19 PM | _Jot_ | no RobbieF, not those funny pictures from the members foto gallery
07:40:29 PM | Garbee | The desktop IE is mainly there for users who *know* they need to go there to do something.
07:40:30 PM | revdjenk | gimp in one window is super, too
07:40:45 PM | Garbee | agamotto, Once again, not all apps conform to that de' facto standard.
07:40:47 PM | agamotto | ajamison5579, No, because the hair remedies will make you sterile
07:41:00 PM | tordeu | agamotto, The average user does not use his keyboard. Not even for copy/paste. They HAVE to go through the menu.
07:41:04 PM | ajamison5579 | lol
07:41:15 PM | agamotto | Garbee, Then why use them? chuckle
07:41:26 PM | Guest_8847 | I could never get Metro to work in VB
07:41:26 PM | ajamison5579 | I know i spelled faulical wrong
07:41:29 PM | Garbee | Also, Chrome and Firefox can have plugins, so if people want they can install one of those and use their Metro version.
07:41:31 PM | ajamison5579 | so sue me
07:41:35 PM | chrisreich | I prefer keyboard commands, but tordeu is right.
07:41:38 PM | agamotto | I must be really wierd then for preferring keyboard shortcuts
07:41:48 PM | Guest_8847 | metro = win8
07:41:59 PM | Garbee | agamotto, Because some programs people use for whatever reason. Not everyone can make a good program choice (my dad is a perfect example of that.)
07:42:09 PM | chrisreich | my carpal tunnel syndrome likes keyboard commands over mouse manipulation.
07:42:09 PM | ajamison5579 | Metro = the boxes in Win8
07:42:18 PM | GoodGuy | follicle
07:42:40 PM | agamotto | chrisreich, same with arthritis most days.... my rodent is on its back
07:42:41 PM | Garbee | Guest_8847, Well, VB doesn't officially support Win 8 for drivers yet, so no wonder it may not work perfectly. Try again when full support is out.
07:42:42 PM | revdjenk | Guest_8847: actually "metro" is no more... MS has to rename it because of dispute with trademark
07:42:47 PM | Dennis_Kelley | easy to do with less hair!
07:42:59 PM | Dennis_Kelley | or if you had hair!
07:43:01 PM | GoodGuy | Sued by Boxee if the call it that ajamison5579 lol
07:43:10 PM | chrisreich | informal poll - what is everyone's preferred terminal emulator?
07:43:28 PM | revdjenk | scalp- pull
07:43:36 PM | Mathman47 | Big Head Robbie F.
07:43:41 PM | agamotto | Yakukatse...
07:43:49 PM | GoodGuy | terminal
07:43:51 PM | revdjenk | nice RobbieF
07:44:06 PM | tordeu | They can just buy Boxee; they could not do that with Metro
07:44:11 PM | ajamison5579 | Goodguy ok its the screen with all of the square or rectangle looking elements that are enaled for tactile responses
07:44:14 PM | tordeu | i use terminator
07:44:19 PM | ajamison5579 | try sueing the for that
07:44:20 PM | GoodGuy | terminator is popular also
07:44:37 PM | Garbee | I just use an actual virtual terminal or whatever is built into the DE I use.
07:44:41 PM | Garbee | No real need for anything else.
07:44:49 PM | GoodGuy | Try selling it called that lol
07:45:07 PM | revdjenk | smaller
07:45:15 PM | chrisreich | agamotto I hear ya. Arthritis has to suck for computer use. And guitar playing.
07:45:24 PM | revdjenk | smaller - ize it
07:45:35 PM | GoodGuy | and sleeping chrisreich :-(
07:45:48 PM | _Jot_ | I would hire TheChrista to do it properly in photoshop and not go through all the trouble
07:46:03 PM | ajamison5579 | goodguy with a dislaimer that says shapes may changewithout notice so do not be surprised when your square becomes a circle
07:46:06 PM | revdjenk | _Jot_: !!!
07:46:15 PM | chrisreich | GoodGuy you bet. Sometimes I prefer to sleep on the sofa to give my arms some releif.
07:46:21 PM | GoodGuy | lol... lawyer wars
07:46:46 PM | chrisreich | These are good days to be a lawyer.
07:46:58 PM | GoodGuy | I have no idea what I did to my back or hip, but the pain has been bad for several weeks
07:47:05 PM | chrisreich | Drink!
07:47:11 PM | revdjenk | me too, GoodGuy
07:47:15 PM | agamotto | Or, you could just make a low-vision version of the page/site.
07:47:17 PM | ajamison5579 | I know Metro can be called Squares and Rectangles simple enouh
07:47:20 PM | ajamison5579 | enough
07:47:22 PM | GoodGuy | Gets a little better and then hurts like heck
07:47:56 PM | GoodGuy | Maybe the weather is aggravation arthritis
07:48:08 PM | GoodGuy | aggravating
07:48:15 PM | agamotto | GoodGuy, it usually does
07:48:16 PM | chrisreich | GoodGuy changes in weather can be brutal for me. Could it be weather changing affecting your back?
07:48:54 PM | GoodGuy | I took a shower last night and suddenly I was in so much pain I could barely walk
07:49:12 PM | chrisreich | ooo - sorry to hear that. Better now?
07:49:15 PM | GoodGuy | Debated going to the ER, but they never do anything
07:49:16 PM | ajamison5579 | Thechrista can someone who does not look and digital images all day tell the difference
07:49:17 PM | Garbee | Wow, GitHub has gotten on my nerves.
07:49:31 PM | GoodGuy | Doesnt hurt near that much today
07:49:32 PM | revdjenk | oooooh
07:49:33 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, want it! send me!
07:49:44 PM | Garbee | ajamison5579, Metro is much more than 90 degree angled shapes.
07:49:55 PM | chrisreich | ER has helped me twice with unbearable pain. I'm in New York. Are you in Canada?
07:49:56 PM | Garbee | RobbieF, How was the end of you vacation?
07:49:58 PM | _Jot_ | I have a question! How can I get that card?
07:49:58 PM | revdjenk | RobbieF: once again, ruining the queen's english
07:50:07 PM | revdjenk | Question for Christa ? Have you backed up your Mac?
07:50:07 PM | revdjenk | Question for Robbie ? I am having a sluggish mouse movement in the initial few minutes of booting... Linux Mint 13 64bit Lenovo t400 ? any ideas?
07:50:09 PM | GoodGuy | Michigan
07:50:15 PM | ajamison5579 | Robbief paper cards are so not a green way to go what about digital e-cards
07:50:44 PM | chrisreich | not socialized medicine then in Michigan. I would suggest going to ER when you can't take it.
07:51:02 PM | GoodGuy | My spinal surgeon doesnt see patients anymore, only does surgery
07:51:04 PM | Rednova | Debian or Ubuntu??? Like Ubuntu for Unity and HUD but like debian for stable and speed
07:51:05 PM | ajamison5579 | Garbee i kow I was poking fun at the whole Metro is not metro thing
07:51:38 PM | revdjenk | ajamison5579: the desktop formerly known as metro
07:51:41 PM | Garbee | RobbieF, And breaking MySQL queries!
07:51:43 PM | GoodGuy | He has some doc who prescreens and sends patients to be sliced and diced lol
07:52:02 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, Actually that statement is completely false. Metro was never a desktop.
07:52:07 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, you can just select all of it at once by shift+click the first and then the last, and then delete it all at once, instead of one of the time and take all day
07:52:12 PM | _Jot_ | all those emails
07:52:13 PM | revdjenk | Question for Christa ? Have you backed up your Mac?
07:52:13 PM | revdjenk | Question for Robbie ? I am having a sluggish mouse movement in the initial few minutes of booting... Linux Mint 13 64bit Lenovo t400 ? any ideas?
07:52:15 PM | Garbee | RobbieF, Nothing major really, I just had a bad MySQL experience lately.
07:52:29 PM | agamotto | GoodGuy, Taking a warm/hot shower made it worse?
07:52:40 PM | chrisreich | Question about the new studio - Is it a pro facility RobbieF? Do you own it?
07:52:41 PM | GoodGuy | are you running an anti-virus?
07:52:43 PM | revdjenk | good choice TheChrista
07:52:57 PM | revdjenk | since the mat honan case
07:52:59 PM | GoodGuy | It was bending down to wash my feet I guessed
07:53:01 PM | Rednova | What has your experience been with 12.04 compared to Debian RobbieF?
07:53:26 PM | agamotto | GoodGuy, ahhhh. I would be scared if warmth made the arthritis worse
07:53:35 PM | GoodGuy | I would also
07:53:43 PM | Garbee | RobbieF, Or your optical drive is borked and it will write bad data and you don't know unless you really test the backup. Which most don't do.
07:53:52 PM | _Jot_ | note to self: detonate hidden EMP-device before RobbieF has the time to move out
07:53:54 PM | GoodGuy | Been to physical therapy numerous times
07:54:00 PM | agamotto | RobbieF, DVDs are useless without hardware to read them
07:54:21 PM | Garbee | Carbonite is easy.
07:54:21 PM | tordeu | RobbieF, good idea, rsync for Christa
07:54:24 PM | chrisreich | TheChrista I approve of your backup method. I do the same thing. Automated imaging of the system drive daily to an external firewire drive.
07:54:25 PM | _Jot_ | for law-people reading this: that was just a joke, there is no such device
07:54:30 PM | Garbee | I am trying to get my dad to get us a Carbonite plan.
07:54:36 PM | ajamison5579 | 100's of years
07:54:37 PM | GoodGuy | RobbieF, - share a Pogoplus with TheChrista
07:54:45 PM | agamotto | Garbee, I thought that testing/verifying was what made backing up such a pain
07:54:59 PM | Garbee | agamotto, Most don't do either. They just "backup" and hope it works.
07:55:06 PM | agamotto | RobbieF, You don't re-use them as coasters?
07:55:22 PM | Garbee | I currently "backup" the VPS we have but am developing a way to test them.
07:55:42 PM | Rednova | My dog would love flopies haha
07:56:18 PM | agamotto | My backups usually take about 2 hours due to the verification
07:56:24 PM | GoodGuy | We used to eat at local Thai restaurant... they had several children using hair driers to peel off AOL stickers to resell floppies
07:56:40 PM | GoodGuy | Kids worked in the back room
07:56:46 PM | Garbee | RobbieF, You *can* get it back, it is just super expensive compared to a HDD.
07:56:47 PM | _Jot_ | yeah, a backup is only a backup if you test restoring it
07:56:58 PM | chrisreich | my daily updates take from 10 to 20 minutes, usually I'm sleeping when it happens at 5AM
07:56:59 PM | Garbee | correction, Compared to the *worst* HDD crash.
07:57:04 PM | GoodGuy | It did happen if you watched CBS' Jericho show
07:57:35 PM | Rednova | My HD has been clicking each time i power down yet no crashes or anything yet. Its been like this for months ....
07:57:44 PM | agamotto | GoodGuy, Which brings up the question: How do you 'harden' a DVD player/recorder to be useful after such an event?
07:57:51 PM | Rednova | Why wont it just go? lol
07:58:00 PM | GoodGuy | One of the hero characters had a hardened laptop
07:58:06 PM | revdjenk | Rednova: you are backing up, right?
07:58:08 PM | Garbee | Rednova, Your drive is stubborn.
07:58:16 PM | GoodGuy | Have to be a govt agent :-)
07:58:19 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, I learned with him that is a question best not asked.
07:58:25 PM | Rednova | Revdjenk i dont store stuff on this HD :)
07:58:29 PM | revdjenk | Rednova: newegg has some great prices on ssd hd
07:58:42 PM | agamotto | TheChrista, Most users arent
07:58:43 PM | revdjenk | Rednova: hee hee.... lol
07:58:44 PM | Rednova | Sure is Garbee! Revdjenk i will be getting a SSD tomorrow :)
07:59:17 PM | GoodGuy | a fire means all my junk is gone and a very happy Mrs GoodGuy lol
07:59:22 PM | Garbee | RobbieF, What happens if we die?!
07:59:25 PM | revdjenk | yay Rednova
07:59:33 PM | GoodGuy | Happy about the junk cleaned up anyway
07:59:40 PM | Rednova | Most of my stuff is stored in the cloud :D
07:59:40 PM | chrisreich | It's all about risk management.
07:59:44 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, you bought me a dog? Wow, that's nice
07:59:55 PM | Garbee | My dog as learned not to knock stuff off my desk.
08:00:12 PM | Garbee | Really? Cat5 is getting Interns to torture?
08:00:12 PM | revdjenk | kind of sad, happy for future
08:00:22 PM | Dennis_Kelley | RobbieF - you will have to have a lot of backstage passes
08:00:26 PM | Drumstick | Thanks RobbieF!
08:00:41 PM | Rednova | Thanks Christa and RobbieF Great show as allways :)
08:00:42 PM | chrisreich | All my best to everyone.
08:00:46 PM | revdjenk | thanks RobbieF thanks TheChrista
08:01:00 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Thank You RobbieF and Christa

08:01:11 PM | _Jot_ | Remember if the wine was as good as it seems TheChrista, we'll ask :)
08:01:12 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Cool Beans to All!
08:01:14 PM | TheChrista | thanks drumstick
08:01:20 PM | agamotto | GoodGuy, Do you eat peppers regularly?
08:01:23 PM | maxwell6307 | later all
08:01:29 PM | GoodGuy | Nope
08:01:30 PM | Rednova | I was wondering why my laptop is lagging ..... I did a dist-upgrade just now lol
08:01:44 PM | revdjenk | nice...
08:01:46 PM | GoodGuy | Our son is really big into Peppers though
08:02:07 PM | agamotto | GoodGuy, even the milder ones help with arthritis
08:02:32 PM | agamotto | they help to cut down on the inflammation response
08:02:32 PM | invinciblemutant | yo
08:02:33 PM | invinciblemutant | i am back
08:02:39 PM | _Jot_ | welcome back invinciblemutant
08:02:40 PM | GoodGuy | I used to eat Thai fairly often and didnt notice any health benefits
08:02:58 PM | invinciblemutant | Thai --> spicy
08:03:07 PM | agamotto | GoodGuy, No, not chili peppers, the bell kind
08:03:16 PM | TheChrista | hope everyone had fun tonight. I promise I'll be back more often now that school is over soon
08:03:21 PM | revdjenk | GoodGuy: the actual term for hot "peppers" is chile
08:03:29 PM | GoodGuy | I use them diced in some dishes
08:03:41 PM | revdjenk | TheChrista: YAY
08:03:44 PM | invinciblemutant | sweet capcicums
08:04:02 PM | agamotto | I use a rub-on/in called capzacin that is made from peppers, does wonders for my wrists
08:04:04 PM | invinciblemutant | that is not thai's
08:04:15 PM | revdjenk | TheChrista: are you finished completely with school? what is your major?
08:05:03 PM | GoodGuy | I know revdjenk
08:05:11 PM | GoodGuy | brbias
08:05:36 PM | invinciblemutant | i gonna get a monitor for myself
08:05:44 PM | agamotto | Well, I need to go. Sadly, I have to be at work early in the morning
08:05:55 PM | revdjenk | bye agamotto
08:05:55 PM | invinciblemutant | suffering squeezing myself with my laptop
08:06:02 PM | invinciblemutant | any suggestion
08:06:10 PM | invinciblemutant | aiming for a 24 in
08:06:24 PM | revdjenk | invinciblemutant: do you mean you are looking for larger screen to attach to laptop?
08:06:28 PM | revdjenk | wow
08:06:37 PM | TheChrista | revdjenk, this is my second go-around with schooll
08:06:42 PM | invinciblemutant | revdjenk: yes, to extend my laptop screen
08:06:44 PM | revdjenk | will be big change, but they have really come down in price invinciblemutant
08:06:47 PM | TheChrista | I initially went through for Graphic Design, which was my major
08:07:26 PM | TheChrista | and then after working in the field for 3 years found out that if I wanted to really be able to offer my clients everything, that I needed to advance my skills.
08:07:38 PM | TheChrista | So I've been taking night classes for the past year and a half in web development
08:07:48 PM | invinciblemutant | Yea, so that i can really sit straight working in front of the computer
08:07:55 PM | GoodGuy | I have a question... if you applied for a job and they said take a 1 1/2 hour online test, what would you do?
08:08:15 PM | GoodGuy | No promise they'll even call you back etc
08:08:20 PM | invinciblemutant | i used to sit straight typing, but with the laptop screen, it is difficult
08:08:26 PM | revdjenk | TheChrista: great! Have a woman in my congregation doing web design for some rather big corporations... she really enjoys it... headaches and all!
08:08:34 PM | invinciblemutant | sit straight up
08:08:37 PM | TheChrista | Depends on the job
08:08:56 PM | revdjenk | TheChrista: amen!
08:09:22 PM | revdjenk | TheChrista: and the more you know, the more you can pick your battles and choose your future
08:09:24 PM | TheChrista | Ya I've found that I really like it. It's kind of like an on-going puzzle
08:09:37 PM | TheChrista | It involves constant problem solving which I really like
08:09:47 PM | RobbieF | Thanks all :)
08:09:50 PM | GoodGuy | Don't know if they job pays great or not since they dont usually discuss pay rates until a position is offered
08:09:51 PM | TheChrista | But I still really enjoy print design, so I don't think I could give up either
08:09:53 PM | revdjenk | TheChrista: which is exactly what she has been doing!
08:10:07 PM | invinciblemutant | any suggestion? brand or model
08:10:08 PM | revdjenk | TheChrista: you mean the textile design hee hee
08:10:19 PM | RobbieF | Come now!
08:10:20 PM | RobbieF | lol
08:10:24 PM | revdjenk | hee hee
08:10:33 PM | invinciblemutant | RobbieF: any suggestion for a good 24in monitor
08:10:34 PM | TheChrista | well she sounds like a fantastic person, as all us designers are....naturally
08:10:34 PM | revdjenk | oh, you still here RobbieF ?
08:10:49 PM | RobbieF | I'm here, yes.
08:11:02 PM | revdjenk | invinciblemutant: can't go wrong with samsung, lg, viewsonic
08:11:07 PM | GoodGuy | I just bought a Dell ST2421L 24 in LED
08:11:15 PM | RobbieF | good going :)
08:11:16 PM | _Jot_ | wait, RobbieF got a word right this time? Do the record-people know?
08:11:21 PM | RobbieF | that must be nice for watching online tv!
08:11:27 PM | revdjenk | RobbieF: he stumbled out quite a while ago
08:11:29 PM | GoodGuy | Havent opened it yet, so I cant says how good or bad it is
08:11:29 PM | Garbee | RobbieF, Getting authenticated for an SSL cert is a pain.
08:11:47 PM | RobbieF | yes, it sure is
08:11:49 PM | GoodGuy | reviews seemed ok and it had one feature I really wanted badly
08:11:51 PM | RobbieF | gotcha goodguy
08:11:57 PM | Garbee | I got my dad *personally* identified at StartSSL today, getting the business identified tomorrow so I can start making Certs.
08:11:59 PM | revdjenk | GoodGuy: is that the hires one?
08:12:03 PM | invinciblemutant | I need a good screen to compile my thesis
08:12:03 PM | RobbieF | the studio has a 24" for the audience to be able to see.
08:12:11 PM | GoodGuy | Most monitors auto-switch inputs like it or not
08:12:13 PM | Garbee | The good thing is, we get identified and then we can make all the certs we want.
08:12:23 PM | invinciblemutant | i need thing to be side by side
08:12:33 PM | GoodGuy | I has an old, clunky FreeNAS PC on the floor
08:12:43 PM | revdjenk | invinciblemutant: now, I understand!
08:12:45 PM | GoodGuy | when I reboot, it loses the video signal
08:12:50 PM | invinciblemutant | my 13 inch laptop screen is too small, and i need to squeeze myself, lower my body to see the screen
08:13:01 PM | invinciblemutant | that i not a good postul to work
08:13:07 PM | GoodGuy | By the tiime I can get it tp switch back, I miss some screen output
08:13:13 PM | revdjenk | you do know that laptop screens can be angled back? hee hee
08:13:27 PM | GoodGuy | Or lay laptop on books
08:13:39 PM | revdjenk | or get a stand-up desk
08:13:41 PM | invinciblemutant | angled back?
08:13:56 PM | invinciblemutant | stand up desk, then i will working standing the whole day
08:14:00 PM | Garbee | I think my dad thinks SSL Certs are a scam since they require so much personal ID to get. I had to explain to him how crappy the system is before he realized it was necessary.
08:14:07 PM | revdjenk | think of your great posture!
08:14:12 PM | GoodGuy | My wife lays a regular CRT on some square plastic case to raise the height
08:14:44 PM | invinciblemutant | GoodGuy: how about a laptop
08:14:49 PM | invinciblemutant | ?
08:14:56 PM | GoodGuy | It didnt stop Iran Garbee .. IIrc they bought a certificate company
08:15:25 PM | GoodGuy | and corrupted it to trick protesters
08:16:00 PM | GoodGuy | They shut down the company, but probably didnt help the protestors after being discovered
08:16:06 PM | Garbee | GoodGuy, I think that is getting too close to politics, so lets kill that line of conversation there please.
08:16:18 PM | GoodGuy | Sure Garbee
08:16:24 PM | Garbee | Thank you.
08:16:52 PM | GoodGuy | I only brought it up to illustrate even certificates arent foolproof
08:17:06 PM | GoodGuy | anyone could do that with enough money
08:17:49 PM | _Jot_ | you don't pay for certificates, but for verification
08:17:56 PM | _Jot_ | at least, that's how it is supposed to be
08:18:28 PM | GoodGuy | I know, but the certificate authority must be trusted or it doesnt mean much
08:18:35 PM | invinciblemutant | it is important to get the details right for cert
08:18:54 PM | invinciblemutant | i appeciate the cert issuance for doing that
08:18:54 PM | GoodGuy | They could verify Porky Pig is Joe Blow
08:19:01 PM | Garbee | Here is the problem. we have thousands of trusted CA's.
08:19:19 PM | Garbee | How can we "trust" that many organizations. each with possibly hundreds of employees.
08:19:26 PM | Garbee | ? for the question up there^^
08:19:40 PM | GoodGuy | I thought any one authorized could issue a valid one recognized by all
08:19:42 PM | Garbee | Web Of trust is a good idea for fixing the solution.
08:20:02 PM | GoodGuy | assuming the cert authority is trustworthy
08:20:03 PM | Garbee | GoodGuy, That is how it works.
08:20:09 PM | invinciblemutant | we trust CA, and we know the cert owner is resposible
08:20:19 PM | GoodGuy | Enough money and you can own a company
08:20:28 PM | Garbee | invinciblemutant, No we don't know the owner is responsible, that is one problem.
08:20:34 PM | GoodGuy | It will be revoked if you misuse it
08:20:42 PM | Garbee | Also, we don't *need* to trust all CA's, that is one problem there are **too** many.
08:20:47 PM | GoodGuy | But by them a lot of damage could be done
08:21:06 PM | invinciblemutant | if you use it to conduct crime under you ownership, do you think you can run away?
08:21:18 PM | _Jot_ | actually, everbody chooses themselfs who to trust and who not to trust. Just usually people let others, like the OS or the browser handle it
08:21:21 PM | invinciblemutant | that is why personal details is important
08:21:42 PM | Garbee | invinciblemutant, As if I can't spoof personal details.
08:22:01 PM | invinciblemutant | yea, i trust CA has done this to avoid spoofing
08:22:03 PM | Garbee | tbh, everything I handed StartSSL today I could have easily forged.
08:22:23 PM | Garbee | Except the passport photo's, those would have taken a while or I would have had to come up with another photo-ID to spoof.
08:22:25 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Does anyone do laptop repair with Windows 7 and xp? what tools do you use to clean up the hard drive?
08:22:32 PM | GoodGuy | any wealthy organization could "invest" in a certificate authority
08:22:36 PM | Garbee | Dennis_Kelley, Define "clean-up".
08:23:01 PM | GoodGuy | Use that power to do what they wanted and realize eventually auth will be revoked
08:23:15 PM | _Jot_ | I usually let the windows 7 installation wipe the harddrive and do a new install
08:23:31 PM | GoodGuy | By then they would hope they accomplished their goal in buying it to begin with
08:24:06 PM | Dennis_Kelley | malware, virus, junk
08:24:13 PM | GoodGuy | TeraByte's CopyWip is free
08:24:19 PM | GoodGuy | Wipe
08:25:00 PM | Garbee | Dennis_Kelley, A MS Windows OEM disc to re-install from.
08:25:05 PM | GoodGuy | Personally I wouldn't trust any virus removal to catch all of them
08:25:14 PM | Garbee | Malware and viruses are cause for instant re-install to me now.
08:25:18 PM | invinciblemutant | Dennis_Kelley: If you have a branded machine, there must be a recovery partition that you can recover everything, but you will lose all data
08:25:25 PM | GoodGuy | Its the one they dont know about that would get you
08:25:33 PM | Garbee | invinciblemutant, "Recovery Partition" = bad. They could be infected at that point.
08:25:55 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: just heard the new name is: volte haven't verified it, but checking
08:25:59 PM | invinciblemutant | Garbee: if it is an ghost image, then may be not?
08:25:59 PM | GoodGuy | Same with System Restore points
08:26:00 PM | Garbee | You want *external* media that had either not been inserted into that machine since infection or be optical storage since it is read-only.
08:26:28 PM | Garbee | invinciblemutant, *anything* that is on that disc itself is now untrusted.
08:26:29 PM | invinciblemutant | I know some companies have ghost image in their recovery part
08:26:39 PM | Dennis_Kelley | so i use super anti spyware, malwarebytes
08:26:46 PM | Garbee | You can break into ghost images.
08:26:47 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: sorry Metro PCS is now VoitLE
08:26:58 PM | GoodGuy | Maybe if you took a checksum of the recovery partition and knew it
08:27:09 PM | Dennis_Kelley | you think if i use multiple virus software, i will have a better chance of getting more
08:27:10 PM | Garbee | GoodGuy, It would need to be one pretty deep checksum.
08:27:11 PM | invinciblemutant | Garbee: depends on what has happened
08:27:11 PM | GoodGuy | I would probably trust it then
08:27:31 PM | invinciblemutant | Garbee: you feel so unsecure
08:27:39 PM | Garbee | invinciblemutant, Doesn't really matter. Any malicious code can possibly attack another partition. So it is marked as untrusted.
08:27:42 PM | invinciblemutant | you probably unplug your network cable
08:27:43 PM | GoodGuy | Usually they arent that large..... no user software and files yet
08:27:56 PM | invinciblemutant | LOL
08:28:14 PM | Garbee | invinciblemutant, I don't unplug my cables. I know how to protect myself. But I really don't feel like digging through other people's systems finding malware anymore.
08:28:24 PM | GoodGuy | I saw a couple Linux articles where they calced a MD5Sum off a CD
08:28:25 PM | Garbee | I just run a scan, see some bad stuff then recommend a backup and re-install.
08:28:43 PM | GoodGuy | I md5 check the iso before burning
08:28:56 PM | Garbee | GoodGuy, Yea, md5 sums on a CD are always doable, especially in Linux since everything is just another file.
08:29:05 PM | GoodGuy | Those articles discussed calculating a MD5 sum from the CD
08:29:08 PM | invinciblemutant | Garbee: yea, that is good...md5 check the ghost image too?
08:29:24 PM | Garbee | Either way, still doable for the same reason.
08:29:26 PM | GoodGuy | MD5 isnt considered good anymore
08:29:37 PM | Garbee | MD5's can be fooled though. Plus, what do you have to compare the sum to?
08:29:39 PM | robgor | RobbieF in zorinos 6 where do u go to see what network adapter u have, no idea what I have in my laptop
08:29:48 PM | GoodGuy | atr least SHa1sum and probably better.. sahe 256 etc
08:29:55 PM | GoodGuy | sha256
08:30:00 PM | Garbee | robgor, There should be an area in the lower right hand tray.
08:30:15 PM | Garbee | SHA's are my recommendation for sums.
08:30:23 PM | Garbee | Even then, I wouldn't trust an infected drive.
08:30:23 PM | GoodGuy | same here
08:30:39 PM | GoodGuy | many Linux distros are switching to Sha256
08:30:51 PM | Garbee | I typically setup a system once, then make my own recovery discs for it. So I can always get to my known good point and go from there on it.
08:30:59 PM | invinciblemutant | just wonder who is invincib2emutant
08:31:05 PM | Garbee | Each system hand-baked from Garbee with love of not wasting my time later.
08:31:59 PM | invinciblemutant | one of my machine signed itself up?
08:32:03 PM | robgor | Garbee the problem Iam having is getting the network working in virtualbox as not sure which adaptor I have, working fine in zorin
08:32:25 PM | Garbee | Virtualbox will tell you which adapter the system is using.
08:32:39 PM | Garbee | Under network settings in the main VB area for the machine.
08:32:46 PM | robgor | it list a few actually
08:33:04 PM | Garbee | robgor, Whichever one is actually selected from the drop-down is the one you use.
08:33:12 PM | Garbee | Typically the default "just works" on most VM's.
08:33:17 PM | robgor | ok
08:33:19 PM | Garbee | Only chose something else if you know you need something else.
08:33:46 PM | Garbee | ifconfig to see the list and compare the hardware outputted to the one VB shows and you know which adapter to target with other commands.
08:34:17 PM | Garbee | robgor, FYI (and I don't say this often) the VBox documentation is very good. F1 for more help there.
08:34:26 PM | invinciblemutant | i know that we need to compile some modules whenever i upgrade my vbox
08:34:49 PM | Garbee | invinciblemutant, That would most likely be the virtuabox additions.
08:35:02 PM | Garbee | They shouldn't be an issue here.
08:35:24 PM | invinciblemutant | most of the time, upgrading the kernel will break vbox
08:35:52 PM | invinciblemutant | not sure which is broken, i normally reinstall vbox
08:35:53 PM | Garbee | No, it just breaks the additions since they aren't compiled for the new kernel. So just recompile the additions and reboot and all should be good to go.
08:36:13 PM | Garbee | If you are talking about the host, then once again, recompile the modules for it.
08:36:18 PM | invinciblemutant | i didnt know that, i will try next time
08:36:25 PM | _Jot_ | help! I have gone blind! Oh wait, RobbieF just turned off the lights
08:36:52 PM | invinciblemutant | yea, i was talking about the host
08:37:31 PM | invinciblemutant | Anyway has learned about galaxy note 10.1
08:37:38 PM | invinciblemutant | it sounds very cool
08:37:44 PM | robgor | Garbee which is best to use if you want to move an virtualbox image from one machine to another
08:37:52 PM | invinciblemutant | i mean it looks cool
08:38:06 PM | Garbee | robgor, You can export an appliance from VBox. I recommend that.
08:38:24 PM | invinciblemutant | robgor: which media? which what?
08:39:37 PM | robgor | I want to be able to great a virtualbox image and be able to easily move it across say from my laptop to say my desktop and vice versa etc
08:40:03 PM | Garbee | Well, you shouldn't be moving an image very often, that can take quite some time.
08:40:24 PM | Garbee | In that case though, you could just move the disk image back and forth from the directory the machine is setup uin.
08:40:27 PM | Garbee | setup in*
08:40:52 PM | robgor | yeah just want to get it setup right and then move it
08:40:56 PM | invinciblemutant | i just moved my image from my cloud to my mac
08:41:03 PM | invinciblemutant | it took 5 hours to move
08:41:14 PM | Garbee | robgor, Then an Virtual appliance is best for that.
08:41:17 PM | invinciblemutant | perhaps an usb3 or thunderbolt drive would be good
08:41:25 PM | Garbee | It is also useful as a backup in case you need a good re-install point.
08:41:51 PM | Garbee | invinciblemutant, Even USB2 is better than internet download on something like that.
08:42:10 PM | invinciblemutant | lol, i meant pogoplug
08:42:17 PM | invinciblemutant | local access !!!
08:42:23 PM | invinciblemutant | it took 5 hours
08:42:38 PM | Garbee | That must have been one huge image then... also how fast is "local" access.
08:42:41 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Well everyone! Have a great week!
08:42:42 PM | invinciblemutant | it is a shame i dont have gigabit network here
08:42:50 PM | Garbee | My local on a fast ethernet is only 10MB/s.
08:42:55 PM | _Jot_ | you too Dennis_Kelley
08:43:03 PM | invinciblemutant | i was on wifi N, 150
08:43:04 PM | robgor | in the virtual disk creation wizard you have option for virtualbox disk image (VDI) virtual machine disk (VMDK) virtual hard disk (VHD) and parrallels hard disk (HDD) not sure which is the best to use
08:43:11 PM | invinciblemutant | rate was 140, faster than fast eth
08:43:21 PM | invinciblemutant | just 15gb of image
08:43:23 PM | Garbee | Yea, so if you don't have Gig at most you are 10MB of actual transfer speed invinciblemutant, unless you have some crazy connection setup I havn't seen before.
08:43:42 PM | Garbee | robgor, use the default.
08:43:57 PM | Garbee | Just make sure it is dynamic unless you want a static image (which I don't recommend.)
08:44:18 PM | invinciblemutant | gigabit? but pogoplug was on USB2
08:44:27 PM | invinciblemutant | how fast can i go?
08:44:39 PM | Garbee | invinciblemutant, You are restricted to both ethernet and USB2 speeds.
08:44:48 PM | Garbee | I can get 20+ MB/s transfers on USB2.
08:44:56 PM | Garbee | But I *NEVER* break 10MB/s on my fast ethernet.
08:45:23 PM | Garbee | So my ethernet cap of 10MB/s is my bottleneck, probably the same for yours as well.
08:45:56 PM | invinciblemutant | let me try to measure it now
08:46:12 PM | robgor | ok will do garbee
08:46:33 PM | Garbee | robgor, For future reference though, I use VDI unless I know I need otherwise (which is *very* rare.)
08:46:50 PM | Rednova | Garbee you busy?
08:46:57 PM | faolchu-aonair | hello
08:47:06 PM | Garbee | Rednova, I'm winding down to go to bed soon.
08:47:12 PM | robgor | yeah i wont be using it very often though
08:47:20 PM | Garbee | Still helping some people in many chatrooms though, so might be delayed response here.
08:48:00 PM | Rednova | Just a quick guide to installing Ubuntu on a SSD. I use EXT2 and not EXT3 dont enable Swar area and something else?
08:48:31 PM | Garbee | Rednova, Good start. That is pretty much it for the actual install.
08:48:43 PM | Garbee | Immediately after though you will want to go add noatime to fstab.
08:49:10 PM | revdjenk | Garbee: is that to cut down on writes?
08:49:17 PM | Garbee | http://www.gadgetwisdom.com/2010/06/02/planning-for-and-optimizing-solid-state-drives/
08:49:28 PM | Garbee | revdjenk, Yea. It stops writing the last access time to files.
08:49:41 PM | Garbee | Rednova, See that link I just posted for some more tips.
08:49:42 PM | invinciblemutant | Garbee: My network trnasfer 1GB in 15 minutes
08:50:24 PM | invinciblemutant | which is kinda reasonable for a 15GB to trasfer in about 5hours
08:51:02 PM | invinciblemutant | direct calculation by proportion is 4 hours
08:51:04 PM | Garbee | invinciblemutant, (1 gigabyte) / (15 minutes) = 1.13777778 MBps
08:51:31 PM | Garbee | (15 gigabytes) / (4 hours) = 1.06666667 MBps
08:51:36 PM | Garbee | Yup, pretty close.
08:51:44 PM | Garbee | Still much slower than direct USB2 transfer.
08:51:59 PM | Rednova | Thanks Garbee :)
08:52:15 PM | invinciblemutant | that is about 10mbps
08:52:21 PM | invinciblemutant | isnt it?
08:53:15 PM | Garbee | No, you transfers are capping at roughly 1MB/s
08:53:16 PM | robgor | hmm well I transfered a 50gig virtualbox image over in about 2 hours
08:53:22 PM | Garbee | USB2.0 I can get 20+ MB/s
08:54:14 PM | invinciblemutant | that is direct usb conenction
08:54:26 PM | Garbee | Yup, no ethernet bottleneck like you have.
08:54:55 PM | Garbee | I think even direct Gb network using a crossover cable would be faster than ethernet via a network.
08:55:10 PM | _Jot_ | there are no crossover cables with Gb networking
08:55:13 PM | GoodGuy | If you use something like Rsync or Unison, the next transmission will only xfer the changed parts iirc
08:55:19 PM | Garbee | _Jot_, They all can do it.
08:55:26 PM | Garbee | You just align your connector right.
08:55:37 PM | Garbee | It is up to the computer system being Gigabit capable.
08:55:39 PM | invinciblemutant | _Jot_: why not
08:55:42 PM | _Jot_ | no, there is only one type of cable with gb networking
08:55:57 PM | invinciblemutant | how RX and TX works then...
08:55:57 PM | _Jot_ | they all auto-sense, it's in the specifications
08:56:14 PM | invinciblemutant | _Jot_: then you must ensure that your adapter is auto too
08:56:42 PM | invinciblemutant | perhaps all gb adapter are automidx
08:56:53 PM | _Jot_ | it is in the specifications, so if it doesn't auto-sense, it is not 802 or whatever compatible
08:57:14 PM | GoodGuy | Wow.. I was just watching a Drum Corps Youtube video and saw they had a 4K version available in addition to 1080P
08:57:23 PM | invinciblemutant | ok, then we can conclude that all gb adapter are auto
08:57:38 PM | GoodGuy | Dont have anything good enough to display that resolution
08:57:41 PM | invinciblemutant | afaik, all macbook adapters are auto
08:57:58 PM | invinciblemutant | i just flash a router with it without a crossover
08:57:58 PM | GoodGuy | YouTube must have one heck of a hard drive farm
08:58:31 PM | invinciblemutant | flashed
08:58:55 PM | Garbee | _Jot_, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable ...There apparently is a Gigabit crossover standard. http://standards.ieee.org/getieee802/download/802.3-2008_section3.pdf
08:59:22 PM | Garbee | So, *technically* there should be a way to get a gigabit crossover to work.
09:00:02 PM | _Jot_ | read the part about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto-MDIX where it says 'Subsequently, Dove promoted auto-MDIX within the 1000BASE-T standard['
09:02:08 PM | Garbee | Jot, whether it is automatically done or manually making the cable, having a direct connection between 2 machines using a gigabit connection is still possible.
09:02:12 PM | Garbee | That is the whole point.
09:02:22 PM | invinciblemutant | _Jot_: so auto midx is gb standard
09:02:37 PM | _Jot_ | yes invinciblemutant
09:02:53 PM | _Jot_ | it is in the standards, so there is no reason to make a cable, because gigabit doesn't have send-receive pairs
09:03:11 PM | invinciblemutant | we can conclude that it gb adapters will work with both kind of cables
09:03:45 PM | _Jot_ | actually, potentially no, because crosswires can cause interference
09:04:19 PM | invinciblemutant | gb does have tx and rx, see the image in wiki we just referred
09:05:15 PM | _Jot_ | the point is, it doesn't care which wire is the send and receive etc
09:05:21 PM | invinciblemutant | 2 line each for tx and rx
09:05:53 PM | invinciblemutant | otherwise, it is not eth
09:06:10 PM | Garbee | I'm off to sleep guys. Don't tear the room down in my absence.
09:06:44 PM | invinciblemutant | ok...enjoy your sleep
09:06:49 PM | _Jot_ | okay Garbee, we'll tear down the room, have a nice dream
09:08:43 PM | Rednova | Yeah we will tear it down to give you more work to do when you wake up Garbee :) Keep you busy
