07:05:24 PM | T0B33 | AdamKujawa! are you the one who invented malwarebytes? :D
07:05:39 PM | AdamKujawa | No, I just made it awesome =D
07:05:39 PM | _Jot_ | wow! Spidergirl is really SashaD! Spiderman revealed Spidergirls secret identity!

07:05:47 PM | gpop7 | Spiderrobbief is on the case

07:05:52 PM | EightMileFromTJ | hi

07:06:05 PM | AdamKujawa | Thanks! =D
07:06:10 PM | _Jot_ | If you want to rename yourself, type /nick newnickname where newnickname is your new nickname
07:06:16 PM | CDavis_ | Hi all
07:06:16 PM | _Jot_ | for example /nick this_is_me
07:06:20 PM | Guest60441 | It changed my name
07:06:32 PM | maxwell6307 | is that suit hot robbief ? lol
07:06:40 PM | T0B33 | AdamKujawa. No thank you! Its helped me so many many times over the years!
07:06:43 PM | _Jot_ | hi CDavis
07:06:54 PM | AdamKujawa | That is awesome and what we love to hear =)
07:07:17 PM | RavenLords | hello everyone
07:07:25 PM | Dareboy58 | hi raven
07:08:01 PM | _Jot_ | I wonder how AdamKujawa would handle the spiders 'infecting' our computers right now
07:08:01 PM | robgor | hi RobbieF SashaD guys and girls
07:08:10 PM | EightMileFromTJ | sounds like a smart phone
07:08:32 PM | Heritage105th_ | linux rocks!
07:09:16 PM | SashaD | Hi robgor
07:09:57 PM | chaslinux | Like the one I got from the "Better Busienss Bureau" where it looks like someone has made a complaint about our organization. Easy to tell though, the complaint link is always a redirect.
07:10:10 PM | chaslinux | *Business
07:10:18 PM | pyrosrock | omg AdamKujawa did u just mention Runescape?
07:11:13 PM | ajamison5579 | this interview looks like some kind of a superhero support group
07:11:15 PM | ajamison5579 | lol
07:11:25 PM | Heritage105th_ | lol
07:11:26 PM | _Jot_ | it makes me feel we're all superheros
07:11:42 PM | chaslinux | Really it's just social engineering.
07:11:55 PM | gpop7 | malwarebytes works well for me
07:11:58 PM | Dareboy58 | how can we have malware in linux?
07:12:22 PM | maxwell6307 | because it comes through email
07:12:27 PM | ajamison5579 | Linux is not impervious to attacks its just not the favored platform for attacks
07:12:32 PM | Heritage105th_ | yeah robbie how is linux infected?
07:12:38 PM | robgor | I have got phising attempts from banks before funny thing is even got from bank I not with
07:13:08 PM | Heritage105th_ | is there malware bytes for linux?
07:13:10 PM | chaslinux | Dareboy58: poisoned apps in repositories, but it's pretty hard to get something sent to say Fedora, that has malicious software, without the code being caught.
07:13:15 PM | Dareboy58 | I never open email that I don't known who's coming from
07:13:15 PM | ajamison5579 | someone could make Linux malware or a Linux virus just as easy as a windows one but there is no incentive to do it currently
07:13:54 PM | chaslinux | ajamison5579 I'd think totally wrong, there's even more because you can poison servers, and spread much faster.
07:14:07 PM | chaslinux | *just my thought though
07:14:08 PM | robgor | also can pass it on from linux to windows which is a problem
07:14:16 PM | Sidney__ | Why not a Linux virus? Linux runs on a lot of servers
07:14:18 PM | _Jot_ | SashaD, if you click it, it can infect your computer with virusses and other stuff, even before it asks for details, so never click any link that you didn't ask for
07:14:24 PM | robgor | yeah had that paypal one
07:14:53 PM | ajamison5579 | chaslinux most people who make viruses target the consumer or corporations that store fincial info most corporations use Linux for a webserver maindly
07:14:57 PM | ajamison5579 | mainly
07:14:58 PM | SashaD | : (
07:15:02 PM | robgor | just ignore it. explorer especially
07:15:08 PM | _Jot_ | SashaD, if for example, you get an email claiming to be from Paypal, and you want to go to paypal, then open your browser yourself, and type the paypal-address yourself, instead of clicking any link
07:15:32 PM | gpop7 | yes i have gotten them from paypal also.
07:15:48 PM | chaslinux | ajamison5579 agreed. There really isn't much incentive to write malware for say the Ubuntu desktop. More incentive for Android on phones.
07:16:20 PM | smittysmit | Paypal, UPS and many more
07:16:32 PM | ajamison5579 | chaslinux yep when and if Linux hits the desktop as an popular comercial alternative to Windows then they may come
07:16:42 PM | Garbee | You bank will email you.
07:17:06 PM | gpop7 | never click. i call directly or go directly to web site myself.
07:17:16 PM | Dareboy58 | yes, but only to say you have email in your account
07:17:25 PM | pyrosrock | gpop7 sounds good
07:17:28 PM | Garbee | I go through random links all the time.
07:17:36 PM | Sidney__ | I though the main problem with windows is everyone wants to be the admin or root
07:17:42 PM | chaslinux | Oh Robbie we get lots of people who have been getting calls from "Microsoft." Even Ruth Morton, Microsoft Evangelist who works for Microsoft, got one a few months back. Lots of people in Kitchener currently getting called by fake Microsoft reps.
07:18:04 PM | gpop7 | between that and getting the one that i have money in a far off place.
07:18:31 PM | robgor | RobbieF general rule dont trust any emails or files etc
07:18:33 PM | chrisreich | Sidney__ the main problem with Windows is that software requires admin/root access to the computer.
07:18:34 PM | Garbee | Sidney__, Actually most people don't know they are the Admin. But Win 7 and 8 have UAC that is actually decent.
07:18:44 PM | MysteryFCM | Fake Microsoft etc calls, are the chaps in Kolkata (primarily, there is showing to be a potential move to Malaysia, but that's unverified, and of course, call centers in other countries have been spotted on a handful of occasions)
07:19:20 PM | Garbee | chrisreich, No they tend not to actually. They need those rights to install, just like Linux. But running it you only need user privs for the most part.
07:19:20 PM | ajamison5579 | Garbee part of the reason also is alot of programs require admin privs the problem is knowing which are ok to have them
07:19:26 PM | Sidney__ | I got a call from Microsoft but the caller Id said it was a hotel
07:19:51 PM | _Jot_ | Microsoft would never call you out of the blue, Sidney__, so you didn't get called by Microsoft, but by scammers
07:19:55 PM | chrisreich | Garbee - not in my experience
07:20:04 PM | Heritage105th_ | my biggest concern robbie is that you do not over heat
07:20:31 PM | ajamison5579 | If MS called me I would just hang up not interested in buying anything from someone who calls me if i want to buy something i will call them or go online
07:21:29 PM | EightMileFromTJ | I have a seperate email address that I only use for my bank.
07:21:36 PM | chaslinux | ajamison5579 well to be fair it's not quite equal, Linux does have a better security model. For me the main problem is most Windows users are admin. Really Windows users can be just as secure, just need good habits.
07:21:38 PM | Garbee | chrisreich, Apparently there hasn't been much lately since you argured a few weeks ago with information about Apple that hasn't been accurate in years.
07:24:35 PM | T0B33 | I fell for that one when i was 12 on bebo
07:24:49 PM | smittysmit | Loved getting the "windows" look alike alert for a virus
07:24:50 PM | pyrosrock | msn is the worst for it! RobbieF
07:25:12 PM | smittysmit | should have said on Linux
07:25:33 PM | T0B33 | pyrosrock it was on MSN i fell for it :/ All my friends fell for it and got hacked
07:26:04 PM | chaslinux | Garbee, wondering because I mostly work with Windows XP and Linux, can users easily turn off UAC? See a fair amount of people with Win 7 machines that are infected...
07:26:20 PM | ajamison5579 | I get about 5 MSN friend requests from random people a day ignore them all
07:26:29 PM | _Jot_ | here people fall for it too, they said 'yeah, my friend send me that link' even though the text was in English, and that friend is Dutch and doesn't speak English, and that didn't make them think twice
07:26:33 PM | T0B33 | Some one i knew was making remote admin tools then malwarebytes came in and bang xD
07:26:39 PM | Guest_5264 | _hi guys
07:26:44 PM | Mathman47 | I use Malwarebytes every night. Great product.
07:26:49 PM | Sidney__ | You only have to pay for Malwarebytes once
07:26:59 PM | invinciblemutant | hi guys
07:27:05 PM | Dareboy58 | hi
07:27:07 PM | _Jot_ | keep up the good work AdamKujawa :)
07:27:12 PM | smittysmit | I manage the Barracuda at work it is mind boggling what it catches
07:27:17 PM | albertr | Hey all
07:27:17 PM | CDavis_ | AdamKujawa I heard there is a centrally manageable corporate edition in the works. Is that true, if so what is ETA?
07:27:18 PM | Garbee | chaslinux, UAC can be turned off. Vista it really didn't do anything, 7 made UAC decent, 8 it is much improved.
07:27:33 PM | chaslinux | It is a great product as far as Windows software is... if I used Windows at home I'd buy it.
07:27:39 PM | Garbee | Turning off UAC is just a switch in the Control panel for the user.
07:28:08 PM | Guest43224 | who is the winner
07:28:09 PM | MysteryFCM | @CDavis, it is (no ETA for it)
07:28:15 PM | AdamKujawa | CDavis_: Our Enterprise edition is actually currently available
07:28:21 PM | smittysmit | 865684 congrats
07:28:25 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, maybe Spiderlady can help you out?
07:28:27 PM | chaslinux | Would it maybe be turned off by OEMs Garbee?
07:28:32 PM | Jebster | Jebster for the WIN

07:31:47 PM | CDavis_ | AdamKujawa Are thosefeatures available for under 100 licenses?
07:32:09 PM | AdamKujawa | CDavis_: http://www.malwarebytes.org/business/small_business
07:32:43 PM | pyrosrock | so we could put linux back on it!
07:33:34 PM | CDavis_ | AdamKujawa I don't see central managability listed for the small business edition
07:33:58 PM | gpop7 | robbief. i hope that you are not hot in that suit.
07:34:26 PM | AdamKujawa | CDavis_: You would need to get a hold of our Sales department for more information about our Enterprise options
07:34:36 PM | im | i can imagine that robbie is wet now
07:34:46 PM | im | sweaty wet !!!
07:34:52 PM | Sidney__ | Anyone here live in South Carolina? You just got to love government
07:35:17 PM | chaslinux | AdamKujawa we currently use Symantec Enterprise through Techsoup licensing for Non-profits.
07:35:29 PM | _Jot_ | condoleances, chaslinux
07:35:48 PM | _Jot_ | SashaD, we won't forget who you are, don't worry
07:36:02 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, I thought if you looked like that, your spidey-sense went off
07:36:04 PM | im | sasha is getting better vocal
07:36:10 PM | albertr | ;^)
07:36:10 PM | AdamKujawa | Hi RobbieF
07:36:18 PM | Dareboy58 | it's very hard to forget Sasha :)
07:36:22 PM | AdamKujawa | hi J_Kujawa
07:36:25 PM | chaslinux | _Jot_ actually it's not that bad, at least for me, I only RDP into my Windows machine when necessary. Most of the time I use Linux at work.
07:36:30 PM | U-Al | I read that there is a new Malware which attaches its malicious code to the routines for handling mouse events. Since nobody moves the mouse in an automated threat analysis system, the code will remain inactive, and the malware undetected
07:36:34 PM | T0B33 | RobbieF your best friends are crawling all over my walls :(
07:36:42 PM | chaslinux | You as well RobbieF
07:36:56 PM | chaslinux | RobbieF I like that you had the main content first.
07:37:18 PM | _Jot_ | U-Al, it will always have to do something that causes malicious behaviour, so eventually it will always be detected
07:37:19 PM | pyrosrock | TOB33 what kind?
07:37:26 PM | albertr | RobbieF thanks for pointing out ZORIN-OS - I'm using NOW ;^)
07:37:27 PM | im | she loves long flirting letters
07:37:31 PM | im | :p
07:37:40 PM | RobbieF | :-D
07:37:43 PM | MysteryFCM | U-Al, malware analysis both automated and manual, look for all activity, inclusive of hooks at the low levels, and of course, hooks on APIs, inclusive of those used to look for mouse movement and other handling events
07:37:52 PM | T0B33 | pyrosrock the kind that look like RobbieF :( Right above my heater :(
07:38:00 PM | J_Kujawa | hey adam, not bad, very informative
07:38:05 PM | AdamKujawa | RobbieF: One thing I forgot to mention is that Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is recommended to use along with additional security applications like Norton or Microsoft Security Essentials. We want our users to be protected, not just use our product =)
07:38:12 PM | AdamKujawa | J_Kujawa: Thanks =D
07:38:25 PM | T0B33 | Zorin would be a good name for a super hero!
07:38:31 PM | im | i like to post questions here in the chat room...
07:38:36 PM | AdamKujawa | Zorin the Destroyer!
07:38:43 PM | pyrosrock | TOB33 blue and red and a little fat?
07:38:43 PM | im | would Robbie pick it up?
07:38:47 PM | CDavis_ | AdamKujawa Do you have a sales contact I can use. The last time (few weeks ago) I tried contacting Malwarebytes, I was redirected to an agent with DSolution.
07:39:07 PM | AdamKujawa | CDavis_: Did you go through our website?
07:39:09 PM | U-Al | AV companies will probably need to introduce virtual mouse nudgers now.
07:39:14 PM | T0B33 | pyrosrock and bald :( All of them!
07:39:15 PM | J_Kujawa | I am impressed, you are really moving ahead with this technology and the company and people behind it..
07:39:34 PM | AdamKujawa | J_Kujawa: =D
07:39:48 PM | AdamKujawa | CDavis_: http://www.malwarebytes.org/support/corporate/
07:39:53 PM | pyrosrock | TOB33 aw... no cute furry ones?
07:40:07 PM | MysteryFCM | ooooh, J_Kujawa and Adam .... me duth thinketh errr ... forgot where I was
07:40:12 PM | _Jot_ | I think if it is a girly one, it may be furry, seeing the screen
07:40:19 PM | AdamKujawa | MysteryFCM: He is my Dad, lol
07:40:20 PM | chrisreich | I suggest FreeNAS based on FreeBSD
07:40:21 PM | T0B33 | pyrosrock all spiders look horrible :'(
07:40:28 PM | MysteryFCM | ah, hehe that'll do it ;o)
07:40:31 PM | MysteryFCM | Did you get my emails?
07:40:36 PM | J_Kujawa | We'll just wanted to say high I viewed the interview, I'll let you get back to the IRC questions...Take care MS...
07:40:41 PM | Stevo | data tapes works well
07:40:48 PM | chaslinux | RobbieF you must be backing up hundreds of gigs of data / videos???
07:41:04 PM | pyrosrock | RobbieF did u hear that: T0B33 10:40:21
07:41:06 PM | pyrosrock | pyrosrock all spiders look horrible
07:41:13 PM | im | i might lose my life in a fire...
07:41:29 PM | CDavis_ | AdamKujawa Yes I did. I received an email stating they didn't have the resources to dealer with resllers right now and was sent contact info for DSolutions
07:41:30 PM | AdamKujawa | J_Kujawa: Thanks Dad! Talk to you soon.
07:41:30 PM | im | what is the way to backup my life so that i dont lose my life
07:41:51 PM | T0B33 | Yet i don't have it in me to hurt them :( One was climbing on my dog not long ago pyrosrock .... While he was sleeping and my dog kinda eat him :(
07:41:55 PM | _Jot_ | im, it's all part of the matrix, so no need to worry about it
07:41:58 PM | im | i worry about fire always when i am in deep sleep
07:42:00 PM | AdamKujawa | CDavis_: If you post your e-mail I can get someone to contact you =)
07:42:24 PM | AdamKujawa | MysteryFCM: I closed my e-mail for bandwidth sake
07:42:26 PM | im | anyway to backup my life
07:42:31 PM | AdamKujawa | MysteryFCM: I just got your e-mails, lol
07:42:34 PM | MysteryFCM | ah, that'll explain it, lol
07:42:36 PM | MysteryFCM | hehe cool
07:42:44 PM | im | DVD is way too slow
07:42:49 PM | im | and not reliable
07:42:57 PM | im | as well as long name support on dvd
07:43:03 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, DVDs can be an additional way as well, having multiple backups on multiple mediums can be useful, so harddrives + DVD can be great
07:43:08 PM | CDavis_ | AdamKujawa I just followed you on twitter. Follow me back and I will DM you my email address. And thanks!
07:43:10 PM | im | use dropbox, or box.com
07:43:15 PM | MysteryFCM | DVD is far too slow, external HDD, remote and additional box is ideal
07:43:20 PM | AdamKujawa | CDavis_: No problem, thanks!
07:43:37 PM | im | or pogoplug
07:43:42 PM | im | i have a pogoplug
07:43:47 PM | AdamKujawa | lol im
07:43:49 PM | im | it is awsome
07:43:51 PM | robgor | RobbieF its for a friend who will need to store cad files etc
07:44:23 PM | robgor | RobbieF what about freeNAS also
07:44:26 PM | im | i have 2 gigs disk on the pogoplug
07:44:41 PM | im | correction...I have 2 pogoplugs
07:44:50 PM | im | one at home, one in the office
07:45:17 PM | im | why i am having 2 is too sync data between the 2
07:45:23 PM | chaslinux | Make sure the server weighs well over 100 lbs and awkward to steal.
07:45:25 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, SashaD, don't forget that a backup is only a backup if you can test-restore it, without knowing you can restore a backup, you have no backup
07:45:29 PM | im | it is exactly what robbie says
07:45:44 PM | MysteryFCM | _Jot_ you read my mind ....
07:45:46 PM | im | 2 tera on both pogoplugs
07:45:50 PM | pyrosrock | im id love a second pogoplug but cant afford
07:46:16 PM | im | pyrosrock...u can get it for 29.99 with team family package for free
07:46:29 PM | im | you get the team for 2 members and get the hardware for free
07:46:31 PM | pyrosrock | which one?
07:46:44 PM | im | it is not the latest device but still useful mirroring
07:46:45 PM | AdamKujawa | CDavis_: Followed =D
07:47:05 PM | im | i thin pogoplug is getting off the older version of hardware
07:47:14 PM | im | that is why they are giving away those
07:47:17 PM | pyrosrock | nah im id only want the one with usb3
07:47:18 PM | im | check it out...
07:47:21 PM | Sidney__ | the cost of the pogo has gone down
07:47:31 PM | im | no point having usb3 on it really
07:47:51 PM | im | because the internet is way slower than usb2 even usb1
07:47:54 PM | Dareboy58 | I use flash player on debian sid
07:48:02 PM | MysteryFCM | CDavis, central management system for Malwarebytes has been launched, so is available to corp/business customers
07:48:16 PM | AdamKujawa | MysteryFCM: Thanks =D
07:48:17 PM | im | usb3 is significant for disk to disk transfer on pogoplug
07:48:25 PM | im | otherwise, i dont see the point
07:48:34 PM | pyrosrock | im yeah but id have the usb3 one @ home and move my old one away
07:48:38 PM | im | the bottleneck is on the internet bandwidth
07:48:55 PM | ajamison5579 | Robbief have you thought about adding youtube as a live stream option also
07:49:01 PM | im | well...a back device can be slow
07:49:24 PM | im | there is no problem at all as you will just let it run for life
07:49:42 PM | Sidney__ | I can watch this program without flash?
07:49:51 PM | im | i am thinking of upgrading it with synchronization
07:49:52 PM | T0B33 | I have a great chrome extension that plays youtube in HTML5 ... All videos. Never use it any more tho
07:49:58 PM | Dareboy58 | not sure
07:50:09 PM | im | i am usign the backup software to back from my laptop
07:50:17 PM | im | once backup
07:50:22 PM | im | everything is mirrorred
07:50:26 PM | CDavis_ | AdamKujawa DM sent. I just did a 25 user install and central management would be so helpful.
07:50:42 PM | im | RobbieF: do you have time for question in the chat room
07:50:48 PM | ajamison5579 | Robbief can your youtube account do live streaming

08:15:27 PM | pyrosrock | thats easy to get _Jot_ just go to the past
08:15:47 PM | _Jot_ | oh, like going back to the future?
08:16:01 PM | pyrosrock | yeah something like that
08:22:00 PM | ajamison5579 | Robbief what is a good time frame to set for when you archive an incremental backup set and start a new one
08:22:31 PM | Sidney__ | AdamKujawa, does the backup cd have the key embedded?
08:27:09 PM | RobbieF | ajamison5579 it entirely depends on the scenario... on-site, off-site, when you're most active on the computers, etc. For example: a home business where you create the odd word doc, but the accountant comes in every Monday, I'd say run the backup late Monday night so the day's bookkeeping is part of that... running it on a Wednesday would potentially mean losing 9 days of data if your hard drive crashed on a Tuesday... so run it when it's critical.
08:27:29 PM | AdamKujawa | Sidney__: What do you mean by Embedded?
08:28:04 PM | RobbieF | me, I store any critical data (everything!) redundantly (unRAID). Then, it is uploaded through SSH to a Pogoplug device off-site every night. The reason I do it every night isn't because of critical data though, it's so each night's upload is reasonably small.
08:28:41 PM | RobbieF | tonight's off-site backup will be about 1.5 GB (all the data files from tonight's show)... but by the time my backup runs, the video is already "in the cloud" for syndications :)
08:29:12 PM | ajamison5579 | Robbief right now the way its setup is it did an intial backup then it does daily incremental backups and every 30 days I run the consolodate backups option in my backup software which combines the incremental backups with the main one and then creates a new set (intial, plus incr backups) the consolodated one gets archived
08:29:14 PM | _Jot_ | Embedded as in, need only the CD for installation, and not keep a seperate sheet with the serial-number to type during installation, I think
08:30:28 PM | ajamison5579 | I was trying to figure out if this was a good option or if i should just do one huge continuous set where i never consolodate into one backup
08:30:58 PM | _Jot_ | having to keep seperate serial numbers for applications can be an issue for people with dogs, children, and so on, who love to seperate CDs from their sleeves, and make important papers (like the serial) missing quickly and efficiently
08:32:04 PM | Sidney__ | I think i've it out the cd is because you cant download it again
08:32:57 PM | Sidney__ | I'll still have to remember the lic key
08:35:08 PM | robgor | RobbieF thanks for answering my question will have to wait till tommorrow to watch it again as my ipod wifi was dropping out from time to time so missed some of it
08:35:22 PM | _Jot_ | hey RobbieF, great to see you! You missed a big show, Spiderman and Spidergirl came to visit
08:35:44 PM | RobbieF | my pleasure robgor - thanks for sending it in!
08:37:04 PM | robgor | RobbieF liked the spiderman costumes, maybe next time wear something that will allow you to see properly
08:37:50 PM | RobbieF | hehe
08:38:01 PM | robgor | seya guys goto get back to work
08:38:13 PM | _Jot_ | have a good time robgor
08:39:28 PM | im | hi guys
08:39:37 PM | _Jot_ | hey :P
08:39:37 PM | im | me again
08:39:51 PM | RobbieF | hey im
08:39:59 PM | im | i am trying to get debian instead of ubuntu as ubuntu site is slow in malaysia
08:40:02 PM | im | update is a pain
08:40:03 PM | _Jot_ | im -> invinciblemutant
08:40:15 PM | RobbieF | So Sasha must like you all... she signed on for another two shows in December, including Christmas day!
08:40:29 PM | im | i am on the debian site, just wonder why they have so many cds
08:40:40 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, she must be feeling guilty for missing todays show!
08:40:40 PM | im | http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/6.0.6/i386/iso-cd/
08:41:10 PM | im | why are there so many cds?
08:41:20 PM | im | for a single debian installer?
08:41:45 PM | _Jot_ | there are a few different desktops, and also a complete version for installation without internet
08:41:56 PM | ajamison5579 | I still say it looks like we were watching a super hero support group
08:42:15 PM | _Jot_ | if you're doing an internet-installation, you only need the first cd
08:43:02 PM | im | 1st of 52 cds?
08:43:04 PM | _Jot_ | I'm not entirely sure what it will download, and what it will install from CD though, I didn't pay attention that much the last time I installed it
08:43:10 PM | _Jot_ | yes
08:43:16 PM | ajamison5579 | I installed Zorin OS 6 natively along side my Win 7 just put it on my smaller 60gb SSD
08:43:37 PM | ajamison5579 | seems pretty nice though i had a hell of a time with graphics till i got the proprietary drivers installed
08:43:43 PM | im | hey RobbieF
08:43:48 PM | RobbieF | Hi
08:43:57 PM | ajamison5579 | Hay is for horses son
08:44:02 PM | ajamison5579 | lol
08:44:19 PM | im | I remember that in one show you showed how to get hold of debian
08:44:20 PM | ajamison5579 | I am channeling my grandfather now God help me
08:44:29 PM | RobbieF | sure
08:44:32 PM | im | i am on the debian site, it shows so many CD to download
08:44:44 PM | im | just a bit confused with that
08:45:35 PM | _Jot_ | im, the faq says you may need the first two cds only, http://www.debian.org/CD/faq/#which-cd
08:45:41 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Good night all!
08:45:52 PM | _Jot_ | apparently, the first cd contains the most popular packages, the 2nd the almost most popular, and so on
08:46:00 PM | RobbieF | im http://www.category5.tv/episodes/223.php
08:46:35 PM | RobbieF | and this one in particular teaches about downloading it: http://www.category5.tv/episodes/256.php
08:46:35 PM | im | ic...
08:46:46 PM | im | i just need to setup a basic server
08:46:47 PM | RobbieF | you can click the play button next to the feature
08:47:06 PM | im | how do i know what packages are on the first cd
08:48:28 PM | _Jot_ | The FAQ says, can I get a list of packages and the answer is: Yes. Look on cdimage.debian.org for the corresponding .list.gz file - it will list all the packages and source files included in the image.
08:48:31 PM | im | i am getting rid of ubuntu on a server here
08:48:48 PM | _Jot_ | that's http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/
08:50:09 PM | _Jot_ | so in the list of files, it will have 'xxxx.list' and that has the filename-list of that image
08:50:41 PM | pyrosrock | for anyone that likes linux and gaming in the same sentiance! http://www.valvesoftware.com/linuxsurvey.php
08:50:49 PM | pyrosrock | RobbieF^
08:51:23 PM | im | ok...i think i will burn the first cd and give it a go
08:51:31 PM | im | finger cross that i do not need more cds
08:51:45 PM | im | thanks RobbieF
08:51:53 PM | im | thanks _Jot_
08:52:03 PM | RobbieF | my pleasure
08:52:56 PM | im | oh...damn..the netadmin has blocked some content of the page RobbieF
08:53:12 PM | RobbieF | ads most likely?
08:53:27 PM | im | what is under the title of Episode 256 — Debian as a LAMP Server Virtual Machine
08:53:33 PM | im | it is blocked
08:53:44 PM | RobbieF | banner
08:54:00 PM | RobbieF | do you get the video at least?
08:54:08 PM | RobbieF | Oh you mean right under it?
08:54:10 PM | RobbieF | that'd be the video :)
08:54:26 PM | RobbieF | how about this? http://play.cat5.tv/256/38:44
08:54:31 PM | im | that is blocked
08:54:36 PM | im | right under the title
08:54:47 PM | Heritage105th_ | robbie you have concidered a segment like command line tip of the week?
08:54:51 PM | _Jot_ | if you don't pay for the bandwidth, you may be able to download the video-file and play it less directly
08:54:58 PM | Garbee | Great. The WPD Downtime is due to HP's Cloud servers having issues in the location the site is hosted in.
08:55:18 PM | im | RobbieF: that works
08:55:22 PM | RobbieF | great :)
08:55:30 PM | RobbieF | so what is it that's blocking the main video?
08:55:35 PM | pyrosrock | sounds like everyone is having issues
08:55:43 PM | RobbieF | main video is hosted on blip.tv - the link I gave you is youtube
08:55:50 PM | im | i dont understand the mentality here
08:56:13 PM | im | manchester univesity ranked top 50 in the world not blocking that..this univ is blocking everything
08:56:21 PM | _Jot_ | maybe blip.tv is blocked because it isn't .com, .org. or .net
08:56:24 PM | Garbee | pyrosrock, I do believe we are done with HP's Cloud service for WPD.
08:56:33 PM | im | even as a member of staff
08:56:33 PM | Garbee | I can't say what I really think since it is a Tuesday.
08:56:40 PM | im | i am blocked from doing many things
08:56:52 PM | im | work just fucked up and stuck
08:57:07 PM | im | RobbieF: it is a bit slow here
08:57:08 PM | _Jot_ | wow, and they still let you type that word on the internet
08:57:09 PM | Garbee | im, Please watch language.
08:57:31 PM | Garbee | If it were any other day of the week I wouldn't really care. But it is a Tuesday.
08:57:34 PM | im | Garbee: sorry...
08:58:01 PM | im | direct irc connection is blocked
08:58:05 PM | im | i am on web irc
08:58:20 PM | AdamKujawa | If anyone comes across some phishing scams you could submit it to Phishtank.com, they keep an eye on various phishing scams
08:58:21 PM | im | dont let them know that i am on cat5, they will block later
08:58:53 PM | _Jot_ | I didn't mention that in the show cause I wasn't sure you would like that AdamKujawa, not that RobbieF would pay attention cause he couldn't see it with that mask )
08:58:59 PM | Garbee | My High School blocked IRC ports too. I just remoted home and connected on that system.
08:59:09 PM | AdamKujawa | haha
08:59:37 PM | pyrosrock | garbee yeah i did that with the internet at school
08:59:38 PM | im | my isp ip ranged is marked as porn sites
08:59:48 PM | im | this is uni mates
09:00:00 PM | im | not primary or secondary school
09:00:01 PM | Garbee | im, I can see that.
09:00:01 PM | AdamKujawa | _Jot_: Yeah I forgot to mention that and the fact that using something like LastPass could help you detect non-legit pages
09:00:15 PM | _Jot_ | well, a lot of nice looking girls go to university, so I guess that could be porn?
09:01:15 PM | _Jot_ | I also use OpenDNS which PhishTank is a part of, so if I would ever get infected, things would get blocked that way too
09:02:03 PM | im | Garbee: i am sorry to vent my frust here
09:02:24 PM | _Jot_ | a 'bad' thing is that malware also comes through ads, even legitimatl ads when am adversiting-provider gets infected, so these days you really have to block all ads too
09:02:56 PM | im | hi RobbieF ...that looks like the business card installer is everything to setup a complete system so that i can start apt-get from internet
09:03:21 PM | im | that is why IT support should be around
09:03:26 PM | _Jot_ | yes im, it doesn't always work on all systems though, so it may or may not work so well
09:04:00 PM | im | it is like quarantining all healthy people so that we can kill all the doctors and nurses
09:04:31 PM | im | _Jot_: what do you mean? it may not work?
09:05:02 PM | _Jot_ | im, the businesscard-version is small enough to fit on one of those small cds that are the size of a businesscard, and doesn't have all the drivers and so on that the bigger cds have
09:05:22 PM | im | ic...
09:05:25 PM | _Jot_ | in my case, it didn't have the network-drivers needed for my motherboard, so it wouldn't install on the computer i was using it for
09:05:34 PM | im | i dont want to waste time on resolving drivers
09:05:36 PM | _Jot_ | it does work for most computers though
09:05:43 PM | im | so better go for something decent
09:05:51 PM | Garbee | im, Don't worry about venting. I do all the time. Just on Tuesday's try to keep it PG-13 venting.
09:06:41 PM | im | is 'fucked up' PG18?
09:06:52 PM | AdamKujawa | PG18 = R
09:06:57 PM | _Jot_ | that f-word is a word that is bad on tuesday
09:07:40 PM | im | i think is vulgar, but still good for general audience
09:07:42 PM | _Jot_ | Robbie has wine, so it isn't all PG13 though
09:08:15 PM | _Jot_ | it's not a good word for children though :)
09:09:03 PM | _Jot_ | if it's a word you don't want small children to say, it's not good for tuesday
09:09:07 PM | _Jot_ | you know, words like Microsoft Windows and so on
09:10:05 PM | im | do you still keep after show log online?
09:10:14 PM | RobbieF | the chat room im?
09:10:20 PM | GWG | I have been delivered
09:10:28 PM | RobbieF | Congratulations GWG!
09:10:29 PM | _Jot_ | great GWG! And congratulations!
09:10:34 PM | im | i am going off to the IT unit to set the server up
09:10:40 PM | _Jot_ | Not just for arriving, but for winning the DrawBot competition
09:10:41 PM | GWG | Until tomorrow, when I may have to do it again
09:10:49 PM | im | is debian universal even for SMP machines
09:11:05 PM | RobbieF | there'd be a 32 bit version im
09:11:17 PM | im | RobbieF: yes, chat log
09:11:38 PM | RobbieF | I'm not sure if it comes with smp kernel OOTB but you can always install different kernels.
09:11:45 PM | im | yes, i have the 32bit iso down
09:11:46 PM | RobbieF | chat log: yes, they go live with the show notes.
09:11:50 PM | im | and ready to burn to a CD
09:11:57 PM | _Jot_ | im, the debian FAQ says the installer does not need any SMP support and will not boot with an SMP enabled kernel since it merely needs to install the system to your machine
09:12:01 PM | im | hope that it works on an SMP machine
09:12:03 PM | im | 2 CPU
09:12:11 PM | _Jot_ | so that means it should work on SMP and you can install an SMP kernel
09:12:14 PM | RobbieF | here's hoping... let us know
09:12:23 PM | RobbieF | yes, that's my thought too
09:12:29 PM | RobbieF | install 32-bit and then upgrade to an smp kernel
09:13:18 PM | im | ic...
09:13:37 PM | im | how a single core kernel run on an SMP machine?
09:14:11 PM | im | can a single core kernel run on an SMP machine?
09:14:13 PM | RobbieF | the standard kernel will support multiple cores, but just not give you the benefits of SMP
09:14:27 PM | im | ok...
09:14:34 PM | RobbieF | and here's hoping it goes great!
09:14:35 PM | RobbieF | :)
09:14:36 PM | im | i will give it a go
09:14:41 PM | RobbieF | you'll know if you boot the disk and it poops out.
09:14:50 PM | im | downloading debian is fast, < 10 minutes a CD
09:14:56 PM | _Jot_ | see? RobbieF says bad things too
09:15:17 PM | Garbee | im, After-show logs don't go online by Cat5, but since it is a Tuesday we still try to keep chat clean before and after show in case any newcommers are around or people who just in general don't like that kind of talk.
09:15:29 PM | im | lol...
09:15:51 PM | Garbee | I know, for a chat room in IRC that is pretty odd. But we do it.
09:15:56 PM | _Jot_ | I'm always suprised I get to stay and don't get kicked
09:16:01 PM | im | well...it is Internet...
09:16:14 PM | RobbieF | The G rating of the show tends to work its way into the chat room for sure.
09:16:14 PM | Garbee | What about it being the internet?
09:16:19 PM | Garbee | _Jot_, Why would we kick you?
09:16:26 PM | Garbee | I want to slap you often.
09:16:28 PM | Garbee | But not kick.
09:16:29 PM | _Jot_ | well Garbee, why not?
09:17:17 PM | im | as long as G = guided, PG=parents guide
09:17:52 PM | im | please rate internet as PG18, not only cat5
09:18:06 PM | im | i am off
09:18:18 PM | Garbee | Jot, Do you want me to kick you so you can see how it feels?
09:18:21 PM | _Jot_ | good luck with debian im, let us know how it went :)
09:18:25 PM | Garbee | I'm kinda lost here.
09:18:53 PM | _Jot_ | Garbee, oh master of the chatroom, please don't kick me! I am not worthy of it, it would only soil thine boot!
09:19:15 PM | Garbee | ew... I may kick just to keep the room's floor clean then.
09:19:18 PM | Garbee | ;)
09:19:21 PM | RobbieF | :)
09:19:49 PM | Garbee | And HP has... *argh*
09:20:04 PM | Garbee | This is why I no longer recommend anything this company does.
09:20:29 PM | pyrosrock | no longer... why in the first place?
09:21:02 PM | Garbee | A few years ago their stuff was pretty good and support was at *least* decent compared to others. Things have really gone downhill in the past ~5 years between me and HP.
09:21:47 PM | Garbee | and now with their Cloud service being down and no real explination... "It runs, but you can't talk to it."... I have just lost complete faith in what they do.
09:22:00 PM | Garbee | Which is actuall *pathetic* of HP considering they run the US Military's networks and systems.
09:22:08 PM | Garbee | You think they could diagnose a problem like this pretty rapidly and fix it.
09:22:33 PM | _Jot_ | that's why cloud should be a backup-solution, never the main one
09:22:34 PM | Garbee | So now, I have a list of things I wanted to get done with WPD but I can't because we can't talk to the servers.
09:22:49 PM | Garbee | _Jot_, This is a site running on distributed servers.
09:23:26 PM | Garbee | Although I am pretty sure our Sys Op is done with HP for the site. He seemed throughly upset (to say the least) when he was in the chatroom a while ago.
09:23:28 PM | _Jot_ | sounds like it's running really good and fast, keeping ahead of you all the time
09:23:35 PM | Garbee | thoroughly*
09:24:30 PM | Garbee | _Jot_, Normally I love your odd little jokes, they are quite funny. But there is no amount of jokes in this situation that can make me not a mix of so many bad emotions.
