07:18:43 PM | GoodGuy | Before.. I watch a lot of QVC

07:20:41 PM | gpop7 | GooGood idea Bailey. May you be blessed with your project.
07:21:18 PM | tic-toc | Good luck to you....
07:21:27 PM | gpop7 | Sorry Sorry ,Good idea

07:24:41 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, you breaking things by accident from taking apart everything, how is that different from normal?
07:25:15 PM | pyrosrock | is it just me or is the chat room super slow today?
07:26:06 PM | _Jot_ | people are just disgusted by my humour and turned away from the room I think
07:26:19 PM | tic-toc | Can the chat room fix the NHL ? :(
07:26:37 PM | albertr | M$ ?????
07:28:22 PM | rusty9090 | double your housefires with the new driver.
07:28:55 PM | _Jot_ | darn, this nvidia-driver doesn't do anything! it must be broken
07:29:06 PM | _Jot_ | but Jot, you are using an AMD based videocard
07:29:17 PM | _Jot_ | well, RobbieF didn't say anything about not using it with that!
07:29:39 PM | troy74 | i have been using an invisibility cloak at work for years
07:29:55 PM | _Jot_ | how, troy74?
07:30:13 PM | troy74 | turn off the lights
07:30:30 PM | _Jot_ | newsflash: Hillary thinks we're amazing. Thanks Hillary!
07:31:11 PM | tic-toc | who?
07:31:25 PM | albertr | Netflix needs Silverligt RIGHT? another M$
07:31:44 PM | chrisreich | Hillary - what ever happened to the category 5 live fish?
07:32:08 PM | tic-toc | WHAAAT
07:32:09 PM | rusty9090 | Rythmbox can copy to ipods =)
07:32:42 PM | tic-toc | play on linux wont work?
07:34:07 PM | Guest_5640 | rusty9090 rythmbox works great
07:34:15 PM | Hillary | good question...i am lookin at that fish as we speak.
07:34:21 PM | Hillary | not in line of sight of camera or BSP
07:34:58 PM | _Jot_ | Hillary, we mean the fish, not RobbieF who is weak as a fish
07:35:04 PM | RobbieF | http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_iPod_managers
07:35:08 PM | T0B33 | my hard drive still has not died. Any one know why? haha its stopped clicking all of a sudden too. RobbieF i think this HD has been in the tardis and its got the time lords regeneration ability :O
07:35:48 PM | albertr | I agree RobbieF
07:35:56 PM | _Jot_ | T0b33, it is possible it had some spare sectors, and the part where the clicking happened died, and it doesn't use that anymore but the spare sectors
07:36:29 PM | _Jot_ | make sure you have backups, and do a SMART-test or use the test from the manufacturer to check it
07:36:39 PM | T0B33 | Is that True RobbieF what _Jot_ said?
07:37:25 PM | iamboriskarloff | Media Monkey works great for me - but it's still Windows only.
07:37:35 PM | T0B33 | My hard drive has stopped clicking and it has not died after 7 months RobbieF? So confused
07:38:04 PM | pyrosrock | RobbieF he needs to make sure he is using the right disk
07:38:12 PM | T0B33 | No crashes its like its regenerated :S
07:38:27 PM | T0B33 | I thought if the heads are ruined it cant just fix its self
07:38:41 PM | T0B33 | bad sectors on disk i can get my head around :S
07:38:50 PM | tic-toc | I will
07:38:56 PM | pyrosrock | RobbieF if it is a PPC devise it needs the PPC disk
07:38:58 PM | GoodGuy | Where is Christa when you need her :-)
07:39:31 PM | _Jot_ | it depends on why it clicks, it can click because a part of the disk is bad, and it moves back to the beginning to reset itsself and that can be the clicking you hear
07:40:31 PM | _Jot_ | then when it stops using that, it can read things correctly, and doesn't have to move to the beginning to reset anymore, so no more clicking
07:41:20 PM | T0B33 | RobbieF can you give me your opinion? I will never trust this drive but its odd how its not dead :S
07:41:36 PM | pyrosrock | RobbieF is there a database?
07:41:46 PM | pyrosrock | like a online one?
07:41:47 PM | T0B33 | _Jot_ it does one click when i power my la[top down
07:41:55 PM | T0B33 | laptop*
07:42:08 PM | T0B33 | Only a small click tho and its one click only just click and off
07:42:13 PM | rusty9090 | my portable drive clicks when i shut it down too
07:42:21 PM | GoodGuy | If you read Yahoo messages, someone uses strange variations to bypass Yahoo filters
07:42:38 PM | _Jot_ | T0b33, yeah, when you turn off your laptop, it will move the heads to a special area where movement doesn't crash the heads against the disk
07:42:44 PM | GoodGuy | Humans with a brain can figure out what the poster intends
07:43:29 PM | T0B33 | So the one click when powering off is not bad _Jot_ ?
07:44:04 PM | GoodGuy | I saw some poster use two characters together to bypass racist filters
07:44:37 PM | GoodGuy | Iirc one was a special character
07:44:41 PM | T0B33 | Oh _Jot_ it was given to me by a friend. Also when you click on something you hear the disk spin it sounds like your booting off a live Ubuntu CD
07:44:44 PM | _Jot_ | T0b33, no, and that clicking you hear more often is probably the same thing, it turning off and on again because something went wrong so it resets itsself
07:44:55 PM | Hillary | any questions???
07:45:14 PM | _Jot_ | T0b33, that is why you want to run smart-tests on it or the tests from the manufacturer, which will tell you if the disk is bad, going bad or not etc
07:45:50 PM | T0B33 | _Jot_ i did and they all came back good. But i installed windows on it not long ago and it BSOD
07:45:50 PM | Hillary | tobee repost Q
07:46:03 PM | _Jot_ | t0b33, could be memory too
07:46:26 PM | pyrosrock | RobbieF what do regested users get that others dont?
07:46:48 PM | GoodGuy | Over the Rainbow
07:47:00 PM | T0B33 | Hmm. _Jot_ i need to do more tests and i will stick this HD in my netbook and see if i get a BS off it :)
07:47:02 PM | iamboriskarloff | A bar code tattoo
07:47:12 PM | tic-toc | free coffee??
07:47:29 PM | iamboriskarloff | Click race sucks
07:47:37 PM | _Jot_ | Apart from the awesome, wonderful, amazing picters etc, unfortunatly, there are also photos of RobbieF in the gallery
07:47:38 PM | treedstamg | lets do a click race now
07:47:40 PM | T0B33 | Oh and _Jot_ it has gone slower
07:48:01 PM | iamboriskarloff | Click race only works if you have low latency - i.e. in the US or Canada
07:48:13 PM | _Jot_ | t0b33, most often that means there are bad parts that it has to re-read, that's why you want to check the smart-reports, to see if there are any re-allocated sectors
07:48:36 PM | T0B33 | _Jot_ i checked and it has none :S
07:48:42 PM | T0B33 | I did 5 tests on it
07:48:46 PM | T0B33 | not long agao
07:48:48 PM | T0B33 | ago*
07:48:56 PM | tic-toc | Now Im getting cold feet
07:49:22 PM | treedstamg | hello hillary
07:49:27 PM | _Jot_ | t0b33, so also checked the values from smartctl?
07:49:41 PM | Hillary | hey there treedstamg
07:50:07 PM | T0B33 | I will check those _Jot_ This tests were 4 months ago. I will do more after the show :)
07:50:24 PM | T0B33 | i did a few small omnes few days ago
07:50:31 PM | T0B33 | ones*
07:50:40 PM | T0B33 | Thanks for the tips :)
07:51:00 PM | _Jot_ | t0b33, I don't always know what the values mean from smartctl, but I know with those if it does show odd values or errors, or reallocated sectors etc, it can be a bad drive
07:51:43 PM | T0B33 | This is a very odd odd hard drive. If it had windows on it i could tell easier. Hardware fault dont always show on Linux
07:51:54 PM | albertr | does this show cover any Android news or aything else of Android?
07:52:04 PM | T0B33 | Windows loves BSOD at me so i think i know how to bring it to light xD
07:52:24 PM | treedstamg | Hillary are you and you new husband using Linux yet?? :-)
07:52:35 PM | tic-toc | load that new nvidia driver Robbie.
07:52:40 PM | _Jot_ | yeah, windows can crash much easier tob33 :)
07:52:43 PM | pyrosrock | can i alow a non admin user to mount a hd so they can watch movies on my movies hd in ubuntu? RobbieF Hillary
07:53:08 PM | Guest_9690 | Just stumbled across your show yesterday so I thought I'd catch you tonight live. In barrie daily usually.. Looking good, and thanks.
07:53:10 PM | tic-toc | thats private
07:53:13 PM | T0B33 | RobbieF do you have any good hard drive scanning tools that are good and dont lie to me haha
07:53:19 PM | _Jot_ | t0b33, but at least you know, if a disk shows any errors, it means it is already so bad that it went throught he spare areas and such, so it is already not trusted anymore
07:53:32 PM | pyrosrock | but preferably only the one hd cause others have private data RobbieF
07:54:26 PM | tic-toc | really like Zorin 6.1 core
07:54:30 PM | T0B33 | _Jot_ i will never ever trust this drive one because its 160 GB and i dont have a backup drive so i will store stuff on it without backing up and 2 its dodgy and creeping me out haha
07:55:00 PM | Hillary | Thanks Guest!
07:55:00 PM | pyrosrock | RobbieF no its internal
07:55:05 PM | _Jot_ | do get backups, even if it is just on dvd or something
07:55:48 PM | T0B33 | Yeah _Jot_ i need better back up solutions than the ones i got now. I only have my picz backed up
07:56:14 PM | _Jot_ | I wonder if Hillary makes backups
07:56:32 PM | T0B33 | Good question >:) Do you Hillary? muhhahahaha
07:56:56 PM | albertr | the user has to bei in the cdrom:x:24:user group
07:56:58 PM | tic-toc | that looked like a no
07:57:32 PM | tic-toc | clingy lol
07:57:53 PM | albertr | thanks for the show ;^)
07:58:01 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, we would love a daily Hillary and RobbieF show
07:58:07 PM | _Jot_ | feel free to come to my home and do that every day
07:58:15 PM | tic-toc | do more than one show a week
07:58:21 PM | troy74 | good show,guys
07:58:29 PM | Mathman47 | Thanks for the show Robbie & Hillary.
07:58:38 PM | rusty9090 | great show (:
07:58:51 PM | T0B33 | Multitasking xD
07:58:57 PM | troy74 | talking about gerbils
07:59:11 PM | gpop7 | Thank you Bailey for being on. Goodnight everyone.
07:59:24 PM | tic-toc | pellets meet table.com
07:59:36 PM | tic-toc | bye
07:59:42 PM | _Jot_ | gerbils meet hammer dot com?
07:59:55 PM | _Jot_ | gerbils on 'does it blend?'
07:59:58 PM | troy74 | warfin the terrible meets the gerbs
08:00:01 PM | Hillary | hahahahahaha
08:00:02 PM | Hillary | thats mean!
08:00:16 PM | gpop7 | Have great week. See you next time. same time same station.
08:00:18 PM | _Jot_ | well at least it is not hillary on 'does it blend?'
08:00:28 PM | Hillary | thanks everybody!!!
08:00:28 PM | T0B33 | See ya guys great show RobbieF and thanks for coming in Hillary xD Thanks for the help every one
08:00:31 PM | _Jot_ | and I didn't mention they weren't the blend-ee-s
08:04:20 PM | _Jot_ | by the way, I have nothing against gerbils, I even take care of lots of mice
08:05:23 PM | _Jot_ | I even know how to tell the males from the females, the male ones have balls, and the female ones have lasers or red lights
08:13:53 PM | T0B33 | _Jot_ i know exactly what to do with this HD xD
08:14:22 PM | _Jot_ | see how fast it can work in the real world by throwing it?
08:16:54 PM | T0B33 | Close! But nah i have a better solution hehe xD
08:16:55 PM | T0B33 | I will use my custom made ubuntu isos to run my laptop in memory and use the HD to store a virtual machine. SInce i have no use for a VM i wont care if it dies or i will use DD to store my custom iso on it and boot the iso from the HD in to my memory so if it does crash my laptop wont crash because my OS is loaded in memory and i doubt doing this will strain it too much. One way of making the best out of something haha
08:17:28 PM | _Jot_ | yeah, and if you store stuff on it anyway, don't store stuff you can't lose
08:20:15 PM | T0B33 | Oh i wont store anything on it. If i use unetbootin or dd on it i cant store anything on it because i will use the whole disk. Unless i partition it but then again i could use one partition for Vms and one for my OS. I have another HD that a friend gave me that is destroyed. i might do the same to that one
08:21:06 PM | _Jot_ | do remember that a broken harddrive may need more power etc so it isn't always useful
08:21:29 PM | _Jot_ | and depending on how it is broken, if it short-circuits it can break other things
08:22:34 PM | T0B33 | Wow! It can really do that _Jot_? :O The other HD when i used it the bios recognized it as two HDs and that is impossible on a netbook and its not partitioned in any way :O Then i rebooted and it came up as one :S
08:23:04 PM | RobbieF | thanks gang! :) Hope you had fun tonight. Something a little different for you.
08:23:18 PM | _Jot_ | it can do that if it doesn't respond properly, but that usually isn't too bad
08:23:44 PM | _Jot_ | but short-circuits in computers can break other things because they have protection, but that wears out stuff extra fast too
08:24:45 PM | T0B33 | So it could possible harm my motherboard? My laptop does go dead hot when using this HD but HDs go hot anyway but why do i get the feeling that this laptop is not suppose to make me sweat?
08:25:24 PM | _Jot_ | yeah, that sounds like it has issues and you probably don't want to use that
08:25:45 PM | _Jot_ | after all heat is a form of energy, and it shows that it is generating a lot of power, but not using it, so it just turns it to heat
08:26:23 PM | _Jot_ | of course, everything gets warm from power so it can be normal, but if it gets more toasty than normal, then you don't want to use that disk
08:28:00 PM | T0B33 | _Jot_ i can smell the heat right now. Its thick. Why does a dodgy HD use more power _Jot_ is it the board on it that messes up?
08:28:14 PM | T0B33 | be right back coffee
08:28:50 PM | _Jot_ | well, a computer is basically a lot of switches, and it uses electricity to change them and send the power to places so stuff happens
08:29:26 PM | _Jot_ | then, if something goes bad, it gets send to the wrong places or it needs more electricity to get there, because a wire or switch goes bad, and that means wasted power
08:30:25 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, it was a nice show, Bailey was nice too
08:31:42 PM | RobbieF | Thanks Jot.
08:33:53 PM | _Jot_ | about power, you can see it easily yourself too, for example, if you use an extension cable, and keep it rolled up and put a lot of power on it, it can heat up a lot and even cause fire but when you roll it out completely and put the same amount of power on it, it won't get so hot
08:34:50 PM | _Jot_ | so basically, bad connects that normally work well, can cause big problems, because energy like in power and heat always goes somewhere
08:35:51 PM | T0B33 | That is very good information _Jot_ Thank you :) So its possible that my HD could drain allot of power and burn my mother board up? Or my HD wil store power which it wont use and blow? SOmething like this happened to one of my friends his laptop poped and just died.
08:36:39 PM | _Jot_ | yeah, stuff like that could happen, also things are made to get hot, but only up to a point
08:37:19 PM | _Jot_ | of course it should be possible to fix such stuff, but often it isn't really possible to do that easily without so much expensive tools that it isn't worth it
08:40:22 PM | _Jot_ | sorry RobbieF, time to go to bed for you, I see your daughter is coming to warn you or its no desert for you tomorrow
08:40:52 PM | RobbieF | seeya bro
08:40:55 PM | RobbieF | have a great night!
08:41:04 PM | _Jot_ | hey! I am not going
08:41:07 PM | T0B33 | This HD that is really messed up (Not the clicky one) 3 HDs have died in a friends laptop during the past 2 years. He hits them allot but could it be possible that his first failed HD did something to his laptop causing all the others to die? I gave him my healthy one. Died in 3 weeks in his laptop with 60000 bad sectors
08:41:09 PM | RobbieF | oh
08:41:10 PM | RobbieF | haha
08:41:38 PM | _Jot_ | tob33, yeah, it could be, and it could also be that the harddisk can recover when it gets good power again
08:41:50 PM | _Jot_ | often what happens, is that something breaks, and keeps asking too much power and wears out the power supply
08:42:06 PM | _Jot_ | so, the power supply doesn't work properly anymore, and then other stuff breaks too
08:43:28 PM | _Jot_ | the thing about electricity is, it is always a closed circuit, so everything is connected together, so if one part goes bad, the power coming and going from that part can become bad too
08:43:55 PM | robgor | hey guys how can u tell if a ssd is failing do they slowly die or fail without warning
08:44:28 PM | RobbieF | usually no warning
08:44:35 PM | RobbieF | but sometimes can lose access to certain files first
08:44:35 PM | _Jot_ | all ssds will fail, because they are only designed for a certain number of writing-operations
08:44:57 PM | RobbieF | admittedly though Jot, it is a very high number... as long as the user doesn't defrag ;)
08:45:09 PM | _Jot_ | yep, definatly
08:45:31 PM | T0B33 | He told me what he does and its really bad but i know people who have dropped them down stairs and still live some how. So there could be something wrong with his laptop? Maybe the laptop caused his first HD to fail and the HD failing never made the laptop faulty at all :S
08:45:50 PM | robgor | RobbieF hmm might explain why I can log into zorin os after entering in my password it says loggin in and just stays at that
08:46:00 PM | T0B33 | Thank you for the intel _Jot_ Wish i did not have ADHD i would have stayed at college and learned all this :(
08:46:42 PM | _Jot_ | T0b33, in my experience, yes, it can be a bad laptop, and yes, laptops are designed to drop so yes, sometimes they can live, but it's not all exact science, so one thing can have issues and not another
08:47:55 PM | _Jot_ | with laptops, the powersupply and motherboard are often the same thing, so replacing it is often a case of 'buy a new one'
08:48:41 PM | _Jot_ | but if you have known good harddrives that fail, especially more than one, and in a few months, then it could still be a bad batch of harddisks if they are fromt he same store and manufacturer
08:50:00 PM | _Jot_ | and yeah, of course it could be that the laptop was bad from the beginning that made the drives fail, or it could be that the first drive broke something, but the effect is the same
08:50:51 PM | T0B33 | All this stuff you speak off is what i was learning at college and you make it sound more clearer than my teachers did! Well he leaves his laptop on his bed 24-7 and never turns it off. He uses his laptop as a server and uses skype and plays like 2 games all at once on it and he hits it and slams the lid on it when it goes slow. He has not looked after his laptop well and he has spilt drinks on it. So what you say about the laptop been faulty wo
08:50:56 PM | _Jot_ | that's why I prefer normal computers cause it is easier to swap out parts, and if more parts go bad, take a known good computer and try parts from the bad one to see if the good computer will fail too to find out what 'doesn't work anymore
08:51:44 PM | T0B33 | But the 1st drive is what gets me
08:51:50 PM | _Jot_ | well, if he spills stuff on it, that can be why it breaks too of course, cause laptops aren't made for that :) then you get stuff in the laptop that can cause short-circuits and weird effects
08:52:28 PM | _Jot_ | unfortunatly after a point you can't say for sure if the laptop was broken from the beginning, or if the behaviour caused it
08:53:23 PM | _Jot_ | generally, electric stuff can handle amazing amounts of abuse, but it's not foolproof
08:54:31 PM | T0B33 | Yeah i like desktops but i like laptops because with my ADHD i cant stay still too long so with laptops and netbooks i can walk around with them. I had a Acer aspire x1300 in 2009 and it was faulty i should have sent it back but i needed a computer for college and then in 2011 a thunderstorm finishes it off :( Well i would try this HD in my netbook but dont want to risk my netbook :(
08:55:24 PM | _Jot_ | yeah, laptops aren't really made to keep on all the time etc, but they still can be useful like that
08:56:05 PM | _Jot_ | it's why I have a few of those external drive-casings and connectors, so I can connect naked drives to USB for testing and copying etc
08:56:37 PM | _Jot_ | generally it's not so risky that way, and you can touch the disk to see if they get more hot than normal etc
08:56:57 PM | T0B33 | How do you know all this _Jot_? Did you learn by doing like me or did you go to college or something?
08:57:24 PM | _Jot_ | I learned from doing and books and then from internet
08:57:48 PM | _Jot_ | when I started with computers, I first got a ZX spectrum with 16KB memory, that was a really small box
08:58:15 PM | _Jot_ | then I got an MSX, that was about two to three times as big, like an amiga or commodore 64 etc, but it was more powerful
08:58:41 PM | _Jot_ | then I got a PC, and that was like a VCR and so on, like computers now, but graphics etc were worse
08:58:57 PM | _Jot_ | so I wanted to know why it could do so little, and what was inside that the box had to be so big etc
08:59:48 PM | _Jot_ | I already knew a bit about programming etc from all the previous computers too, so I had a general idea, how things fit together, and that helped too
09:00:16 PM | _Jot_ | and of course it came with manuals that were actually good etc
09:01:00 PM | _Jot_ | and then you go further and further with things, computers developed, and when parts failed, you learned how to replace them etc
09:01:33 PM | _Jot_ | usually it wasn't a lot different, but you always learned because even if you did something before, things changed a little, so you still learned
09:01:59 PM | _Jot_ | like different memory-connectors, how processors are connected, and so on
09:02:58 PM | T0B33 | Wish i could read on stuff like that. My first computer was a windows 98 machine. Ah curiosity xD My adhd fuels mine and my ability to be creative and its how i learned so much. That is kinda how i learned. I cant read manuals or read things my ADHD distracts me so i have to learn by doing and playing about but i know enough to get paid. Wish i could go further tho. :(
09:04:19 PM | _Jot_ | sounds like a good way :) and yeah, going further is always good, but it's mostly about keeping up skills, cause things change, but not so much
09:06:33 PM | _Jot_ | I mean, take a look at RobbieF, even he still learns, for example about reading manuals about washers and stuff, even though he acts like he knows everything already
09:08:16 PM | T0B33 | ADHD is good for drawing and writing stories because your mind is constantly switched on and hypo. So your imagination has no limits. Bad thing is you cant stay still relax and read a nice manual and you cant switch off when you want too. So its hard to listen in class lol Hard to explain
09:08:37 PM | T0B33 | Washers?
09:08:54 PM | T0B33 | RobbieF knows allot i would say haha
09:09:12 PM | T0B33 | Chuck a question at him he has the brain power that can rival google
09:09:18 PM | _Jot_ | yeah, RobbieF put together the server and the washers are needed for the cpu-cooler, because the fan on it causes vibrations that break stuff, and the washers dampen it
09:09:57 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF didn't read the manual, so he didn't see step 1) put washers on the cooler, and so now the server will break before its time
09:10:45 PM | _Jot_ | and I think the ADHD thing just means you can still do the same stuff, it just has to be in a different form or order sometimes
09:11:07 PM | _Jot_ | I mean, you can pay attention long enough for category5 :)
09:15:11 PM | T0B33 | _Jot_ its how i was able to control it. It makes you stubborn because you tend to do things your way. I went my whole life not knowing that what i had was not normal. Only recently i realized that there was a name for all my symptoms. Only because i gone so long without treatment i dont really need it and i cant anyways because you have to be diagnosed as a child. Its when you start a new job its hard because you slip in to a world of your own w
09:16:18 PM | T0B33 | and i cant tell my mum about it because i think she is ashamed of it for some reason so that makes me think that she has it which would make sense because she does similer things i do
09:17:07 PM | _Jot_ | or it could be she blames herself that you have it :) I have no idea of course, I don't know enough about it
09:18:03 PM | _Jot_ | but generally, doing things similar to somebody you live with and that has the same genetics doesn't sound that odd :)
09:18:42 PM | _Jot_ | RobbieF, spock mooned us while you were away
