07:46:35 PM | IslandPhotograph | WOW! There's a term I haven't heard for a while.
07:46:38 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | so do I take it out of raid mode or what, it is setup as a raid 5 now
07:46:55 PM | IslandPhotograph | Larry LuJack!
07:47:37 PM | revdjenk | I talked to a woman in a dr's office in Erie PA. She was one of the original programmers on the DEC alpha chip. She was one of few women in tech at that time!

07:49:49 PM | sr_wences | I think I have 5 machines in my house running UBUNTU Mate.
07:50:01 PM | sr_wences | Martin Wimpole.
07:50:16 PM | revdjenk | sr_wences: I am a boring person, been with Mint since 2008 (but with Cinnamon)
07:50:31 PM | GoodGuy98 | I get a MATE panel error now and then... seems to work fine if I ignore the error
07:50:42 PM | IslandPhotograph | So, spicy boring??
07:50:52 PM | revdjenk | IslandPhotograph: hee hee
07:51:05 PM | revdjenk | just not by the tablespoon!
07:51:15 PM | IslandPhotograph | hahaha
07:51:16 PM | JeffWeston | Hahaja
07:51:19 PM | GoodGuy98 | I use that also revdjenk .. have Ubunti MATE installed as a second linux

07:52:46 PM | revdjenk | that's what I was hinting at... ah no and never!
07:52:53 PM | GoodGuy98 | I have Win7 - Win10 - Ubuntu MATE- Mythbuntu 14.04 (not setup) - Mint 17.3 Cinnamon
07:52:54 PM | JeffWeston | Darn fat fingers and failed autocorrect haha
07:53:12 PM | revdjenk | GoodGuy98: 18 beta came available today
07:53:16 PM | IslandPhotograph | yeah, been having same issue
07:53:40 PM | GoodGuy98 | Thanks revdjenk .. I looked yesterday and didnt see anything yet
07:54:02 PM | GoodGuy98 | I will probably wait for it to go stable
07:54:48 PM | IslandPhotograph | agrred. always wait for a brief catch-up period

07:56:30 PM | SoundPro69 | RobbieF or JeffWeston: Question: With the old method, once I am done adding the new hard drive, formatting and copying all my home folder's info into it: How do I tell Linux that now my home partition (or folder) will be dev/sd?/... please?
07:56:44 PM | revdjenk | GoodGuy98: me too
07:57:24 PM | jlim | RobbieF: you don't like the new gnome 3?

07:57:36 PM | jlim | just say yes
07:57:41 PM | Garbee | Also, best to use GUUID's vs /dev/ assignment.
07:57:43 PM | GoodGuy98 | fstab updates SoundPro69
07:58:00 PM | Garbee | That way in case the drive path changes the fstab doesn't change.
07:58:09 PM | Garbee | fsdisk edit/fstab edit*
07:58:14 PM | revdjenk | go longer RobbieF !!!
07:58:16 PM | Garbee | /etc/fstab

08:02:26 PM | Songbird | lol
08:02:29 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | she used it correctly
08:02:33 PM | Songbird | Take care all! :D
08:03:30 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | so anyone have any recommendations on setting up unraid 6 with a promise controller setup as a raid 5
08:04:00 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | machine has like 6-8 drives in it
08:04:15 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | 300 gig to 1.2 tb
08:04:39 PM | NateUK | i tried unraid .. didnt like it ... found it to be very clunky for a file system .. so sorry cannot help on that one
08:05:49 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | I thank you NateUK and I tried giving creds for the kodi build also
08:06:06 PM | NateUK | thanks .. dooley_da_vulcan ..
08:06:19 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | you are welcome.
08:06:21 PM | NateUK | sorry must of missed it .. havent been on irc ..
08:06:51 PM | NateUK | I am sticking with freenas ... better handle of file system ... also do not have to pay for extra hd's
08:06:56 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | here in the room a bit ago when Robbie was telling how to find Cat5 on Kodi
08:07:18 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | does it do the app serving as well
08:07:52 PM | RobbieF | Thanks all!
08:08:06 PM | NateUK | yes .. i run plex .. sickbeard and also virtualbox ... all from it .. it uses jails before even docker was a thing .. uses ZFS if you have heard of it which is an up and coming file system even on linux ...
08:08:13 PM | GoodGuy98 | I thought I watched a video and the creator said Unraid had Proxmox or something like it
08:08:36 PM | NateUK | Proxmox is awsome ... GoodGuy98
08:09:02 PM | GoodGuy98 | I downloaded a video about it, but haven't watched it yet
08:09:24 PM | GoodGuy98 | HAK5 did a show on it a year or more ago also
08:10:35 PM | GoodGuy98 | My PC is a wiring disaster... I have a spare hard drive I would like to add, but I don't feel well enough to mess with it
08:10:46 PM | NateUK | yeah there have been some podcasts covering it ... was a very good virtual system ... the problem i had in the end was clustering ... for some reason back on version 2 it had many problems .. in the end had to go other ways ...
08:11:09 PM | NateUK | but as a single system very good
08:11:10 PM | GoodGuy98 | It is an Antec 900 case and it looks like you have to pull a cage out
08:11:19 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | will check into it, so it looks like unraid6 is doing similar while coming to the party late? same features as freenas with ZFS and using jails?
08:11:40 PM | GoodGuy98 | The power supply isnt modular and it looks like a plate of pasta it is so messy
08:12:19 PM | NateUK | very much so dooley_da_vulcan ... FreeNas is a major BSD factor ... and the creators of FreeNas are major server system suppliers
08:12:38 PM | NateUK | i would say cable clips GoodGuy98 lol but i know people who hate them lol
08:13:42 PM | GoodGuy98 | It looks like I would have to disconnect wires all over and I am hurting enough where I am not in the mod
08:13:45 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | what configuration will I want to do with the promise card? take it out of raid mode, still use it? it is a raid 5 setup now
08:14:25 PM | GoodGuy98 | I have a bunch of cable ties laying around, but the wires are weaved all over
08:14:59 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | GoodGuy98 I feel your pain, I am so messed up I fail to go down stairs to take pain meds, so I have sat in bed to watch tonights show with live show on tv and laptop
08:15:08 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | I hope you get to feeling better
08:15:20 PM | NateUK | I use no hardware raid perosnally .. the main reason for this .. what happens if your hardware raid dies ... need to move to a new server etc ? ... you are screwed unless you have massive backups ... I always use software raid ok .. not always the best solution but ZFS in FreeNas does all the work for you
08:15:30 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | for the chat room
08:16:04 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | so be best to just use the 6 sata controllers built into the main board
08:16:46 PM | NateUK | thats my perosnal choice for the server software to do it itself .. each to their own .. but I can move my raid to another server if the server dies ...
08:16:59 PM | GoodGuy98 | I thought the latest Linux builds have ZFS builtin
08:17:40 PM | GoodGuy98 | Maybe Mint 18 will include it
08:17:51 PM | NateUK | they do GoodGuy98 and Ubuntu are supporting it "ish" but Linux ZFS is way behind all the nice features of BSD .. considering BSD are the lead in it for the most part
08:18:35 PM | NateUK | do not get me wrong here .. I use as many ubuntu servers as possible for web servers etc ... but as a backbone they are all on ZFS on FreeNAS
08:19:24 PM | NateUK | my thinkpad is Ubuntu-Mate ... and is the best for development ... so I believe in a tool for each thing .. but suggest Windows 10 and I will cry lol
08:19:35 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | BSD is what mac os is written in is it not
08:19:44 PM | NateUK | sort of
08:19:57 PM | GoodGuy98 | modified heavily dooley_da_vulcan
08:20:12 PM | NateUK | their backbone is much of BSD but they bring so much more to the table for their users
08:20:44 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | but isn't that why they share the security features of linux
08:20:51 PM | GoodGuy98 | yes high price tags included at no extra charge... for them anyway! :-)
08:20:53 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | or similar
08:21:32 PM | NateUK | lol GoodGuy98 I am sitting on a macbook pro at the moment lol .. the price is way to heavy ... but the build is very good ...
08:22:16 PM | GoodGuy98 | I havent looked in quite awhile, but I thought I read that BSD wants to use the whole hard drive for the boot drive
08:22:34 PM | NateUK | yes very much so dooley_da_vulcan ... BSD and Linux run close lines .. but each have their pros and cons ...
08:22:43 PM | NateUK | same as unraid ...
08:22:59 PM | GoodGuy98 | so I didnt install it because I have multiple partiitions with various OSes
08:23:02 PM | NateUK | so using a usb stick is the best way
08:23:18 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | if I had kids at home wanting games and finances was an issue, I would think you could make them happy with each one getting a retro pi system and still be ahead financially
08:23:23 PM | NateUK | I do not use BSD directly .. only backbone ..
08:23:33 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | so does freenas load off of a flashdrive also
08:23:43 PM | NateUK | yes dooley_da_vulcan
08:24:01 PM | GoodGuy98 | I have played with NAS4Free in a Virtualbox VM
08:24:31 PM | NateUK | but if it goes down unlike unraid .. you dont need to get a code from FreeNAS to reinstall the raid (volumes as they are called)
08:24:41 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | that does not mean much anymore when you can get them in almost any size... I seen a 128 usb 3 so what the heck, saying it fits on a flash drive really does not mean a lot
08:24:54 PM | NateUK | NAS4Free is very simular to FreeBSD
08:24:54 PM | GoodGuy98 | Used to have it on an old PC, but that hardware died... It wouldn't update properly and finally just gave up the ghost
08:25:11 PM | NateUK | I have mine running on 8gig
08:25:22 PM | NateUK | USB
08:25:31 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | h, so it seems unraid is mimicking freenas and throwing on a cash cabel
08:25:42 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | cable
08:26:37 PM | GoodGuy98 | I was thinking of emailing Alan Jude of Jupiter Broadcasting and asking if I can share a hard drive with other Oses.. Just never got around to it
08:26:43 PM | NateUK | I get a company has to make money to survive .. however i would have paid for a support thing from unraid .. but to charge me for harddrives that I have had to pay for in the beginning is harsh in my books
08:26:47 PM | GoodGuy98 | He would know if anyone does
08:27:04 PM | NateUK | Allan Jude ;) GoodGuy98 with two l's lol
08:27:16 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | I am afraid that the retro games and the abandon ware might all fade away behind a cash wall and manufacturers that were bought and died away will come out wanting to chase people
08:27:31 PM | GoodGuy98 | sorry.. my middle name is Alan, so I am used to that :-)
08:28:04 PM | NateUK | hahah my late father was with one l ... thats why i remember Allan's cause it was weird to me lol
08:28:35 PM | NateUK | but to say .. I would ask Allan ... yes defo ... he is the best person on that ..
08:28:37 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | charging you more for more of your own hardware is a bit much it seems, not that you get more from them for the extra fee
08:29:04 PM | GoodGuy98 | I thought UnRaid had all the extra virtualization features which FreeNas doesn't that I am aware of, but no expert here
08:29:09 PM | NateUK | yes dooley_da_vulcan also if you scp or rsync over it seems very clunky
08:29:40 PM | NateUK | FreeBSD has a plugin built in to run virtualbox in a webbrowser
08:29:52 PM | GoodGuy98 | Maybe UnRaid should add tiers.. a couple extra HDs for $20 etc
08:29:53 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | what speed of machine was you running on?
08:30:19 PM | NateUK | AMD FX(tm)-8350 Eight-Core Processor
08:30:27 PM | NateUK | thats my perosnal one
08:30:32 PM | GoodGuy98 | From zero to over $100 is a big jump for advanced home users
08:30:41 PM | NateUK | i have xeon's running for my company
08:30:58 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | so I could copy my VMs over and load up into the freenas virtual box
08:32:13 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | that is a bit of a jump. for anything to be clunky on an 8 core machine is unacceptable unless you had it doing loads of other stuff
08:33:02 PM | GoodGuy98 | My wife is a sweetie and would probably say yes if I asked nice enough.. but it would be unfair
08:33:31 PM | NateUK | yes also I have 4 network cards in my servers .. unraid uses 1 ... even when i link 2 by 2 .. it will only use one .. so speeds are very slow in my eyes
08:33:53 PM | GoodGuy98 | If she asked why do you need some super expensive chip like that.. no honest answer
08:34:20 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | Good night to you all, and thank you for the info. I will check it out. it doesnt have options to use other cards
08:34:27 PM | GoodGuy98 | Night dooley_da_vulcan
08:35:09 PM | GoodGuy98 | How do you get so many free slots for NIC's NateUK ?
08:35:33 PM | NateUK | nite dooley_da_vulcan take care
08:35:39 PM | NateUK | 4 card NIC card ..
08:35:43 PM | GoodGuy98 | I am just a home user
08:35:49 PM | dooley_da_vulcan | brought up the website and saved in favs. good night again to all
08:36:00 PM | GoodGuy98 | Hmm I didnt realize they made such a thing
08:36:35 PM | NateUK | yes ...
08:36:54 PM | GoodGuy98 | a couple years ago I used to watch a few episodes of a VODcast called Too Smart Guys
08:37:53 PM | GoodGuy98 | One time they discussed a gadget that seemed to plug into a motherboard slot and added an extra box with more slots and room for extra drives
08:37:53 PM | NateUK | i think i saw them .. they closed down a while ago right ?
08:38:20 PM | GoodGuy98 | I think so NateUK .. I used to watch in Miro and that seemed to dies
08:38:25 PM | GoodGuy98 | die
08:40:10 PM | NateUK | you could use something like an esata for home with connection to say an external box of storages
08:40:48 PM | NateUK | for servers something like a SAS card would also do the trick
08:42:36 PM | GoodGuy98 | I do have a couple brackets for eSATA.. my mobo has two external eSATA ports
08:43:18 PM | GoodGuy98 | and last week a local garage sage guy had a spare Gigabyte eSATA bracket for $1
08:43:32 PM | NateUK | you can find on amazon etc different storage external devices that use that .. it is like adding them directly to the motherboard
08:44:24 PM | GoodGuy98 | It had two ports and a powered molex connector in between.. have to hook it up to a connector
08:45:19 PM | GoodGuy98 | I thought it was kind of neat, but wish it had a plastic plug to prevent accidently touching it and shorting out
08:46:09 PM | NateUK | i would assume there were safe guards or would hope so
08:46:10 PM | GoodGuy98 | I found another one for sale at MicroCenter, so I picked that up as well
08:46:41 PM | GoodGuy98 | Misus the molex... My PC is so old it only has USB2
08:47:04 PM | GoodGuy98 | So ESATA is about as fast as it gets
08:47:28 PM | NateUK | nothing wrong with old tech ... some of the best pc's / laptops are old tech .. IBM ThickPad comes to mind
08:48:18 PM | GoodGuy98 | I already have two external hard drives connected which I use for occasional backups
08:48:26 PM | GoodGuy98 | smaller drives
08:48:59 PM | NateUK | I can pay what £69 english for a 2gig dual core thinkpad .. chuck a 120gig ssd (£30) in it .. and buy 2 gig more memory (£20) and still cheaper than a low end chromebook lol
08:49:32 PM | GoodGuy98 | with a couple extra eSATA connectors, I could connect a 2TB drive also with unplugging and replugging
08:50:08 PM | NateUK | just make sure your motherboard handles hotswap .. some even though they have an esata cannot do a good job of it
08:50:29 PM | GoodGuy98 | I am pretty much homebound, so laptops arent that useful in my situation
08:50:54 PM | GoodGuy98 | I just reboot rather that trust hot swap
08:51:54 PM | GoodGuy98 | I need to run.... typing too long hurts
08:52:10 PM | NateUK | ok ... have a good day or evening .. take care
08:52:16 PM | GoodGuy98 | Nice chatting NateUK ... thanks for the ideas
08:52:23 PM | GoodGuy98 | You also
