6:58:03 PM | SashaR | it's almost time!!!!
7:00:36 PM | GWG | Evening
7:02:23 PM | Dennis_Kelley | evening GWG
7:02:28 PM | GWG | Just got here
7:02:37 PM | bp9 | G'day Dennis
7:02:41 PM | GWG | Had to go check on a friend. He's trying to cope with a big problem
7:04:14 PM | ABQTKY | GWG, if it's that kind of problem, 'RS'
7:06:39 PM | Solbu | I use Kdenlive for video editing.
7:06:52 PM | benrob0329 | Blender is a good video editor
7:06:53 PM | GWG | His mother had a stroke, sadly. I went to try and cheer him up.
7:07:37 PM | bp9 | Robbie, for a strong machine like Sasha built, why not run windows in a virtual machine?
7:08:14 PM | ABQTKY | GWG, hopefully she had a minor stroke, but that's still not so good.
7:08:44 PM | bp9 | But what is Dave having trouble running on linux?
7:09:30 PM | SashaR | small things like some of his games... and also some video editing for GoPro
7:09:30 PM | Lyndon | hellos
7:09:40 PM | Lyndon | I'm ready for this
7:10:02 PM | Rev_Don | Linux is for people who want to play with their OS. Windows is for people who want to actually do something with their computer.
7:10:12 PM | bp9 | But you got steam for games, right?
7:10:32 PM | benrob0329 | SashaR: Blender and Kdenlive (kdenlive is much simpler) are great for video editing
7:10:33 PM | bp9 | That runs on linux as well?
7:10:36 PM | ABQTKY | Be nice, Ref_Don.
7:10:49 PM | benrob0329 | Rev_Don: I find that offencive as a productive and artistic Linux user
7:11:18 PM | Rev_Don | bp9, Steam on Linux only allows for a few games, and very few AAA games. For that you need Steam on Windows
7:11:34 PM | bp9 | A virtual machine lets you keep running your linux stuff while windows is running.
7:11:46 PM | Lyndon | you're on the wrong show here
7:11:48 PM | bp9 | Good point about frames per second.
7:12:21 PM | bp9 | Rev_Don, understood, thanks. :-)
7:12:26 PM | Lyndon | full house
7:12:45 PM | bp9 | I'm primarily a programmer, so that's where I'm coming from.
7:12:53 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Hi
7:13:01 PM | Lyndon | hi DK
7:13:04 PM | Lyndon | =)
7:13:06 PM | Dennis_Kelley | hi Lyndon
7:13:54 PM | Lyndon | Dennis_Kelley how are things?
7:13:54 PM | Skywriter64 | Hi,everyone from Brooklyn NY
7:14:15 PM | Dennis_Kelley | Been ok Lyndon. Busy!
7:14:16 PM | TheFu | If it needs an internet connection to work, I don't want it controlling anything important for my house.
7:14:18 PM | benrob0329 | RobbieF: the live feed needs flash :-(
7:14:26 PM | GWG | I use a Broadlink RM3 that sends an IR signal to a through-wall AC. Cost me $20
7:14:26 PM | Lyndon | me too =)
7:14:35 PM | Rev_Don | TheFU, I totally agree.
7:14:35 PM | TheFu | benrob0329: BITE you tongue!
7:14:51 PM | TheFu | s/you/your/
7:15:05 PM | benrob0329 | TheFu: live.cat5.tv doesn't work with flash disabled
7:15:07 PM | GWG | I added it to an install of Home Assistant, adding a temperature sensor and it does the same thing for me.
7:15:09 PM | GWG | Little more work
7:15:37 PM | benrob0329 | unless there is an addon I can enable to turn flowplayer into an html5 thing
7:15:56 PM | Rev_Don | benrob0329 No it doesn't. The live feed needs to get rid of Flash. In fact ALL Flash needs to die.
7:16:20 PM | Lyndon | I'm still wondering how this thing works...?
7:17:09 PM | bp9 | Lyndon, me too. Does this device replace your thermostat?
7:17:23 PM | Lyndon | uuhhh...
7:17:34 PM | Lyndon | idk
7:18:10 PM | Rev_Don | bp9. doubtful. All it will do is turn it on and off.
7:18:13 PM | Lyndon | but it controls a wall unit
7:18:14 PM | bp9 | It can't be, since you'd have to wire it in place of your thermostat.
7:19:32 PM | Lyndon | how do you connect it to the unit itself?
7:19:34 PM | TheFu | bp9: Not all A/C units are central - connected to a thermostat. Think "window A/C"
7:20:11 PM | TheFu | Lyndon: RF or IR?
7:20:29 PM | bp9 | TheFu: Even a window A/C contains a thermostat. It's built in, right?
7:20:31 PM | Lyndon | ohhh.. maybe
7:20:31 PM | TheFu | Newer wall A/C units have IR remotes ...
7:20:39 PM | Lyndon | yes they do
7:20:53 PM | Lyndon | hmm. interesting
7:20:54 PM | TheFu | bp9: Not that I've seen, but I live where A/C is a mandatory health requirement, not in Canada.
7:21:06 PM | Rev_Don | bp9, No. not all window units have a thermostat
7:21:35 PM | TheFu | GPS must be turned on? Huh?
7:21:46 PM | bp9 | I'm with Lyndon, still don't see how it connects to your A/C
7:21:50 PM | TheFu | That's a show-stopper for me.
7:22:02 PM | Lyndon | XD
7:22:29 PM | TheFu | It has an IR-blaster, like we used with VCRs to control CATV boxes ... perhaps.
7:22:29 PM | Lyndon | oook
7:22:56 PM | Lyndon | UHF?
7:23:02 PM | Lyndon | or IR?
7:23:24 PM | Lyndon | UHF doesnt have to be pointed at the unit itself
7:23:39 PM | Lyndon | IR does
7:23:57 PM | bp9 | Oh, so that won't work for me because my central aircon does not have a wireless remote
7:24:04 PM | TheFu | I'm stuck back on the GPS required problem.
7:24:12 PM | Lyndon | grab the box Sasha
7:24:22 PM | Lyndon | it'l be on the back
7:24:30 PM | TheFu | bp9: This is for wall A/C units, not central A/C.
7:24:35 PM | Lyndon | =)
7:24:56 PM | Lyndon | yes
7:25:01 PM | bp9 | TheFu, got it. Thanks. :-)
7:25:24 PM | Rev_Don | My daughters bought me a windows A/C unit a couple of years ago that requires a smart phone to operate. Unfortunately the software only works on Android 4.3 and earlier or iPhone 3's and earlier. Needless to say it's essentially useless. Devices like this are only as good as the support for software updates
7:25:28 PM | Lyndon | or just unplug it
7:25:40 PM | TheFu | So ... if we want to build this. Get a Pi-Zero for $5 and an IR blaster attachment for $3. ... then spend 6 months programming and BAMMMM.
7:26:07 PM | Lyndon | yeah!
7:26:10 PM | bp9 | TheFu: Now we're talking. LOL
7:26:11 PM | Lyndon | great idea!
7:26:20 PM | Lyndon | Maker power
7:26:57 PM | bp9 | So it replaces an iR controller. Can it control something other than an aircon?
7:26:58 PM | Lyndon | does it feel cooler?
7:26:59 PM | Rev_Don | bp9 You would need to replace the existing wall thermostat with an IOT thermostat.
7:27:04 PM | TheFu | I'm almost positive there's much more inside there.
7:27:20 PM | TheFu | OTOH, I haven't seen a wall A/C unit in a long, long, long, time.
7:27:44 PM | bp9 | Rev_Don: I'll stick with my regular thermostat, thanks. :-)
7:27:50 PM | Lyndon | my wall unit just has a knob
7:28:07 PM | Rev_Don | bp9 I agree. I hate IOT
7:28:10 PM | GWG | I still recommend my methodology. Much less expensive but more fun
7:28:15 PM | TheFu | IoT needs to die.
7:29:41 PM | TheFu | "Killer" doesn't always mean anything bad.
7:29:44 PM | Skywriter64 | Did the show freeze, again?
7:29:49 PM | TheFu | 4K video!
7:30:09 PM | TheFu | r-pi doesn't do 4K.
7:31:19 PM | Lyndon | the PI is still versatile
7:31:38 PM | TheFu | Lyndon: Yep. Using mine to watch CAT5.tv now!
7:31:48 PM | Lyndon | nice!
7:32:36 PM | TheFu | 4K video, GigE networking, SATA .... that isn't a Pi.
7:33:15 PM | bp9 | SBC: Single Board Computer?
7:33:30 PM | TheFu | Southern Bell Company?
7:33:56 PM | garywhite | I don't like IoT
7:34:39 PM | TheFu | What's your main laptop folks?
7:34:58 PM | Rev_Don | Thinkpad T420
7:35:06 PM | bp9 | Tandy TRS-80 model 100 and 102
7:35:32 PM | Lyndon | hawesome!
7:35:43 PM | garywhite | HP EliteBook 8460
7:36:20 PM | Skywriter64 | the show is back!
7:36:34 PM | Lyndon | still not used to that name..
7:37:15 PM | TheFu | Crypto-mining in a browser? Don't people just block javascript?
7:37:32 PM | TheFu | Robbie looks excited.
7:37:45 PM | Lyndon | hes thinking
7:37:48 PM | bp9 | hee hee
7:38:04 PM | bp9 | someone poke him, see if he reacts :-)\
7:38:05 PM | TheFu | What's he thinking? ideas ..... ?
7:38:15 PM | Lyndon | what is he looking at
7:38:46 PM | Lyndon | hahaha
7:38:46 PM | bp9 | He's probably thinking: I wonder what's for dinner?
7:38:56 PM | Rev_Don | TheFu Most people don't because 1: they don't know how, and 2: they don't care.
7:40:16 PM | bp9 | Robbie: Don't forget that crypto currency is easy to mine when it is first released
7:40:29 PM | bp9 | but gets harder to mine the more coins that are issued.
7:41:01 PM | garywhite | yeah, but the coins you can get while it's easily obtained will be worth more, and how do you mine in a browser?
7:41:05 PM | bp9 | So Monero is much younger than bitcoin so is much easier to mine than bitcoin.
7:41:35 PM | bp9 | It's only worth more if people think it's worth more.
7:41:52 PM | bp9 | You can mine in javascript while the calculations are simple.
7:42:07 PM | TheFu | Imagine how much good could be done if jquery.com did it.
7:42:32 PM | Lyndon | oh no
7:43:02 PM | Lyndon | not good for manufacturers
7:43:35 PM | Lyndon | what kind of metal?
7:43:48 PM | Lyndon | wow
7:44:11 PM | TheFu | Plastic 3d printing was supposed to be cost effective for homes a few years ago, based on all the little plastic things we buy. I just spent $10 on plastic fittings for some hiking gear.
7:44:39 PM | BobK54 | GE is 3D printing most of a new turboprop engine. 800 parts traditional become only 16 with the new method. I suspect replacing that ONE part in maintenance will be pretty expensive though
7:44:46 PM | Lyndon | cant be that that strong
7:44:52 PM | Lyndon | idk
7:44:57 PM | Lyndon | maybe
7:47:06 PM | TheFu | Per part making time will be much, longer.
7:47:17 PM | Lyndon | that would be cool
7:47:38 PM | TheFu | For seldom needed parts, it could make sense.
7:48:07 PM | bp9 | As long as the new part is strong enough at 96% density
7:50:44 PM | BobK54 | "additive manufacturing" is the new buzzword
7:50:55 PM | TheFu | Remember that Staples had 3d printing services? Anyone used that? Ever?
7:51:00 PM | Rev_Don | My father had a metal plate installed in his head when he was 17 back in 1940 after a motorcycle accident. He lived for another 50 years
7:51:37 PM | bp9 | Rev_Don: Setting off airport metal detectors every time he traveled :-)
7:51:38 PM | Rev_Don | TheFu, no because the nearest Staples is over 100 miles away.
7:51:43 PM | garywhite | this coinhive looks legitimate...I've already got it set up & "mining", believe it or not it actually works
7:52:06 PM | TheFu | Watch A 10-Year-Old's Face Unlock His Mom's Iphone X
7:52:06 PM | TheFu | https://www.wired.com/story/10-year-old-face-id-unlocks-mothers-iphone-x/
7:52:22 PM | Rev_Don | bp9 He died before airports started using metal detectors
7:52:39 PM | bp9 | Sorry
7:53:11 PM | TheFu | My Mom had an implant. Airport screening was easy. Just tell them, show a letter and they would manually "wand" her.
7:53:37 PM | garywhite | BTW coinhive is how it mines monero in browser, and you just enter email & password, then you tell it to open the miner instead of linking to a website
7:53:40 PM | Lyndon | yeah you wouldnt thin they would have that kind of hardware problem this late
7:54:53 PM | bp9 | Intel + AMD. Mind. Blown.
7:55:03 PM | Lyndon | yes
7:55:42 PM | BobK54 | so it's an SBC? :)
7:55:52 PM | TheFu | I have an AMD -APU ... which doesn't have driver support from AMD.
7:56:32 PM | Lyndon | how do they cool it?
7:56:36 PM | bp9 | So here;s a question: Is a CPU these days just an APU with a cripples graphics chip?
7:56:59 PM | Lyndon | tin foil?
7:57:36 PM | TheFu | APUs are usually soldered onto the board. CPUs aren't.
7:58:07 PM | bp9 | My APU is not soldered; it's a single part, CPU + graphics chip.
7:58:28 PM | ABQTKY | TheFu, lots of 'em are soldered or glued to the board now. Higher end stuff usually isn't...yet.
7:58:37 PM | bp9 | It attaches to the socket on the motherboard just like Sasha's computer did.
7:59:16 PM | Rev_Don | TheFu The cpus and memory are soldered on a lot of laptop boards these days, especially ultra thins and MacBooks
7:59:28 PM | bp9 | Robbie, if you want the computer to keep up with your typing, use a Tandy Model 100 LOL LOL LOL
8:00:18 PM | TheFu | Rev_Don: I'm typing on a chromebook - i3 ... almost zero upgradable parts.
8:01:44 PM | Guest_2811 | Kodi doesn't work.....
8:01:52 PM | TheFu | .... and that server is using 400W of power and sounds like a jet engine?
8:02:16 PM | TheFu | Guest_2811: I'm using Kodi to watch the show right now. No issues this evening here.
8:02:17 PM | Skywriter64 | Ok, what is easier ubuntu server or open media vault ?
8:03:21 PM | bp9 | I'd want to resolve the overheating issue before adding hardware.
8:03:58 PM | TheFu | Only have 1 125W CPU in the house anymore. All the others are 35W or less.
8:05:12 PM | Solbu | My 5 computers are heating my appartment in the winter, I don't need to use any other heat source.
8:05:28 PM | SashaR | hahaha solbu
8:05:30 PM | TheFu | https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005B0Z2I4/ - SAS JBOD controller - good for FreeNAS stuff.
8:05:41 PM | bp9 | 2 power supplies = redundency
8:05:59 PM | TheFu | bp9: 2 computers ... ===== redundancy
8:06:08 PM | bp9 | Ah, Robbie beat me to it, :-)
8:06:16 PM | bp9 | TheFu: Yup!
8:06:29 PM | TheFu | (2) $300 PCs vs (1) $2500 server?
8:07:46 PM | orangeman | do want the control board for sas drive rodbbie
8:08:07 PM | Lyndon | bye
8:08:30 PM | Gpop7 | Great show. Enjoyed. Have a great week.
8:08:39 PM | bp9 | orangeman: I'll say yes on Robbie's behalf! :-)
8:08:47 PM | Gpop7 | Goodnight all.
8:08:56 PM | Lyndon | lol
8:09:04 PM | bp9 | He was saying he can't use the drives without the controller :-)
8:09:33 PM | TheFu | bp9: The controller link above will work with SAS drives ... or 16 SATA disks. ;)
8:09:43 PM | Lyndon | there we go
8:10:42 PM | Lyndon | great delivery
8:11:17 PM | bp9 | TheFu: Thank you!
8:11:35 PM | Lyndon | color is deeper
8:11:38 PM | Solbu | RobbieF: Your phone case looks nice.
8:12:40 PM | SashaR | Well darling friends... see you next week for more fun and games!!!!
8:12:49 PM | orangeman | do you want the control robbie
8:13:00 PM | Lyndon | looking forward to it ;)
8:13:05 PM | ABQTKY | TTFN, SashaR
8:13:20 PM | bp9 | Oh they cut the feed just as it was getting to the fun stuff, the after-show banter
8:13:49 PM | bp9 | The shoes goes much quicker when you watch it live
8:13:59 PM | orangeman | give a email orange man i i will arange to get the control ship over to you
8:21:47 PM | TheFu | $ ping cat5.tv
8:21:47 PM | TheFu | PING cat5.tv (104.28.7.102) 56(84) bytes of data.
