When creating The Orville, Seth MacFarlane and his team wanted to use a physical model of the ship to provide a realism that can't currently be matched by straight CG. We asked Brooke Noska (VFX Producer / Co VFX Supervisor) and Tom Costantino (Co Producer) how it's done.
Watch NowWe asked Tom Costantino and Brooke Noska if we could see The Orville model used to shoot the show. It's absolutely astonishing. With the help of this model, they use sophisticated robotic motion capture cameras to allow them to capture realistic camera movement and give a real feel of the ship's physical space. Then, using CG, they detail the ship and place it in the virtual space to become the ship we all see on the show.
Watch NowIt's a different world for television producers than 20-30 years ago in more ways than one. Tom Costantino and Brooke Noska share what it's like as creators of The Orville to be able to interact directly with the show's fans over social media.
Watch NowBack in the old days of sci-fi TV production, a ton of trickery had to be used to create the effects and even perform the editing. With everything being digital these days, we wanted to know how the TV production workflow has been impacted. Tom Costantino and Brooke Noska join us from The Orville to talk about how the use of digital tech has revolutionized the process, and how they've even adapted some old tricks to pull off big effects.
Watch NowWe spoke with Tom Costantino and Brooke Noska from The Orville to see what kinds of interesting consumer tech has influenced their production workflow. It's no surprise that Apple tops the list, but it's impressive just how much Apple products such as the iPhone and iPad Mini have permeated the video production chain, and even the set of The Orville.
Watch NowThe Orville merchandise is coming soon! Did someone say "die-cast ship models"? How about "Krill action figures"? Oh yeah! As Co-Producer Tom Costantino says, soon, we'll be playing with little Orvilles. Please note: Unfortunately flamethrowers will not be part of the lineup.
Watch NowBefore The Orville was released, we were originally confused: Was it going to be a Star Trek spoof? An outer space comedy? While it has some amazing comedic moments, there came a point in viewing The Orville where we all sat back and realized, my goodness - this is a SERIOUS sci-fi! We asked Tom Costantino and Brooke Noska if there was a moment like that for the people creating the show. What we found instead is that their plan worked perfectly and Seth MacFarlane has been excepted as a sci-fi genius.
Watch NowWe asked Tom Costantino (Co-Producer) and Brooke Noska (VFX Producer / Co-VFX Supervisor) what the move to Hulu really means for fans. Their response has us excited about what's to come from the Hulu-release of The Orville Season 3.
Watch NowWe asked Tom Costantino and Brooke Noska when The Orville Season 3 will be released. Spoiler alert: They don't know! But let's talk about why that is.
Watch NowWhen we asked Tom Costantino and Brooke Noska if The Orville had found its legs in Seasons 1 and 2, we learned that the show may even be evolving into a very sexy toad.
