Coffee Break - December 13, 2020

  • December 13, 2020

In the last Coffee Break for 2020, bp9 is trying to understand the circuit of his garage door opener, and still hard at work on his encrypted client/server project. No shared key here, but rather a proper public/private key like SSH. Did Solbu fall asleep again? Reminds everyone that Robbie has been crazy buzy, not taking a break. Doug is waiting on fan and heatsinks for his RasPi. Peter reminds bp9 to use opto-isolators and talks more about circuits, Synology and lightning. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and stay safe everyone! bp9 is joined by Doug and Peter.

Topics Discussed:

bp9
- Reminds everyone that this is the last coffee break for 2020 because Cat5.tv studios are shut down for the two weekends surrounding Christmas.
- Next Coffee Break is 03-JAN-2021.
- Is trying to deduce the circuit from the circuit board of his garage door opener.
- The solution to finding something you lost is to buy a replacement -- or let your cat find it for you!
- Is still researching the encrypted client/server project.
- The program that bp9 is using as a model seems to be using a shared key with username/password and is not happy with that.
- Wants to use a proper public/private key, similar to how SSH works.
- It's OK that the channel is encrypted, but wants to add proper identification of the user who is running the client.
- Thunderbird client uses PGP but hasn't found anyone to exchange encrypted emails with :-)
- Doesn't like web-based email where it is left on someone else's computer!!
- If the provider throws a switch, you lose access to ALL of it: email, photos, documents, everything!
- Reminds everyone that Robbie has been crazy busy building shows, not taking a break LOL
- Wondered if Solbu has fallen asleep again? LOL
- Throws Robbie under the bus re. keeping Coffee Break length to 25 minutes
- Has not moved forward with PineTime, but someone else has already built a good distro with it, so will likely load up his pinetime with that distro. The physical connection is the hardest thing to get exactly correct.

Doug
- Wants to know if bp9 will use PGP to generate public and private keys?
- No, bp9 will use the tools that come with GnuTLS to generate public/private keys but the functionality is the same as PGP.
- Still waiting on heatsinks and fans on his RasPi so it will stay cool when running Plex or any media player
- Still doesn't plan to pursue programming.
- Reminds us that in USA it is illegal to rip a DVD or BluRay because of DRM, and does not plan to move to Canada. :-)

Peter
- Explains that if bp9 uses an Arduino to replace the circuit board on his garage door opener he must use opto-isolators to make sure we don't see any mains voltage bleeding through to the low-voltage side.
- We think the small IC on the board is an opto-isolator.
- Shows off some natural magnets that he doesn't have a use for but bought them because they were interesting LOL
- He may have showed those magnets off on a previous Coffee Break.
- Reminds us about Thunderbirds TV show from the 1960's.
- We giggle about the solution that most people who get in trouble on that show do: When something goes wrong, send another ship!
- Peter's Synology box can act as a web-based email server if he wants to.
- It is true that you are locked into Synology's infrastructure, if you are happy with that.
- You can choose to use just one part and nothing else.
- Peter's wife makes an invisible appearance and we all wish her a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
- It gets windy between October and February.
- Reminisces about when his eyesight was 20/20 LOL
- Is building a co-ax switch for his antenna with a RasPi but bp9 suggests an arduino because it will be less likely to be affected if the power goes out.
