Linux can breathe new life into ageing computer hardware, and this week we give it a try on an old Compaq 6510b laptop which came with Windows Vista Basic.

This week, we're still hanging my BlackBerry Z10 off the side of the co-host laptop. I had every intention of using the unlock code purchased for us by one of our viewers (thank you!!!) to unlock our LTE modem as this week's main feature, so at 6:30am I headed in to the studio to get the IMEI code off the modem, and I placed the order for the unlock code. However, I realize these things take time as the company I'm ordering the unlock code from has to deal with Bell Mobility to get the code (because that's who the modem is currently locked to). 12 hours later, the code had still not arrived in my inbox, so I quickly made the decision to change directions for the show.

Last week, an old Compaq 6510b laptop was donated to the network (thank you!!!) and the timing couldn't be more perfect! Martin Wimpress just shared with us how great Ubuntu Mate 16.04 works on old hardware... so, let's put it to the test!

Since the demonstration is really more for new Linux users or people curious about making the switch from Windows, Kelsey and I thought it'd be best if she performed the installation. She's never done it before, so it's a good opportunity to see the installation process from a novice's perspective. We did find the partition warning screen to be a little confuzzling to n00bs, but otherwise the process was self-explanatory and went perfectly.

Congratulations to our winners this week! We gave away a ton of netTALK Duo II devices, so watch back to the video in case your name was called! Winners have 30 days to claim their prize before they are awarded to another viewer.

My main financial goal right now is to cover our cost of bringing Category5 Technology TV to the world each week, and at present we're much further from that goal than I'd like. Your contributions are making a huge difference, but we're not there yet. Please encourage others to support us on Patreon, through the Tip Jar, by using our partner links for your online shopping, or a combination of all three.

Thanks for watching, and thank you for supporting Category5 TV!
