It's time to upgrade the storage in our old server. Robbie sets out to see if he can genuinely tell the difference between his old spinning SAS drives and Kingston's DC500R SATA SSDs. Mark Noland from Kingston joins us to discuss the FIO benchmark results, how businesses of all sizes can benefit from the switch to SSD, and what's next to further improve storage performance in the server room. We'll also learn how datacentre drives differ from the standard SSD, and why Kingston's DC500 will outperform them long term.
Watch NowRaspberry Pi have released the Pi 400: a Pi keyboard that features a Raspberry Pi 4 built-in, with 4 GB RAM. We'll tear into the box, take a look at the out of box experience, and then boot up Ubuntu 20.10 Desktop, downloaded from Canonical's official site. Beyond the obvious functionality (such as Office suite), it plays YouTube well, supports Plex playback (even h265) after installing VLC, and can support DRM sites such as Netflix with support from the community. Is it a gimmic? Or is this the ideal kit for a maker who loves that old Commodore style "keyboard computer"?
Watch NowHave a song stuck in your head and can't figure out what it is? Hear a hot song on the radio but the DJ doesn't say the title? How about a backing track in a video that you like? Google Assistant now features a fantastic new tool allowing you to search for any song by audio. Even something as inaccurate as humming the tune can turn up accurate results. And what's best? It has already been added to your Android phone: There's no app to install, and it's absolutely free.
Watch NowUsing an assortment of free software, Henry and Robbie turn a real house into a significantly smaller 3D printed object. Henry uses aerial photogrammetry to turn his quadcopter into a pseudo real-world building scanner. He can import that scan into game engines, or even Blender. Robbie will demonstrate how he can also take the resulting file and turn it into a 3D printed version of the real-world object.
Watch NowNow you can turn your face into a zombie without having to die and become undead. Typically we've seen generative adversarial networks (neural networks that generate faces, objects, and so-on that don't actually exist) be used to create fake people. But as part of our Halloween special this year, Robbie shows a fun online tool that lets him change Jeff into a zombie in seconds.
Watch NowThe Orville Interactive Fan Experience has received an update from deep space just in time for Halloween. ECV-197 is trapped by a sinister being in a mysterious and frightening nebula. Nearing hull failure, with several consoles destroyed by the evil force, it's up to you to save the ship.
Watch NowRobbie has been learning the basics of 3D printing, and purchased an Ender-3 V2. Come along on his journey into 3D printing. As we kick off the series, Robbie assembles his first 3D printer (don't worry, we've sped it up). We'll also discuss some of the exciting things he has learned in his first few weeks with the device, and how he has even customized and printed his own parts to enhance the printer's usability. Plus, a look at his first prints: From Maneki-neko (Lucky cat) to a Dalek figurine (Doctor Who), even these early prints look great!
Watch NowWhile Robbie's approach to maker tech is to start cheap and expand his kit as his skills grow, Jeff wants to hit the ground running, diving right into PCB creation. Robbie has designed and created simple circuits which he's soldered onto blank PCBs, but Jeff has got his sights on the laser printer method as a starting point.
Watch NowWhether you want to enjoy a service that's only available in another country, wish to anonymize your web traffic to provide an extra layer of privacy, or your IP address has been blocked by a service and you need a quick and easy way to change your IP without actually changing your IP, a proxy server is a great solution. But free ones can be unreliable and dangerous. So Robbie shows us how to create our own Debian-based proxy server in the cloud using Amazon's EC2 Free Tier instances.
Watch NowTo freshen things up for the start of Season 14, Robbie jumped on Fiverr and hired four musicians to remix the Category5 Technology TV theme song as an 8-bit chiptune.
