Coffee Break - May 15, 2020

Green licorice is not free, nor is it a green liquid. Yes, we're learning to understand Peter, and glad his medical appointment went well! We've decided it'd be fun to connect to Zoom meetings using at least a dozen smartphones. Robbie's got a long weekend, and the Queen is pranking Saudi leaders. We're creating our own CardDAV standards (hey, if Evolution can do it, why can't we?) and we'll talk about our varying convictions about where email should go. Joining Robbie today are Solbu, Peter Lewis, bp9, Ron Morrissette, and long-time viewer, first-time Coffee Breaker, Moe Maravilla.

Coffee Break - May 14, 2020

Robbie needs coffee, badly. Solbu's DNS server came under attack and Robbie is reminded how he hid a hardware firewall inside his server years ago. Some thoughts on public transit and Santa Claus, drug addicted computer salespeople, and the boss key Robbie made in public school. Peter has programmed a screensaver, which gets us all reminiscing about Johnny Castaway. cat5tv_captions isn't totally accurate, but it's cool that it translates to many languages. Joining Robbie Ferguson today are Peter Lewis, bp9, Solbu and Ron Morrissette.

Coffee Break - May 13, 2020

Delicious margarine cauliflower, Peter's got a LiPo for his music player that took nearly a half a year to arrive, and that leads bp9 and Robbie to wonder when their PineTime Developer Kits will arrive. Robbie mentions some impressive upgrades on the Category5 web site, and reminds bp9 about the AI that converts all our speech into text files. We'll also chat about Robbie's server collocation, how he protects his servers from attackers, Evolution on a PinePhone, Synology vs. QNAP with a custom OS, and bp9 is quite the handyman, having fixed his own washer! Joining Robbie Ferguson today are bp9 and Peter Lewis, with a Solbu lurking.

Coffee Break - May 12, 2020

Robbie's plans to prevent having to cut off the Coffee Break mid-discussion, how diodes can help us build our redundant power supply for SBCs, aerial photographs from 1862, Solbu's plans for his server-based storage, Peter's giant 1.21 gigawatt connectors, an idea to replace a noisy server with a quiet SBC-powered DAS, and why can't they make quiet fans for Dell servers? Joining Robbie Ferguson today are Solbu, Ron Morrissette, bp9 and Peter Lewis.

Coffee Break - May 11, 2020

Today on the Community Coffee Break we'll chat about why we didn't have one on Sunday, the death of a PSU, and both Peter and bp9 help Robbie understand how to create a dual-redundant power supply using diodes. Solbu had a DSL modem that had a similar issue, and bp9 has us reminiscing about old tech such as the Gopher protocol and BBS's... and that reminds Solbu of a video he once saw. Joining Robbie Ferguson today are Solbu, Ron Morrissette, Peter Lewis, bp9 and Lanceman 63.

Coffee Break - May 9, 2020

Amidst a snowy day, Robbie's son, Liam (9) is coding a game in LUA to play online with his cousins. Solbu has a new weed wacker that also doubles as a weapon against the coming zombie apocalypse, Peter loves Robbie's suggestion of Radio Garden, and Robbie wants to grab some firewood to stave off the cold May air and pandemic doldrums. We'll also talk about those who try to catch the Google Street View car or fool speed cameras with super fast motorbikes. Joining Robbie Ferguson today are his son Liam, plus Peter Lewis, bp9 and Solbu.

Coffee Break - May 8, 2020

When the whole world is taking a coffee break at the same time, Zoom starts misbehaving. Once we figure out how to deal with the massive delay, we chat about Ron's new server rack and all the cable organization he'll be doing. That brings us to thoughts of tech hoarding: Is it really hoarding if you'll use it one day? Robbie thinks so as he regrets having e-wasted a 4U server chassis a few years back that would have come in very handy at the new studio. Speaking of holding on to old things, Peter has a soldering iron from the 1700's that still works. Solbu makes us wonder if lightbulbs were the original planned obsolescence product, and Robbie figures he knows why LED lightbulbs don't actually last 30 years. Joining Robbie Ferguson today are Solbu, Peter Lewis, Ron Morrissette and bp9.

Coffee Break - May 7, 2020

Let's chat over coffee about how the studio is coming along, and how much of a difference it makes to reduce fan noise... and correct Robbie: It's waveform, not wavetable. We'll also spend time admiring the realism of MarshMan's lifelike bird animation, the wonderful and not so wonderful features of Synology, how NextCloud is blowing Robbie's mind, and we're all going to pitch in and get Peter a talk box and call him Peter Frampton. Joining Robbie Ferguson today are bp9, Ron Morrissette, Solbu, Bo Lechnowsky, Peter Lewis [Frampton] and MarshMan.
